Keppel MRT station is a future underground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station on the Circle line, located in Bukit Merah planning area, Singapore. This station is part of Stage 6 of the Circle line (CCL6) which will "close the circle" between the HarbourFront and Marina Bay stations. The station will be located along Keppel Road, near to the Keppel Harbour. Slated for completion by 2026, Keppel station will serve the upcoming Greater Southern Waterfront.
First announced in 2015, construction of the station began in 2017. The station was to be opened in 2025 along with the other CCL6 stations, but was delayed to 2026 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Singapore. [3]
On 29 October 2015, the station was first officially announced as part of the Stage 6 of the Circle line. [4] Contract 882 for the construction of Keppel station and associated tunnels was awarded China State Construction Engineering Corporation Limited (Singapore Branch) and Nishimatsu Construction Co. Ltd. Joint Venture (JV) at a sum of S$ 313.8 million ( US$ 227.24 million) in September 2017. Construction began at the end of 2017, with expected completion in 2026. [5] [6] [7]
On 25 July 2019, tunnelling works for the CCL6 started with the launch of the Tunnel Boring Machine at Keppel station. The TBM will tunnel from Keppel to the existing CCL HarbourFront station. [8]
Situated along Keppel Road, the station will serve the Downtown Core and Keppel Distripark. [9] [10]
The station will have a unique landscape theme; an undulating green roof (with tree-like columns) in a natural setting. It was planned to have an underground bicycle park, providing cyclists direct access to the concourse. [10] The size of the two-level station will be 250 metres (820 ft) by 43 metres (141 ft) by 22 metres (72 ft). [11]
The station will also have an underground bicycle parking space. [12]
The station will have three exits on each side of Keppel Road, which will serve Keppel Distripark and future developments in the area. [12]
The Circle Line (CCL) is a medium-capacity Mass Rapid Transit line in Singapore operated by SMRT Corporation. It runs in a currently incomplete loop from Dhoby Ghaut station in the city area of Singapore to HarbourFront station in the south via Bishan station in Central Singapore. It also has a branch to Marina Bay station from Promenade station, which will be extended to Harbourfront station from 2026 to form a complete loop. Coloured orange on the rail map, the fully-underground line is 35.5 kilometres (22.1 mi) long with 30 stations. Travelling from one end of the line to the other takes about an hour.
