Prince Edward Road MRT station is a future underground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station on the Circle line in Downtown Core, Singapore. This station is part of Stage 6 of the Circle line which will "close the circle" between the HarbourFront and Marina Bay stations. It is built along Shenton Way, near the junctions of Keppel Road and Palmer Road.
First announced in 2015, the station originally had the working name Prince Edward. Construction of the station began in 2017. In 2018, the station was named Prince Edward Road during a naming vote by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). The station was to be opened in 2025 along with the other CCL6 stations, but was delayed to 2026 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Singapore. [3]
The station was first announced on 29 October 2015 as part of the Stage 6 of the Circle line. [4] Contract 885 for the construction of Prince Edward station and associated tunnels was awarded to China Railway Tunnel Group Co., Ltd (Singapore Branch) at a sum of S$ 310.8 million ( US$ 225.07 million) in October 2017. Construction began at the end of 2017, with expected completion in 2026. [5] [6]
Three station names – 'Prince Edward Road', 'Palmer Road' and 'Parsi Road' – were shortlisted by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) for public voting. [2] [7] The station name was then finalised as Prince Edward Road. [8] [9]
To facilitate the station's construction, the Shenton Way Bus Terminal was relocated on 25 June 2017. [10] [11] On 8 March 2020, the concrete casting for the station's underground roof slab was completed. The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Sun Wu has also completed half of the tunnelling works towards the adjacent Cantonment station. [12] Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, tunnelling work was briefly suspended to prevent any spread of the virus. [13] In September, the Sun Wu TBM managed to tunnel underneath the old Tanjong Pagar Railway station building. The tunnelling towards the station required close monitoring with devices installed to ensure no damage made to the sculptures and interior of the station. [14]
Prince Edward Road station will serve the CCL between the Keppel and Marina Bay stations. The official station code is CC32. [15] Prince Edward Road station will be located near Bestway Building and the heritage buildings of Hock Teck See Temple and Masjid Haji Muhammad Salleh. [10] [16] [17]
Designed by RDC Architects, the station will have two entrances. [18] Prince Edward station will have three underground levels with two island platforms. [12] The concourse will have a motif resembling a ship hull. [18] At 297 metres (974 ft) long, with a depth of 48 metres (157 ft) and a width of 30 metres (98 ft), [19] the station is the longest among the CCL6 stations. [18]
The station will serve as a cross-platform interchange with a future line.
The Mass Rapid Transit system, locally known by the initialism MRT, is a rapid transit system in Singapore and the island country's principal mode of railway transportation. The system commenced operations in November 1987 after two decades of planning with an initial 6 km (3.7 mi) stretch consisting of five stations. The network has since grown to span the length and breadth of the country's main island – with the exception of the forested core and the rural northwestern region – in accordance with Singapore's aim of developing a comprehensive rail network as the backbone of the country's public transportation system, averaging a daily ridership of 3.45 million in 2023.
The Circle Line (CCL) is a medium-capacity Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line in Singapore. It runs in a loop from Dhoby Ghaut station in the city-centre to HarbourFront station in the south via Bishan station in the centre of the country. It also has a branch to Marina Bay station from Promenade station, which will be extended to HarbourFront station from 2026 to form a complete loop. Coloured orange on the rail map, the fully-underground line is approximately 35.5 kilometres (22.1 mi) long with 30 stations. Travelling from one end of the line to the other takes about an hour.
Outram Park MRT station is an underground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) interchange station in Singapore. The station is on the East–West, North East and Thomson–East Coast lines, and is located near the junction of Outram Road, Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road on the boundary of Bukit Merah and Outram planning areas. It is the closest MRT station to Singapore General Hospital, the Police Cantonment Complex, Outram Community Hospital and the Health Promotion Board. The station was included in the early plans of the MRT network in 1982; it was constructed as part of the Phase I MRT segment from Novena, and was completed in December 1987.
HarbourFront MRT station is an underground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) interchange station in Singapore. The termini of the North East line (NEL) and Circle line (CCL), the station serves the HarbourFront area and Sentosa. Surrounding retail and commercial developments include VivoCity and HarbourFront Centre, and the station is near HarbourFront Bus Interchange and the Singapore Cruise Centre.
Bishan MRT station is a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) interchange station on the North–South (NSL) and Circle (CCL) lines in Bishan, Singapore. The station is located along Bishan Road within the town centre; it is integrated with Junction 8 shopping centre and is close to Bishan Bus Interchange.
