Lejeunea is a genus of leafy liverworts in the Lejeuneaceae family. [1] The GBIF lists up to 592 species (as of October 2022), along with a worldwide distribution. [2] World Flora Online lists up to 531 species (as of July 2023). [3]
The genus was circumscribed by Marie-Anne Libert in Ann. Gen. Sci. Phys. vol.6 on page 372 in 1820. [3]
The genus name of Lejeunea is in honour of Alexandre Louis Simon Lejeune (1779–1858), who was a Belgian physician and botanist. [4]
Richard Spruce was an English botanist specializing in bryology. One of the great Victorian botanical explorers, Spruce spent 15 years exploring the Amazon from the Andes to its mouth, and was one of the first Europeans to visit many of the places where he collected specimens. Spruce discovered and named a number of new plant species, and corresponded with some of the leading botanists of the nineteenth century.
