Karen Valerie Briggs (married name Karen Inman) MBE (born 11 April 1963) is a British retired judoka. Internationally active throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Briggs was a multiple World (four-time) and European (five-time) champion, represented Great Britain at the 1992 Olympic Games, and won gold for England at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. She is a member of the IJF Hall of Fame, and recognised as one of the most successful British and female judoka of all time. [1]
Briggs came to significant prominence after winning the gold medal at the 1982 World Judo Championships in the under 48kg category. She went on to be world champion on four occasions winning five World Championship gold medals in her weight category at the 1984 World Judo Championships, in Vienna, the 1986 World Judo Championships, in Maastricht and the 1989 World Judo Championships, in Belgrade. From 1982 to 1987 she was European champion five times after taking the gold medal at the European Judo Championships. [1] In 1986, she won the gold medal in the 48kg weight category at the judo demonstration sport event as part of the 1986 Commonwealth Games. [2]
In 1990, she represented England and won a gold medal in the 48 kg extra-lightweight, at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand. [3] [4]
In 1992, she represented Great Britain at the 1992 Summer Olympics, this was the first time women's judo was included as an official Olympic sport (the first was as a demonstration event in 1988). She placed fifth after suffering a dislocated shoulder in the women's 48kg category. [5]
In addition to her multiple international titles, she won the bantamweight division at the British Judo Championships in 1981, 1983, 1984 and 1991. [6]
In August 2015 Briggs was inducted into the IJF hall of fame [7]
She is married to Peter Inman, son of Olympic judo coach Roy Inman, and now teaches judo at schools in East Yorkshire. On 9 July 2013 the University of Hull granted to Karen the award of Doctor of the University, honoris causa. [8]
Kate Louise Howey is a former elite British judoka. She remains the only British woman to have won two Olympic judo medals and shares with fellow Olympic medalist Karina Bryant the record of being the only British judoka to have competed at four Olympic Games.
Adrian Neil Adams, is an English judoka who won numerous Olympic and World Championship medals in judo representing Great Britain. He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 1983 New Year Honours for services to judo.

Sally Conway is a Scottish retired judoka who competed for Team GB in the 2012 and the 2016 Rio Olympics in the women's 70 kg judo event. Conway won a bronze medal in the 2016 Olympics. She competed for Scotland at women's 70 kg judo event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, where she won a bronze medal.

JudoScotland is the sportscotland recognised governing body for the Olympic sport of Judo within Scotland. It is currently situated in Edinburgh International Climbing Arena (EICA) in Ratho.
Nekoda Smythe-Davis is a British judoka. She competed for England in the women's 57 kg event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games where she won a gold medal.
Daria Hennadiyivna Bilodid is a Ukrainian judoka. She is the 2019 World and the 2019 European gold medalist in the 48 kg division. In 2021, she won one of the bronze medals in the women's 48 kg event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. She is also the 2024 European gold medalist in the 57 kg division.
Diane Bell is a British former judoka. She won the 56–61 kg event at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, but at the time women's judo was still a demonstration sport, so unlike the men Bell did not enter the list of Olympic medalists in judo. She also won two World Judo Championships, a Commonwealth Games gold and three European Judo Championships.

She won one of the bronze medals in the women's 57 kg event at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Loretta Doyle is a Scottish judoka who won the under-52kg event at the 1982 World Judo Championships, and the under-56 kg event at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. Doyle also won European Judo Championships titles in 1983 and 1992.
Geronay Michaela Whitebooi is a South African judoka. She is a silver medalist at the 2019 African Games and a four-time medalist, including two golds, at the African Judo Championships.
