Knabs Ridge Wind Farm is an electricity generating site just south of the A59 road near to Felliscliffe, Kettlesing, North Yorkshire, England. It was the first wind farm to be built in North Yorkshire in over 15 years, [1] and was believed to be the first time that civilian air traffic was considered in the planning permission process.

History

The proposal to build a wind farm on the site was first unveiled in 2003 when 6,000 homes in the area were leafleted with information about the wind farm. At that early stage, many objections were registered, including one from the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE). [2] Planning consent for the wind farm was rejected by Harrogate Borough Council in November 2004. The management team at Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA), whose runway is only 10 miles (16 km) south of the site, stated that the farm would have a detrimental effect on air traffic control as it could create false indications of aircraft. [3] Other objectors pointed out that the site of was only 50 feet (15 m) away from the Nidderdale AONB. [4] [5] Npower appealed against the decision and the application then went before a public enquiry, [6] which gained government consent in September 2005. [4] The objection by LBA towards the wind farm is believed to be the first time that civilian air traffic paths have featured in an onshore wind farm consent inquiry. The planning inspector also rejected the idea of affixing red lights to each tower as it was thought that they could interfere with drivers concentration on the adjacent A59 road. [3]

Building of the £13 million wind farm 3 miles (4.8 km) west of Harrogate in Felliscliffe by the A59 road, [7] was started in March 2007, completed by the summer of 2008 with full commissioning of the site starting in November of the same year. The wind farm consists of eight towers which are 190 feet (58 m) high, with the addition of the rotors, the full height that they extend to is 305 feet (93 m). [8] [9] The site covers an area of 197 acres (80 ha) at an elevation of 708 feet (216 m) above sea level, so they can be seen from some distance away. [10] [11]

Each generating unit was constructed by Senvion and is capable of generating 2 MW of power with the whole farm itself generating 16 MW in total. [12] [13] This provides enough electricity per year to power 7,000 homes and offsets over 23,000 tonnes (25,000 tons) of carbon dioxide going into the environment on an annual basis. [14]

One of the turbines caught fire in January 2017 and had to be extinguished by North Yorkshire fire service. Each unit operates in tandem with three others (the Knabs Ridge site has eight units, which operate in two groups of four) which resulted in all four generating units being turned off. [9] [15] Seven months after the fire, the owners were seeking to overturn a condition in the planning permission of the site that was set in 2005. If a turbine was to not generate power in over twelve months, then the owners are required to remove the tower and return the land to grazing purposes for cattle. By October 2017, the tower was still not active. [16]

Dogger Bank Wind Farm is a group of offshore wind farms under construction 125 to 290 kilometres off the east coast of Yorkshire, England in the North Sea. It was developed by the Forewind consortium, while three phases were envisioned - first phase, second phase and third phase. In 2015 the third phase was abandoned, while first and second phase was granted consent. It is expected that the Dogger Bank development will consist of four offshore wind farms, each with a capacity of up to 1.2 GW, creating a combined capacity of 4.8 GW.

The European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC), also known as the Aberdeen Bay Wind Farm is an offshore wind test and demonstration facility located around 3 kilometres off the east coast of Aberdeenshire, in the North Sea, Scotland. It was developed by the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre consortium. The scheme is relatively small - it consists of 11 wind turbines with an installed capacity of 93.2 megawatts. It is located between Blackdog and Bridge of Don near Aberdeen. First power was generated in July 2018, with full commissioning following in September 2018.

Hornsea Wind Farm is a Round 3 wind farm which began construction in 2018. Sited in the North Sea 120 km (75 mi) off the east coast of England, the eventual wind farm group is planned to have a total capacity of up to 6 gigawatt (GW).

Ovenden Moor Wind Farm is a wind powered electricity generating site in England. Ovenden Moor is located north of Halifax and west of Bradford in West Yorkshire. The site was opened in 1993 with 23 turbines, but these were later removed in favour of larger turbines but with 14 fewer towers. This updated the output of the site from 9.2 MWh to 22.5 MWh with an expected generation lifetime of 25 years. As the turbines can be seen from some distance and the fact that they overlook the Brontë Country to the north, they have the subject of continued criticism and objections.

It was granted full planning permission in early 2015 when the Ministry of Defence dropped their objection to the site. This was despite the apparent vocal opposition by local people and councillors. It started generating electricity in August 2016.
