Judo is one of the sports at the quadrennial Commonwealth Games competition. It was first competed as a demonstration sport at the 1986 Games before being included in the main program for the first time in 1990. Starting with the 2022 Games, Judo is a core sport that is required to be part of the sporting program of each edition of the Games, [1] having previously been an optional sport.

A demonstration sport, or exhibition sport, is a sport which is played to promote it, rather than as part of standard medal competition. This occurs commonly during the Olympic Games, but may also occur at other sporting events.
Judo was first included in the Summer Olympic Games at the 1964 Games in Tokyo, Japan. After not being included in 1968, judo has been an Olympic sport in each Olympiad since then. Only male judoka participated until the 1988 Summer Olympics, when women participated as a demonstration sport. Women judoka were first awarded medals at the 1992 Summer Olympics.

Judo at the 2002 Commonwealth Games was the third time that Judo at the Commonwealth Games was included as a sport. It had been held as a demonstration sport at the 1986 Commonwealth Games and made its official debut at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. The sport took place in the GMEX.
Judo at the 1990 Commonwealth Games was the second time that Judo at the Commonwealth Games was included as a sport. It had been held as a demonstration sport four years earlier at the 1986 Commonwealth Games. The sport took place in the East Pavilion at the Auckland Expo Center, with the flooring only just completed in time for competition.
Karen Valerie Briggs MBE is a retired British judoka. Internationally active throughout the 1980's and 1990's, Briggs was a multiple World (four-time) and European (five-time) champion, represented Great Britain at the 1992 Olympic Games, and won gold for England at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. She is a member of the IJF Hall of Fame, and recognised as one of the most successful British and female judoka of all time.
Mark Berger is a Canadian judoka. A winner of the gold medal in the Men's Heavyweight Judo event at the 1983 Pan American Games and the bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics, he was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. He was born in Ukraine and became a Canadian citizen in the late 1970s. He won gold medals in the heavyweight division in the 1981 Maccabiah Games and the 1985 Maccabiah Games in Israel.
Diane Bell is a British former judoka. She won the 56–61 kg event at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, but at the time women's judo was then still a demonstration sport, so unlike the men Bell did not enter the list of Olympic medalists in judo. She also won two World Judo Championships, a Commonwealth Games gold and three European Judo Championships.

Tom Greenway was a Canadian judoka. He competed in the men's heavyweight event at the 1976 Summer Olympics. In 1986, he won the bronze medal in the +95kg weight category at the judo demonstration sport event as part of the 1986 Commonwealth Games.
Densign White is a male retired British judoka. White competed at the 1984, 1988 and the 1992 Summer Olympics.
William Albert Vincent is a New Zealand judoka. He competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics and the 1988 Summer Olympics. In 1986, he won the bronze medal in the 78kg weight category at the judo demonstration sport event as part of the 1986 Commonwealth Games.

Judo competitions at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, were held from 1 to 3 August 2022. This was the fifth time the sport has been on the program, since it was introduced as a demonstration sport in 1986, and made official at the next edition in 1990. Its second appearance within England specifically, spread across fourteen weight categories.Unlike other international competitions where each country can only enter one athlete per weight. Each participating country can enter up to 2 participants per weight.The sport will give two bronze medals,one for the winner from repechage and another for the athlete who won the third place event.
Judo at the 1986 Commonwealth Games was the first time that Judo at the Commonwealth Games was included as a sport. It was however just as a demonstration sport and did not contribute towards the medal table. The sport took place at Meadowbank Stadium and saw full capacity attendances. The event like many at the 1986 Games was affected by the boycott of multiple nations.
