Kirkstall Power Station was a coal-fired unit opened in 1930, serving the city of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England.
It was situated in Kirkstall by the River Aire north-west of Leeds and had its own wharf for delivery of coal via the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.
The City of Leeds Corporation purchased the 104 acre (42.1 ha) Kirkstall site in 1926. Construction began in 1928, and the first electricity was generated in October 1930. [1] The station was equipped with two British Thomson-Houston 25 MW turbo-alternators. [2] An additional 30 MW turbo-alternator was ordered from BTH in 1935. [3] By 1948, further extensions to the site had increased its combined generating capacity to around 200 MW. [4] The station was later partly converted to oil firing during 1964, which rendered the coal sidings and associated shunters redundant. [5]
The boilers were pulverised fuel and oil fired. There were 9 water tube Stirling/ International Combustion boilers working at 490 psi; in the 1947-48 extension there were International Combustion boilers operating at 650 psi. [6] They were capable of delivering 2,370,000 lb/h (29.9 kg/s) of steam at 450 & 600 psi (31.0 & 41.4 bar) and 382/454 °C. [7] The generating capacity in 1972 was 200 MW from five 30 MW turbo-alternators. Steam condensing and cooling was by river water and concrete cooling towers, each tower was rated at 2.5 million gallons per hour. [6] In the year ending 31 March 1972 its load factor (the average load as a per cent of maximum output capacity) was 20.5 per cent. [7]
The electricity output of the power station is shown in the tables. These comprised the HP plant with an installed capacity of 57 MW and the LP plant with an installed capacity of 133 MW. [6] [7] [8]

Kirkstall Power Station was closed in 1976 and was subsequently demolished, the cooling towers were demolished in 1979. [9] None of the structure remains. The majority of the power station site is covered by a secure caravan storage depot, golf course and artificial football pitches with the rest of the site now forming part of the Kirkstall Valley Nature Reserve. The wharf used to unload coal is now a marina for canal and pleasureboats.
The major substations adjacent to the former power station still remain, supplying electrical power to much of Burley, Kirkstall, Armley and Bramley.
In March 1950 there were reports that grit and dirt had been discharged from the chimneys of Kirkstall Power Station. [10] The matter was raised in Parliament and the Minister of Fuel and Power replied that the British Electricity Authority had been making alterations to the plant, which should reduce the nuisance. These included new electrostatic precipitators and ash handing plant. [10]
In July 1956 scaffolding had been erected on a 320 ft chimney at the station. The scaffolding collapsed and four men fell 200 ft, one was killed and three badly injured. [11]
Kearsley Power Station was a coal-fired power station in Stoneclough, near Kearsley, Bolton, England. It was designed in 1927 by Dr H.F. Parshall for the Lancashire Electric Power Company. The original installation was known as Kearsley 'A', comprising two British Thomson-Houston (B.T.H.) turbo-alternators rated at 32.25 megawatts each. Further extensions became Kearsley 'B' (1936/38), with two more B.T.H. turbo-alternators each capable of producing 51.6 megawatts. Finally Kearsley 'C' (1949) was completed with two more B.T.H. machines rated at 52 megawatts each. The station closed in 1980 when only 'B' station remained operational. The 5 cooling towers were demolished during the week of 14 May 1985.
West Ham Power Station was a coal-fired power station on Bow Creek at Canning Town, in east London. It was often referred to informally as Canning Town Power Station.
Rotherham power station was a coal-fired power station sited close to the centre of Rotherham in South Yorkshire.

Doncaster Power Station refers to two coal-fired electricity generating stations situated in the centre of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England. Doncaster A provided electricity to the town from 1900 to 1958, and the B station from 1953 to 1983.
Westwood Power Station was a coal-fired power station situated adjacent to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Ince-in-Makerfield in Greater Manchester, North West England.
Darlington power station refers to a series of two coal-fired power stations situated in Darlington in County Durham, North East England.
Skelton Grange Power Station refers to two now-demolished coal fired power stations that served the city of Leeds and surrounding areas. They were located in the Stourton area of the city. The power stations were built in the early 1950s and early 1960s, taken out of use in 1983 and 1994 and subsequently dismantled but the associated 275 kV switching substation was retained and remains in use.
Watford Power Station was a coal-fired power station situated in Watford's Riverside area. The station was built by the Watford Corporation Electricity Department starting with the installation of cables in 1899 with completion around 1900, near the banks of the River Colne. A gas turbine power station was commissioned in 1980.
The Newton Abbot power station was a power station originally built in 1898 at Jetty Marsh, Newton Abbot as a small station to serve the local community. It was subsequently significantly expanded, and changed from direct current to alternating current when bought by the Torquay corporation in the 1920s to provide power across a wider area towards the coast.
Southampton Power Station was a coal fired power station built by Southampton Corporation that operated between 1904 and 1977.
Bradford Power Station was an electricity generating site located on Valley Road in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. The primary source of fuel was coal which was railed into the sidings adjacent to the Bradford Forster Square to Shipley railway line. The plant operated for 79 years and had cooling towers constructed from wood and was noted for its 300-foot (91 m) chimney that was supposed to vent smoke away from the valley floor in Bradford Dale that the power station was located on.
Blackburn power stations are a series of electricity generating stations that have provided electric power to the town of Blackburn and the wider area from 1895 to the present. The first station in Jubilee Street, Blackburn began operating in 1895. A new larger station known as Blackburn East or Whitebirk power station was commissioned in 1921 and was rebuilt in stages over the period 1942 to 1955. Whitebirk station closed in 1976. The 60 MW Blackburn Mill Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power station has generated electricity since 2002. The Blackburn energy from waste (EfW) plant is currently (2020) being planned.
Lincoln power stations were a sequence of electricity generating stations that provided electric power to the City of Lincoln and the wider area between 1898 and 1977. The first station was built by Lincoln Corporation in 1898 on Brayford Wharf. During the First World War the engineering company Clayton and Shuttleworth built a power station in Spa Road to meet its own electricity needs. This private station was bought by Lincoln Corporation in 1918 and was expanded to meet rising demand and supplied electricity until it was demolished in 1953. A final power station was built on the Spa Road site over the period 1947–57 and operated until it was decommissioned in 1977.
Stourport power stations were two electricity generating stations that supplied electricity to Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire and to the wider West Midlands area from 1927 to 1984. The two stations, A (1927–78) and B (1950–84), were collocated on a joint site adjacent to the River Severn south of Stourport-on-Severn.
Huddersfield power station supplied electricity to the town of Huddersfield and the wider area from 1893 to 1981. It was owned and operated by Huddersfield Corporation until the nationalisation of the electricity supply industry in 1948. The power station was redeveloped several times: including the incorporation of new plant in the 1910s, and in the 1930s to 1950s. The station was decommissioned in October 1981.
The Thornhill power station generated and supplied electricity to the town of Dewsbury and the wider regional area from 1902 to 1982, and again from 1998. The first generating station on the site was owned and operated by the Yorkshire Electric Power Company. Following nationalisation of the British electricity supply industry in 1948 Thornhill power station was operated by a succession of state owned bodies. The power station was redeveloped with new plant in 1915, 1925, 1932–37 and 1950–54. The coal-fired steam station was decommissioned in 1982, and was subsequently demolished. A gas turbine power station on the site was commissioned in 1998.
Halifax power station supplied electricity to the town of Halifax and the wider area from 1894 to the 1960s. It was owned and operated by Halifax Corporation until the nationalisation of the electricity supply industry in 1948. The power station was redeveloped several times and at its peak had a generating capacity of 48 MW.
Leeds power station, also known as Whitehall Road power station, supplied electricity to the city of Leeds and the surrounding area from 1893 to 1965. It was initially built, owned and operated by the Yorkshire House-to-House Electricity Company Limited. Leeds Corporation took over the electricity undertaking in 1898 and generated and distributed electricity until the nationalisation of the British electricity supply industry in 1948. The power station was redeveloped several times to meet increasing demand for electricity.
