PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia [1] (trading as KAI Commuter, [2] abbreviated as KCI or KAIC) is a subsidiary of the Indonesian national railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) which manages commuter rail services. Initially founded as an operator of Greater Jakarta commuter rail, the company is currently responsible for several commuter rail and local train systems in Indonesia.
KAI Commuter originated from the Jabotabek Urban Transport Division (Indonesian : Divisi Angkutan Perkotaan Jabotabek) of KAI (previously PT Kereta Api), which was separated from Operational Area I Jakarta (Daerah Operasi I Jakarta) of KAI. The division handles the Jabotabek commuter rail (currently KRL Commuterline), while the Daerah Operasi I handles long-distance trains and railway infrastructures.
KAI Commuter was founded on 15 September 2008 as PT KAI Commuter Jabodetabek (KCJ, branded later as "Commuterline" or simply "Commuter"), as a spin-off from KAI. The company formation was based on Presidential Instruction (Instruksi Presiden) No. 5 of 2008 (signed by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono) and Letter of State Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (Surat Menneg BUMN) No. S-653/MBU/2008 dated 12 August 2008; and got its operating permits from Ministry of Transportation. The main tasks of the newly formed subsidiary is to provide commuter rail transportation services using electric trains in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) and surrounding areas as well as non-passenger transportation business. [3] Ticket revenues, rolling stock maintenance, and station management was transferred to KCJ, but all operational matters (e.g. scheduling and dispatching), rolling stock, stations and infrastructures remained under KAI's responsibility.
On 19 September 2017, PT KAI Commuter Jabodetabek changed its name into PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (lit. 'Indonesia Commuter Railways'), three days after the operator's 9th anniversary. [4] The name change reflects the wider mandate as a commuter rail operator across the country. [5] KCI then rebranded as KAI Commuter on 28 September 2020 along with the logo change of KAI.
From 2020 onwards, KAI Commuter began expanding its operations nationwide. Starting October 2020, the operations of both the Prambanan Express commuter rail and Lokal Merak train previously managed by KAI were transferred to KAI Commuter after obtain operation permit from Ministry of Transportation on 3 June 2020. [6] [7] Prambanan Express is a commuter rail serving Yogyakarta and (formerly) Surakarta greater areas, which includes cities and regencies in Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java, while Lokal Merak is an economy-class local train operating from Rangkasbitung Station (a terminus of KRL Commuterline Green Line) to Merak Station (the westernmost station in Java which has connection to the Port of Merak) and vice versa. Prambanan Express is currently no longer serving Surakarta greater area as the electric KAI Commuter Yogyakarta Line became operational in February 2021 on the segment between Surakarta and Yogyakarta. [8] Starting 1 April 2022, KAI Commuter took over the Greater Bandung commuter trains, which consisted of two lines.

KMT' (Kartu Multi-Trip, "multitrip card"), or formerly COMMET (Commuter Electronic Ticketing), is the brand of contactless smart card issued by KAI Commuter. First launched on 1 July 2013, [11] it is used primarily for multiple journey purpose in KRL Commuterline-branded services (i.e. in Greater Jakarta and Yogyakarta-Solo). The card has no expiry date. In Greater Jakarta KRL Commuterline, it can be used with a minimum credit of Rp 5,000 after KAI Commuter introduced fare adjustment machines. Passengers who don't have enough credit in their card can top-up at fare adjustment machines or two-way ticket counters.
In October 2021, KAI Commuter began a trial to expand the use of Multi Trip Card on other major public transportation systems in Greater Jakarta such as Transjakarta, MRT Jakarta and LRT Jakarta. [10] Following the trial, KAI Commuter began to partner bus operators and local governments in Yogyakarta, Central Java and East Java, expanding the use of KMT for Trans Jateng, Trans Jogja and Trans Jatim bus systems. [12] However, most notably, it is not accepted as a payment method for BRT programs supported by central government-backed Teman Bus and Biskita.
There were also single-journey cards called THB (Tiket Harian Berjaminan, "guaranteed daily ticket") running on the same system, but with an expiry date of seven days since last purchase. The THB was discontinued in August 2019.

It is state-owned and pays track access charges. Its headquarters are located in Bandung, West Java. In 2019, KAI carried 429 million passengers and 47.2 million tonnes of cargo.
KRL Commuterline, commonly known as Greater Jakarta Commuter rail, Jakarta Commuter rail, and KRL Commuter Line Jabodetabek is a commuter rail system for Greater Jakarta in Indonesia. It was previously known as KRL Jabodetabek. It is operated by KAI Commuter (KCI), a subsidiary of the Indonesian national railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI). The rail system uses rolling stock of rapid transit standard and operates high frequency services with minimum headway. In 2019, the average number of Commuterline users per day reached 1.04 million, with the record of the highest number of users served in a day being 1,154,080.
Bogor Station (BOO), formerly Buitenzorg Station, is a railway station located in the city of Bogor, West Java. This station serves as the terminus for the Red Line service of KRL Commuterline. The station has five island platforms and two side platforms. The station is located +246 meters above sea level.
Manggarai Station (MRI) is a railway station at Manggarai, Tebet, South Jakarta, Jakarta, Indonesia. At present, it serves primarily as a transit station for KRL Commuterline's Bogor Line, Cikarang Loop Line, and Soekarno–Hatta Airport Rail Link; The Bukit Duri depot is located at the south side of the station, it also serves as a storage for intercity trains before they go to Gambir or Jakarta Kota stations for their departure.

Rangkasbitung Station (RK) is a railway station located in East Muara Ciujung, Rangkasbitung, Lebak Regency, Banten. It is the main station of Lebak Regency. This station has a small rail yard to keep passenger coaches and goods carriages. This yard also keeps locomotives from Jakarta which serve trains from Jakarta Kota. All train services that pass this station stop in this station.
Cikini Station is a railway station located on Jl. Cikini Raya, Cikini, Menteng, Jakarta. This station is only served by KRL Commuterline commuter trains from Jakarta Kota to Depok and Bogor.
The Cikarang Loop Line, officially the Cikarang Commuter Line, is a commuter rail line in Jakarta, Indonesia which is operated by PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI). The line connects Kampung Bandan station in North Jakarta and Cikarang station in Cikarang, Bekasi Regency, West Java. On maps and diagrams, the line is shown using the color "blue". Jakarta Kota–Cikarang is the extension of previously Jakarta Kota–Bekasi line which connects to Cikarang since 8 October 2017.

The line is the busiest in the KA Commuter system.
The Rangkasbitung Line, officially the Rangkasbitung Commuter Line, is a commuter rail line in Indonesia, operated by PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI). The line connects Tanah Abang station in Central Jakarta and Rangkasbitung station in Lebak Regency, Banten. On maps and diagrams, the line is shown using the color "green". Tanah Abang–Rangkasbitung line is the longest and fourth busiest line in the KRL Commuterline system.
KA Commuter line Jatinegara–Bogor or the Jakarta loop line was a commuter rail line in Indonesia, operated by PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI). The line connected Jatinegara station in East Jakarta and Bogor station in Bogor, West Java. On maps and diagrams, the line was shown using the colour "yellow". The Jatinegara–Bogor line was the second busiest line in the KA Commuter system. Covering the distance of 69.35 kilometres, it was the longest KA Commuter line, combining the loop-line on Jatinegara–Kampung Bandan–Tanah Abang–Manggarai with Manggarai–Depok–Bogor lines.
The Tanjung Priok Line, officially the Tanjung Priok Commuter Line, is a commuter rail line in Indonesia, operated by PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia. The line connects Jakarta Kota station in West Jakarta and Tanjung Priuk station in North Jakarta. On maps and diagrams, the line is shown using the colour "pink". Covering a distance of only 8.115 kilometres, the pink line is the shortest line in the Jakarta KA Commuter system, and serves mostly as the connecting feeder line between Jakarta Kota station and Kampung Bandan station. The Pink Line traces its origins back to a railway line built from 1883 to 1885 during the Dutch colonial era, to connect the city of Jakarta to Tanjung Priok Port. It was also one of the earliest railway lines in Indonesia to be electrified starting from 1925.
The Tangerang Line, officially the Tangerang Commuter Line, is a commuter rail line in Indonesia, operated by PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI). The line operate on the Duri–Tangerang segment, which connects Duri station in West Jakarta and Tangerang station in Tangerang City, Banten. On maps and diagrams, the line is shown using the colour "brown".
BNI City station is a station for the Soekarno-Hatta Airport Rail Link and KAI Commuter service. Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) holds the naming rights for the station, which was known as Sudirman Baru station during construction period. The station is located in Central Jakarta, on the north bank of West Flood Canal, about a hundred meters from Sudirman Commuter Rail station. The station is part of Dukuh Atas TOD.
Prambanan Express Commuter Line or simply Prambanan Express, commonly abbreviated as Pramex and Prameks, is a commuter rail service that operates between Yogyakarta, Special Region of Yogyakarta and Kutoarjo, Purworejo Regency, Central Java in Indonesia. The service, which first operated in 1994, covers a distance of about 64 kilometers (40 mi) and operates using diesel multiple unit trains. It was previously serving Yogyakarta–Solo for 26 years before it was electrified in 2021.
The EA203 series is an Electric Multiple Unit produced by Industri Kereta Api, in collaboration with Bombardier which will be used as Soekarno–Hatta Airport Rail Link express services from Manggarai Station in Jakarta to Soekarno–Hatta International Airport at Tangerang, Banten. EA203 series was purchased by PT Railink, a joint venture between PT Kereta Api Indonesia and PT Angkasa Pura II which is the operator of the airport train in Indonesia, totaling 60 units divided into 10 series with 6 car formations. EA203 series was sent from its factory in Madiun to Jakarta in stages starting in August 2017.
Rawa Buntu Station (RU) is a class III railway station located in Rawa Buntu, Serpong, South Tangerang. This station is included in the Operational Area I Jakarta, and is located adjacent to the planned city complex Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD). This station is not far from the Serpong exit on the west Jakarta–Serpong Toll Road. In addition, the station is strategically located because it is close to a residential complex in the Serpong area.
KAI Commuter Yogyakarta Line, officially the Yogyakarta Commuter Line, is a commuter rail system in Indonesia serving Greater Yogyakarta in Special Region of Yogyakarta and Greater Surakarta (Solo) in Central Java. Operated by KAI Commuter, subsidiary of the national railway company Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), it is the first electric-powered commuter rail system in Indonesia outside of Greater Jakarta's KRL Commuterline. The single-line system replaced Yogyakarta-Solo section of diesel-powered commuter rail Prambanan Ekspres (Prameks), also operated by KAI Commuter, on 10 February 2021.
Purwakarta Station (PWK) is a class I railway station located in Nagritengah, Purwakarta, Purwakarta Regency. The station, which is located at an altitude of +84 meters, is included in the Operational Area II Bandung. This station is located very close to the Purwakarta regent's office which can be reached on foot.
The Merak Commuter Line or simply Merak Line, formerly Merak Local Train, is a local commuter rail service operated by KAI Commuter that runs from Merak Station to Rangkasbitung Station in Banten, Indonesia. The service, which was reactivated on 1 April 2017, has a total travel time up to 2 hours and is a primary means of transportation for Merak residents to travel to Rangkasbitung. It is colloquially called the Dark Green Line due to its dark green coloured route on the Commuterline travel map.
