The Leen Valley is the wide valley formed by the River Leen within the county of Nottinghamshire.
The River Leen is a 15-mile (24 km) long tributary of the River Trent that flows through Nottinghamshire, and the city of Nottingham in the East Midlands of England.
Nottinghamshire is a county in the East Midlands region of England, bordering South Yorkshire to the north-west, Lincolnshire to the east, Leicestershire to the south, and Derbyshire to the west. The traditional county town is Nottingham, though the county council is based at County Hall, Nottinghamshire in West Bridgford in the borough of Rushcliffe, at a site facing Nottingham over the River Trent.
The Leen Valley was once an important centre for hosiery and coal mining industries. [1] [2] Today, although light manufacturing continues, the valley is increasingly becoming part of the commuter belt for Nottingham. Settlements within the valley include Annesley, Bestwood Village, Newstead, Papplewick, Linby, Hucknall, Bulwell, Sherwood, Basford, Lenton and Nottingham. [3] Leen Valley is also the name of one of the Council wards, which lies within Nottingham, and a housing estate in the north of Nottingham, which is located in a valley created by the Leen within the larger Leen Valley area. [4] The population of the ward at the 2011 census was 10,702. [5]
Hosiery, also referred to as legwear, describes garments worn directly on the feet and legs. The term originated as the collective term for products of which a maker or seller is termed a hosier; and those products are also known generically as hose. The term is also used for all types of knitted fabric, and its thickness and weight is defined by denier or opacity. Lower denier measurements of 5 to 15 describe a hose which may be sheer in appearance, whereas styles of 40 and above are dense, with little to no light able to come through on 100 denier items.

In the United Kingdom and South Africa, a coal mine and its structures are a colliery, a coal mine a pit, and the above-ground structures the pit head. In Australia, "colliery" generally refers to an underground coal mine. In the United States, "colliery" has been used to describe a coal mine operation but nowadays the word is not commonly used.
Annesley is a village and civil parish in the Ashfield district, in Nottinghamshire, England, located between Hucknall and Kirkby-in-Ashfield. According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 1,096, increasing to 1,162 at the 2011 Census. Nearby to the west is Annesley Woodhouse. Presumably the Annesley family, now spread worldwide, originally took its name from that of the village.
