John Kakungulu Walugembe (Born November 11, 1981) is a Ugandan business executive, [7] economist, author, [8] entrepreneur and scientist. He is the founder of Oxford International Development Advisors Ltd (OXIDAL) and co-founder of the Oxford Green Partnership, Better Livelihoods Inc. and the Water and Sanitation Entrepreneurs Association Uganda (WASEU). [9] He is the volunteer Executive Director of Federation of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises - Uganda (FSME), the former executive director of the Uganda Small Scale Industries Association (USSIA) [10] and head of business development at the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UNCCI). Early life and education

Walugembe was born in Ntinda, a wealthy suburb of Uganda in 1981 to Emmanuel Ludovic Ndawula and Rebecca Ndawula. A Muganda by tribe, he belongs to the Buganda Royal Family (Balangira clan).

He attended Busoga College Mwiri and King's College Budo for his secondary school education and then proceeded to Makerere University, where he attained a Bachelor of Science first-class honours degree in 2004. In 2016, he attended the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, where he obtained a Master in Business Administration (MBA) majoring in Finance and Economics at Saïd Business School. At Oxford, he was a member of Wadham College and a recipient of the Skoll Scholarship for Social Entrepreneurship. He was also awarded an MPA (Development Economics and International Development) from Harvard University at Harvard Kennedy School.

Walugembe is a certified microfinance trainer with the World Bank Institute, a certified trainer with the International Labour Organization in Women Entrepreneurship Development (WED), a certified financial literacy trainer with GIZ/Bank of Uganda and has attended trainings by KOICA, JICA and UNDP. Career

Walugembe worked as the head of the consulting unit for the business development services department at the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UNCCI) from 2005 to 2012. In that spell, he promoted the establishment of the Turkey-Uganda Business Council, South Africa-Uganda Business Council and Iran-Uganda Business council. He was also the coordinator of the IGAD Business Forum (IBF) from 2009 to 2012. [6] In 2012, he was appointed as the Executive Director of the Uganda Small Scale Industries Association (USSIA). He held this position till 2016. In 2017, he became the volunteer Executive Director of Federation of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises - Uganda (FSME). [14]

Walugembe is a former chairperson of the policy, planning and research committee of Skilling Uganda [15] where he also served as a member of the Executive Committee of the reform task force. He was the chairperson of the panel of judges for the Late Prof. James Mulwana Awards for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, [16] a judge for the ICCO Agri-Business Innovation Challenge, and also one of the Judges for the Pakasa Youth Awards 2016. [6]

He was a mentor for the African Entrepreneurship Award and a business mentor with TechnoServe, a ministerial nominee to the Industrial Training Council (ITC) of the Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) Uganda [17] and further served as the business development head of Water For People Uganda and the Rwenzori Urban Sanitation and Waste Programme (RUSWP) of the Netherlands government in Uganda. He was once a senior green growth specialist with the Global Green Growth Institute.

Walugembe also served on the boards of directors and/or executive or steering committees of: the Federation of Young Entrepreneurs Uganda (FYEU]); [18] the Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU); the CIPE-UMA Youth Entrepreneurship Initiative; the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Uganda; [19] the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives (MTIC) and the Uganda WASH Alliance.

He is the founder of Cardiff International College of Business and Vocational Studies as well as Balcon Credit Limited, a rural microfinance company that gives loans to civil servants and rural women. Also, he is a member of the Rotary Club of Kampala and the former General Secretary of the KOICA Club of Uganda (KOCU). [20]

Microcredit for water supply and sanitation is the application of microcredit to provide loans to small enterprises and households in order to increase access to an improved water source and sanitation in developing countries. While most investments in water supply and sanitation infrastructure are financed by the public sector, investment levels have been insufficient to achieve universal access. Commercial credit to public utilities was limited by low tariffs and insufficient cost-recovery. Microcredits are a complementary or alternative approach to allow the poor to gain access to water supply and sanitation.

Stichting SYPO is a Dutch NGO established in 2003, with the objective to 'offer structural aid in Uganda by initiating and supporting projects with a sustainable, entrepreneurial character'. SYPO focuses on microfinance and SME financing in rural areas. The NGO has confined its operations to the former Mukono District. SYPO works with around fifteen volunteers in the Netherlands, and works with paid employees and partner projects Uganda. The core focus of SYPO is microfinance, through its Ugandan subsidiary SYPO Uganda Ltd. The main achievement of SYPO has been to develop a business model to reach women in very remote areas with low-cost business loans, relying on "lean" principles, mobile money and online technology systems. SYPO's Director is Duko Hopman, supervised by a board which is chaired by Ger van der Bruggen.

Jennifer Semakula Musisi is a Ugandan lawyer and public administrator. She is the first City Leader in Residence at Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative at the Ash Center of the Harvard Kennedy School, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. She was appointed to this position in January 2019.

Anatoli Kamugisha is a businessman, entrepreneur, and investor in Uganda, the third-largest economy in the East African Community. He is the managing director and chief executive officer of Akright Projects Limited, a Ugandan real estate development company. He also serves as the president of the Uganda Private Property Developers Association (UPDA). He has been reported to be one of the wealthiest individuals in the country, with an estimated net worth of approximately US$77million as of January 2017.

Akright Projects Limited (APL) is a privately owned real estate development company in Uganda. It is a leading property development company in the country. APL is the largest indigenous property development company in Uganda.

James Mulwana, was a Ugandan businessman, entrepreneur, and industrialist. He was the Group chairman and chief executive officer of the Mulwana Group of Companies, a diverse business conglomerate with interests in dairy farming, plastics, manufacturing, and real estate. From 1992 until his death in 2013, Mulwana served as a non-executive director on the board of directors of Standard Chartered Uganda, the second-largest commercial bank in the country, by assets. From 1998 until 2013, he served as the chairman of that board. At the time of his death, he was listed as one of the wealthiest individuals in Uganda.

Herman Kizito Kasekende is a Ugandan businessman, economist, and bank executive. He is the managing director and chief executive officer of Stanchart Zambia, effective February 2017. Prior to that, from 22 July 2012 until 20 February 2017, he was the managing director and chief executive officer of Stanchart Uganda, the second-largest commercial bank in the country by assets, which totaled nearly US$965 million in December 2012.

Dr. Sailendra Narain is a development finance specialist born in Nawadah, Bihar Province, India. For over 40 years, Narain has been a pioneer in developing the global SME sector. His specialities include: designing policy frameworks for SME Growth, establishing SME financing programs in banking and development financial institutions, and capacity building for SMEs with a focus on Entrepreneurship.

Barbara Mulwana is a Ugandan electrical engineer and computer scientist, who serves as the chairperson of the Uganda Manufacturers' Association. In May 2017, she replaced Amos Nzeyi, who retired after two consecutive terms. She also serves as the executive director of "Nice House of Plastics", a member company of the Mulwana Group of Companies.
