John David Preston (born December 29,1950) [1] is an American politician and author from Kentucky who was a member of the Kentucky Senate from 1994 to 1997.
Preston was elected to the senate in a March 1994 special election following the resignation of incumbent Democratic senator David LeMaster. [2] In 1996 redistricting moved his native Johnson County to the 29th senate district,where he lost to incumbent Democratic senator Benny Ray Bailey. [3] At other points in his career Preston has been a Commonwealth's Attorney,member of the Paintsville City Council,mayor of Paintsville,and a judge of the 24th Circuit Court. [4]

Near the end of the American Civil War,incumbent President Abraham Lincoln of the National Union Party easily defeated the Democratic nominee,former General George B. McClellan,by a wide margin of 212–21 in the electoral college,with 55% of the popular vote. For the election,the Republican Party and some Democrats created the National Union Party,especially to attract War Democrats.

Serving from 1857 to 1861,he took office at the age of 36. He was a member of the Democratic Party,and ran for president in 1860 as a Southern Democrat. He served in the U.S. Senate during the outbreak of the American Civil War,but was expelled after joining the Confederate Army. He was appointed Confederate Secretary of War in 1865.

He also served as U.S. Ambassador to India from 1955 to 1956 and U.S. Ambassador to East Germany from 1974 to 1976. He was the first Republican to be popularly elected to more than one term as a senator from Kentucky and,in both 1960 and 1966,he set records for the largest victory margin for a Kentucky senatorial candidate from either party.

John White Stevenson was the 25th governor of Kentucky and represented the state in both houses of the U.S. Congress. The son of former Speaker of the House and U.S. diplomat Andrew Stevenson,John Stevenson graduated from the University of Virginia in 1832 and studied law under his cousin,future Congressman Willoughby Newton. After briefly practicing law in Mississippi,he relocated to Covington,Kentucky,and was elected county attorney. After serving in the Kentucky legislature,he was chosen as a delegate to the state's third constitutional convention in 1849 and was one of three commissioners charged with revising its code of laws,a task finished in 1854. A Democrat,he was elected to two consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives where he supported several proposed compromises to avert the Civil War and blamed the Radical Republicans for their failure.
Jenny Wiley, born Jean "Jenny" Sellards (1760–1831),in British Colonial America,was a pioneer woman who was taken captive by Native Americans in 1789,where she witnessed the death of her brother and children. She escaped after 11 months of captivity. Jenny Wiley State Resort Park in Prestonsburg,Kentucky is named in her honor.
David Lewis Williams is an American attorney,Republican politician,and a judge from the U.S. state of Kentucky. From the year 1987 to 2012,Williams represented Senate District 16,a position he secured upon the retirement of fellow Republican Doug Moseley. When Republicans gained control of the state senate in 2000,Williams was chosen as President of the Senate,and held that post continuously until his resignation in November 2012. In September 2010,he announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for governor in the 2011 gubernatorial election. On May 17,2011,Williams secured the Republican nomination over Tea Party movement-backed Phil Moffet. However,he lost the general election by twenty points to incumbent Democratic Governor Steve Beshear. In November 2012,Williams resigned his Senate seat to accept a circuit court judgeship.
