The 1975 Universiade only featured athletics, other disciplines having been cancelled, as the original host Yugoslavia was unable to hold the event. [2] The game was therefore referred to as the World University Championships in athletics. [3]

Andrea Mátay is a retired Hungarian high jumper. Her outdoor personal best jump was 1.94 metres, achieved in September 1979 in Mexico City. She had 1.98 m on the indoor track, from February 1979 in Budapest. It was a world indoor record. She won two medals at the European Indoor Championships. She became Hungarian champion in 1973, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1985.

At the 2001 Summer Universiade, the athletics events were held in Beijing, People's Republic of China between 27 August and 1 September. A total of 45 events were contested, of which 23 by male and 22 by female athletes. The host country, China, took the most gold medals (9) and the most medals overall (16). The United States were a close second with a total of 8 golds. Five Universiade records were broken during the course of the athletics competition.
