The Kerala state assembly election of 2006, part of a series of state assembly elections in 2006, was scheduled to occur in three phases. The first phase was held on April 22, 2006, when 59 out of the 140 constituencies in Kerala voted. The second was held on April 29, 2006 for the 66 constituencies in central Kerala. The last phase of polling for the remaining 15 constituencies was on May 3, 2006. The counting was conducted on May 11, 2006.

Kerala State in southern India

Kerala, locally known as Keralam, is a state on the southwestern, Malabar Coast of India. It was formed on 1 November 1956, following passage of the States Reorganisation Act, by combining Malayalam-speaking regions. Spread over 38,863 km2 (15,005 sq mi), Kerala is the twenty-second largest Indian state by area. It is bordered by Karnataka to the north and northeast, Tamil Nadu to the east and south, and the Lakshadweep Sea and Arabian Sea to the west. With 33,387,677 inhabitants as per the 2011 Census, Kerala is the thirteenth-largest Indian state by population. It is divided into 14 districts with the capital being Thiruvananthapuram. Malayalam is the most widely spoken language and is also the official language of the state.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front beat the incumbent Indian National Congress-led United Democratic Front by a margin of 99/140 seats.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) political party

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) is the largest communist party in India. The party emerged from a split from the Communist Party of India in 1964. The CPI(M) was formed at the Seventh Congress of the Communist Party of India held in Calcutta from 31 October to 7 November 1964. As of 2018, CPI(M) is leading the state government in Kerala and having elected members in 8 state legislative assemblies including Kerala, West Bengal, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Jammu & Kashmir, and Rajasthan. It also leads the West Bengal Left Front. As of 2016, CPI(M) claimed to have 1,048,678 members. The highest body of the party is the Politburo.

Left Democratic Front (Kerala) political parties in Kerala

Left Democratic Front (LDF) is a coalition of left-wing political parties in the state of Kerala, India. It is one of the two major political coalitions in Kerala, the other being the United Democratic Front each of which have been in power alternatively for the last two decades. LDF won the May 2016 election, and is now in power. The coalition consists of Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist) and variety of other smaller parties.

Kerala Politics

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is a coalition of Progressive centre-right to right-wing political parties in India. At the time of its formation in 1998, it was led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and had 13 constituent parties. Its chairman was late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Also representing the alliance are L. K. Advani, former Deputy Prime Minister, who is the acting chairman of the Alliance, Narendra Modi, current Prime Minister and the Leader of the House in Lok Sabha; and Arun Jaitley, Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha and Finance minister. The coalition ruled from 1998 to 2004. The alliance returned to power in the 2014 General election with a combined vote share of 38.5%. Its leader, Narendra Modi, was sworn in as Prime Minister of India on 26 May 2014.

Communist Marxist Party is a political party in Kerala, South India. The party was founded in 1986 when Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader M. V. Raghavan was expelled from the CPI(M) due to a grave difference of opinion regarding the formation of alliances with the Muslim League. His support for forming a united front with non-secular parties such as the Muslim League in order to take on alliances led by the Indian National Congress was ultimately rejected by the CPI(M) leadership. He was subsequently expelled from the Party.

Oommen Chandy Ex chief minister of Kerala, India

Oommen Chandy is an Indian statesman and senior leader of the Indian National Congress party. He served as the Chief Minister of Kerala for two terms, from 2004 to 2006 and again from 2011 to 2016. He was also Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly from 2006 to 2011. He has represented Puthuppally as MLA in the State Assembly since 1970. On 6 June 2018 Congress President Rahul Gandhi appointed him as General Secretary of All India Congress Committee in charge of the crucial state of Andhra Pradesh. He is now the Congress Working Committee member.

The United Democratic Front (UDF) is an alliance of political parties in Kerala state, India, created by the prominent Indian National Congress (INC) party leader Shri. K. Karunakaran in the 1970s. Since its formation, the coalition has sustained itself on support from different social, caste and religious groups as a powerful bloc to take on the Communist Party of India (Marxist) led Left Democratic Front (LDF). This alliance is led by the INC party in the state of Kerala. In the 2016 Legislative assembly elections UDF just won 47 out of 140 seats and hence lost the power again to Left Democratic Front. Later in August 2016 KC(M)Kerala Congress (M) left the alliance. In January 2018 Janatha Dal(United) left the alliance from UDF. In 2018 Kerala Congress (M) made a re-entry to the front.

At present, the party has one MLA in the state Legislative Assembly, namely K. B. Ganesh Kumar, a well-known film actor and son of R. Balakrishna Pillai, who has been representing the Pathanapuram constituency in Kollam District since 2001. The Kerala Congress (B) was a constituent of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) until 2016 and is now part of Left Democratic Front. K B Ganesh Kumar served as a minister in the UDF government led by Oommen Chandy beginning May 18, 2011 until his resignation on April 1, 2013.

Anto Antony Punnathaniyil is a member of the 15th & 16th Lok Sabha from the Pathanamthitta electoral district in Kerala. He is a member of the Indian National Congress and on 16 May 2009, in the first election held in this newly apportioned district, he was elected as a United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate by 408,232 votes over K. Ananthagopan of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) with 297,026; B. Radhakrishna Menon of the Bharatiya Janata Party with 56,294 and three other candidates.. In 2014 general elections, he was re-elected from the same constituency with a margin of 58,836 against LDF supported opponent independent candidate Mr. Peelipose Thomas, who was an ex DCC president.

The thirteenth legislative assembly election was held on 13 April 2011 to elect members of the 140 constituencies in Kerala. Election results were released on 13 May 2011. The results proved to be one of the closest elections in Kerala's history, with the UDF beating the LDF by a margin of 4 seats.

The Indian general election, 2014 polls in Kerala were held for the twenty Lok Sabha seats in the state on 10 April 2014. The total voter strength of Kerala is 24,251,937 and the percentage of voters who exercised their right was an impressive 74.04%. The results of the elections were declared on 16 May 2014.

P. Jayarajan Indian politician

P. Jayarajan is a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Kerala state committee and former member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly who represented Koothuparamba constituency from 2001 to 2006. He served as the secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist) Kannur District Committee from 2010 until he was replaced by M.V. Jayarajan in March 2019. In March 2019 he was named the Left Democratic Front candidate from Vatakara for the 2019 Indian General Elections.
