Leslie Chew Kwee Hoe SC PBM is a Singaporean legal academic and law professor. He is the founding Dean of the School of Law, Singapore University of Social Sciences, Singapore's third law school. [1] He also regularly teaches in other institutions including the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators and the NUS Faculty of Law, as well as the Lee Kwan Yew School of Public Policy. [2] Chew is the founding President of the Asia Pacific Institute of Experts. [3]

Career

Chew was appointed Senior Counsel in 2000. [4]

In 2002, Chew was awarded the Public Service Medal by the President of the Republic of Singapore for his contributions to the Military Court of Appeal. [5]

Chew started his legal career as a legal service officer from 1978 to 1981 before leaving for private practice, first serving in Lee & Lim before joining KhattarWong & Partners where he became Joint Managing Partner. [6] He then joined Gurbani & Co. [7] From 2007 to 2014, Chew was a District Judge and subsequently a Senior District Judge heading the Civil Justice Division of the State Courts (previously known as the Subordinate Courts). [4] After a distinguished career on the Bench, Chew retired in 2014. [8] Chew credits the former Registrar of the Supreme Court of Singapore, Mr Chiam Boon Keng, and Mr Sat Pal Khattar, as being major influences in his career. [9]

In 2016, Chew was appointed the founding Dean of the School of Law, Singapore University of Social Sciences. [10] [11] In that capacity, he has spoken about the need to strengthen the values inherent in the legal profession. [12]

Chew has also published a book on arbitration, entitled "Introduction to the Law and Practice of Arbitration in Singapore". [13]

The National University of Singapore Faculty of Law is Singapore's oldest law school. NUS Law was initially established in 1956 as the Department of Law in the University of Malaya, and subsequently, University of Singapore. After its establishment, NUS Law was Singapore's only law school for half a century, until the subsequent establishment of the SMU School of Law in 2007 and the SUSS School of Law in 2017. NUS Law is currently located at the NUS Bukit Timah Campus. The current dean of NUS Law is Andrew Simester. Internationally, NUS Law has been ranked twelfth by the QS World University Rankings by Subject in 2024 and eleventh by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject in 2024.

Tan Lee Meng is an emeritus professor in the National University of Singapore Faculty of Law. He was first appointed as a Judicial Commissioner on 2 February 1997, and then appointed Judge in August 1997, serving until he reached the mandatory retirement age of 65 on 7 July 2013. He also completed two consecutive three-year terms of service as a Senior Judge of the Supreme Court of Singapore. He returned to the NUS after his time in the judiciary, having made "outstanding contributions to the Supreme Court, the Legal Service and the legal profession." At the time of his appointment, Tan was the first ever academic to be appointed to the Supreme Court and his judgments were said to be "instructive, soundly reasoned, and easy to grasp."

Alvin Yeo Khirn Hai was a Singaporean lawyer and politician who co-founded WongPartnership, one of the Big Four law firms in Singapore. As a member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he was the Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Nanyang division of Hong Kah GRC between 2006 and 2011, and later Chua Chu Kang GRC between 2011 and 2015.

Tan Cheng Han is a Singaporean lawyer and legal academic. Until 2012, he was the dean of the National University of Singapore Faculty of Law, where he taught contract law and company Law and directed the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business. Institute for Adult Learning Singapore (IAL) is the Training and Adult Education autonomous institute within the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS). It was established in 2008. IAL offers a range of education programmes such as Master's degree, WSQ Diploma, WSQ Advanced Certificate, and short courses in the field of training and adult education.
