KYCS (95.1 FM) is a hot adult contemporary station broadcasting from Rock Springs, Wyoming.

Contents

The station signed on in 1986, as the first sister station of KUGR, which had been broadcasting for ten years at the time. Like its sister stations, the station is currently owned by Wagonwheel Communications Corporation. [2]

Music on KYCS is primarily satellite fed. The network, known as Today's Best Hits, hosts numerous DJs throughout the day, including a morning show. The network is part of Cumulus Media, formerly ABC Radio Networks.

KYCS celebrated its twenty first year of broadcasting in 2007. The station often broadcasts local events, such as an annual blood drive between Green River High School, and Rock Springs High School [3] KYCS is one of several local stations that broadcast school closures as well. [4]

History

KYCS first came to air in 1986, as the second station in the Radio Network group. It was and continues to be owned by Alan Harris through Wagonwheel Communications. [5] KYCS was part of a study to add a new radio station to Meeker, Colorado, which was requesting an opportunity to move to Craig, Colorado. The station had to consider adjacent frequencies, of which KYCS was one. [6] That station became KAYW on 98.1.

Like its sister stations, KYCS broadcasts from a tower located on Wilkins Peak, which is just outside Rock Springs. The 11,500 watt signal reaches into parts of northern Utah to the south. To the west, the station reaches Evanston before fading out completely. To the east, Rawlins receives fringe coverage. KYCS can be heard as far north as the Wind River mountain range. The tower for KYCS is 7,638 feet (2,328 m) above sea level on Wilkins Peak. [7] [8]

Wilkins Peak is a small mountain located in Sweetwater County, Wyoming, between the cities of Green River and Rock Springs. It is primarily used for radio and television station transmitters, but it also serves radio needs of the FAA, EMS, and local businesses such as Questar Gas. In 2003, a tower on the peak was knocked down by a vehicle delivering propane to customers. The tower was owned by Wyoming Public Radio and was serving the local area with programming from National Public Radio. There are numerous access roads to the peak and it is not gated and open year-round, weather permitting. Along with the radio uses, the mountain is also a popular location for mountain biking and hiking. The mountain contains geology typical of its location in southwestern Wyoming.

KFCW is a radio station broadcasting classic rock. Licensed to Riverton, Wyoming, United States, the station is currently owned by the Edwards Group Holdings, Inc., Employee Stock Ownership Trust, through licensee Edwards Communications LC, and features programming from Westwood One's Classic Rock network and AP Radio.
