Lejeuneaceae is the largest family of liverworts. Most of its members are epiphytes found in the tropics, while others can be found in temperate regions.
The main characteristics of the family are that:
Some large genera of the family are Lejeunea , Ceratolejeunea (around 84 species, [2] ) and Cheilolejeunea (around 275 species, [3] ).
The Lejeuneaceae are the largest family of liverworts with more than 1600 species, [4] which equates to roughly 20% to 25% of all liverworts. These species are assigned to 95 genera. [5]
The Marchantiophyta are a division of non-vascular land plants commonly referred to as hepatics or liverworts. Like mosses and hornworts, they have a gametophyte-dominant life cycle, in which cells of the plant carry only a single set of genetic information.
Richard Spruce was an English botanist specializing in bryology. One of the great Victorian botanical explorers, Spruce spent 15 years exploring the Amazon from the Andes to its mouth, and was one of the first Europeans to visit many of the places where he collected specimens. Spruce discovered and named a number of new plant species, and corresponded with some of the leading botanists of the nineteenth century.
Jungermanniaceae is the namesake family of leafy liverworts. It is a group of small plants that are widely distributed. Several genera formerly included within the family are now classified in the Myliaceae or Solenostomataceae.
Lepidoziaceae is a family of leafy liverworts. It is a group of small plants that are widely distributed.
Bryopteris is a genus of liverworts in family Lejeuneaceae.
Fulfordianthus is a genus of liverworts in the family Lejeuneaceae. It is found in central and southern America.
Leptolejeunea is a genus of liverwort in family Lejeuneaceae.
Myriocoleopsis is a genus of liverwort in family Lejeuneaceae.
Lejeunea drehwaldii, synonym Sphaerolejeunea umbilicata, is a species of liverworts in the family Lejeuneaceae. It is endemic to Colombia. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.
Spruceanthus is a genus of liverwort in family Lejeuneaceae.
Haplomitriopsida is a newly recognized class of liverworts comprising fifteen species in three genera. Recent cladistic analyses of nuclear, mitochondrial, and plastid gene sequences place this monophyletic group as the basal sister group to all other liverworts. The group thus provides a unique insight into the early evolution of liverworts in particular and of land plants in general.
Eliza Amy Hodgson was a New Zealand botanist who specialised in liverworts.
