Lebukhali Cantonment is the headquarters of 7th Infantry Division of Bangladesh Army. [1] It is located in Lebukhali, Barishal. The area of the cantonment is 1532 acres. The project will be completed by the Ministry of Defence by June 2021. [2] [3]
The "Sheikh Hasina Cantonment" was planned to be established as part of the governments long-term modernization scheme for Bangladesh Armed Forces called the "Forces Goal 2030".
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina green lighted the project in 2014 [4] which she first announced during a winter exercise of the Bangladesh Armed Forces on January 16, 2015. [5]
The executive committee of the National Economic Council approved the project "Establishment of Sheikh Hasina Cantonment, Barishal" on November 14, 2017. The set up of this cantonment will cost approximately Tk 1,699 crore. [2] [3]
On February 8, 2018, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the cantonment. [6] [7] After the fall of Prime minister Sheikh Hasina's administration following a mass uprising on 5 August 2024, the cantonment was renamed to "Lebukhali Cantonment".[ citation needed ]
The Bangladesh Armed Forces are the military forces of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. They consist of the three uniformed military services: the Bangladesh Army, the Bangladesh Navy, and the Bangladesh Air Force. The Armed Forces are under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Defence of the Government of Bangladesh, and are directly administered by the Armed Forces Division of the Prime Minister's Office. The President of Bangladesh serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Bangladesh Armed Forces. Bangladesh has the third-largest defence budget in South Asia. The Bangladeshi military is the 37th strongest in the world and the third most powerful military force in South Asia. Border Guard Bangladesh and Bangladesh Coast Guard are under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Home Affairs during peacetime, but during wartime, they fall under the command of the Bangladesh Army and the Bangladesh Navy, respectively.
Sheikh Hasina is a Bangladeshi politician who served as the tenth prime minister of Bangladesh from June 1996 to July 2001 and again from January 2009 to August 2024. She is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first president of Bangladesh. She served in the position of prime minister for over 20 years, making her the longest-serving prime minister in history of Bangladesh. Thus, she became the world's longest-serving female head of government. Her authoritarian regime ended in self-imposed exile following an uprising in 2024.
The Bangladesh Navy is the naval warfare branch of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, responsible for the defence of Bangladesh's 118,813 square kilometres (45,874 sq mi) of maritime territorial area from any external threat, and the security of sea ports and exclusive economic zones of Bangladesh. Bangladesh Navy is a front line disaster management force in Bangladesh. The navy takes part in United Nations peacekeeping.
The Bangladesh Army is the land warfare branch, and the largest component of the Bangladesh Armed Forces. The primary mission of the Army is to defend the land of Bangladesh from any external attack. Control of personnel and operations is administered by the Army Headquarters, Dhaka Cantonment. Forces Goal 2030 is a military modernisation programme in Bangladesh that began in 2009 and was revised in 2017. It was designed to enhance the capabilities of three service branches of the Armed Forces: the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. The primary focus of the modernisation programme is the reformation of the military organisation, expansion of the forces, transformation of the indigenous defence sector to support research and manufacturing, and acquisition of modern military weapons.
Ramu Cantonment is a cantonment located in Ramu of Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. It is the headquarters of 10th Infantry Division of Bangladesh Army. The area of the cantonment is 3000 acres.
Abdur Rob Serniabat (1921-1975) was a Bangladeshi politician and the former water resources minister. He was the brother-in-law of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, founding father of Bangladesh, and the maternal uncle of Sheikh Hasina, the five-time prime minister of Bangladesh. He was killed during the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 15 August 1975.

The 99th Composite Brigade is a brigade formation of the Bangladesh Army. It was raised per the project "Establishment of 99 Composite Brigade for Safety and Security of Padma Multipurpose Bridge" and army development project "Forces Goal 2030".
The Karnaphuli Tunnel, also known as Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, is an underwater expressway tunnel in the port city of Chittagong, Bangladesh under the Karnaphuli River. The length of the entire route is 9.39 kilometres (5.83 mi), with the tunnel making up 3.32 kilometres (2.06 mi) of the length. The tunnel diameter is 10.80 metres (35.4 ft). It is expected, over 17,000 vehicles will be able to use this tunnel daily. The cost of the project is estimated at US$1.1B, of which around half is financed by the Exim Bank of China. The Karnaphuli Tunnel is the first underwater road tunnel in South Asia. It is expected to improve the Dhaka–Chittagong–Cox's Bazar highway network. A Chinese company, China Communications Construction Company, was selected to construct it. The tunnel segments were produced in Zhenjiang, China.
BNS Sher-e-Bangla is the first all service naval base being developed for the Bangladesh Navy at Rabnabad, Patuakhali. With an area of 700 acres. this is the largest naval base of the Bangladesh Navy. Of that area, 300 acres of land have been developed for naval base and 400 acres is devoted for naval aviation and submarine operations. It is named after the 1st Prime Minister of Bengal, A. K. Fazlul Huq, who was known as Sher-e-Bangla or the Tiger of Bengal.
The 7th Infantry Division is a formation of the Bangladesh Army. It's located in Lebukhali of Patuakhali District. This is the first Bangladesh Army formation in the Barisal Division. It was formed as part of the development vision of Bangladesh Armed Forces Forces Goal 2030. This project will have an estimated cost of Tk. 16.99 billion and will be implemented by Ministry of Defence.
Bangabandhu Memorial Trust is a trust in Bangladesh that was created to remember Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh. His daughter and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is the chair of the trust.
General Waker-Uz-Zaman SBP OSP SGP psc is a four star general of the Bangladesh Army who is the current Chief of Army Staff (CAS) of the Bangladesh Army since 23 June 2024. Prior to his appointment as CAS, he served as the Chief of General Staff (CGS) of the Bangladesh Army. He is also the Colonel Commandant of Army Service Corps. Previously, he served as the 15th Principal Staff Officer of Armed Forces Division.
The Mitali Express (13131/13132) train is an international express rail service which connects the Indian city of Siliguri with the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka every week. Together with the Maitree Express train and the Bandhan Express train, the Mitali Express train is the third modern-day fully air conditioned passenger train link between the Indian state of West Bengal and Bangladesh. Both the prime ministers of the two neighbouring countries officially inaugurated the non-stop passenger train with ten compartments on the new 513 km route from Dhaka on 26 March 2021, the day Bangladesh celebrated the golden jubilee of its independence. The prime minister of India was in Dhaka to mark the auspicious occasion of fifty years of independence of Bangladesh. After 56 years of stoppage, this train route recreates the previous Siliguri route between India and Bangladesh. A valid visa and passport is required beforehand to purchase a ticket for the Mitali Express train. Tickets are available at Dhaka Kamalapur railway station in Dhaka, Bangladesh and at New Jalpaiguri railway station in Siliguri, India.
Payra Bridge is a road bridge across the Burishwar River. It connects Barisal and Patuakhali, linking the southwest of the country to the northern regions.
