Lebukhali Cantonment is the headquarters of 7th Infantry Division of Bangladesh Army. [1] It is located in Lebukhali, Barishal. The area of the cantonment is 1532 acres. The project will be completed by the Ministry of Defence by June 2021. [2] [3]

History

The "Sheikh Hasina Cantonment" will be established as part of the governments long-term modernization scheme for Bangladesh Armed Forces called the "Forces Goal 2030".

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina green lighted the project in 2014. [4] She first announced it during a winter exercise of Bangladesh Armed Forces on January 16, 2015. [5]

The executive committee of the National Economic Council approved the project "Establishment of Sheikh Hasina Cantonment, Barishal" on November 14, 2017. The set up of this cantonment will cost approximately Tk 1,699 crore. [2] [3]

On February 8, 2018, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the cantonment. [6] [7]

She served in the position of prime minister for over 20 years, making her the longest-serving prime minister in history of Bangladesh. Forces Goal 2030 is a military modernization program which began in 2009 and was revised in 2017. It was designed to enhance the capabilities of three service branches of Bangladesh Armed Forces: the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. The primary focus of the modernization program is the reformation of the military organization, expansion of the forces, the transformation of the indigenous defense sector to support research and manufacturing, and acquisition of modern military weapons. The requirement for modernization was realized in the aftermath of 2008 Bangladesh–Myanmar naval standoff later resulting in Bangladesh's favour. One of the primary objectives of the modernization program is to develop a three-dimensional force capable of conducting multi-platform warfare.

Karnaphuli Tunnel, also known as Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, is an underwater expressway tunnel in the port city of Chittagong, Bangladesh under the Karnaphuli River. The length of the entire route is 9.39 kilometres (5.83 mi), with the tunnel making up 3.32 kilometres (2.06 mi) of the length. The tunnel diameter is 10.80 metres (35.4 ft). It is expected, over 17,000 vehicles will be able to use this tunnel daily. The cost of the project is estimated at US$1.1B, of which around half is financed by the Exim Bank of China. The Karnaphuli Tunnel is the first underwater road tunnel in South Asia. It is expected to improve the Dhaka–Chittagong–Cox's Bazar highway network. A Chinese company, China Communications Construction Company, was selected to construct it. The tunnel segments were produced in Zhenjiang, China.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">BNS Sher-e-Bangla</span> Naval base of Bangladesh Navy

BNS Sher-e-Bangla is the first all service naval base being developed for the Bangladesh Navy at Rabnabad, Patuakhali. With an area of 700 acres. this is the largest naval base of the Bangladesh Navy. Of that area, 300 acres of land have been developed for naval base and 400 acres is devoted for naval aviation and submarine operations. It is named after the 1st Prime Minister of Bengal, A. K. Fazlul Huq, who was known as Sher-e-Bangla or the Tiger of Bengal.
