D.C. United is an American professional soccer club based in Washington, D.C. that competes in Major League Soccer (MLS), the top tier professional soccer league in the United States and Canada. It is one of the ten charter clubs of MLS, having competed in the league since its inception, in 1996. Over the club's history, D.C. United has been considered to be the flagship franchise of MLS winning 13 international and domestic titles. Domestically, United has won the U.S. Open Cup thrice, and holds an MLS record for most MLS Cup and MLS Supporters' Shields apiece, winning each honor four times. [1] United was also the first club to win both the Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup consecutively. [2]

Contents

On the international stage, D.C. United has competed in both the CONCACAF Champions League and its predecessor the CONCACAF Champions' Cup. The club is also the only American soccer club to ever compete in a CONMEBOL competition, participating in the 2005 and 2007 editions of the Copa Sudamericana. In 1998, the club won the CONCACAF Champions' Cup. [3] [4] Subsequently, United won the now-defunct Copa Interamericana, a competition between the CONCACAF on CONMEBOL champion that year to determine the best soccer club in the Americas. In the 1998, and final edition of the Copa Interamericana, D.C. United defeated Vasco da Gama of Brazil to take the title. [5]

Marco Antonio Etcheverry Vargas is a Bolivian former professional footballer who played as a forward or midfielder. A creative playmaker, he is considered one of the greatest Bolivian players of all time. Etcheverry played for D.C. United of Major League Soccer from 1996 to 2003. He helped D.C United win eight trophies during that time, and was nominated to the MLS Best XI in four consecutive seasons from 1996 to 1999.

Roy Lee Lassiter is an American former professional soccer player. who played as a forward. He played the first few years of his professional career in Costa Rica. He returned to the United States to play in Major League Soccer when that league was launched in 1996, and from 1996 to 1999 he was one of the most prolific goal scorers in MLS. Lassiter is currently the assistant coach of MLS Next Pro club Houston Dynamo 2.

The Copa Interamericana is an annual club football competition contested between a representative from North America (CONCACAF) and South America (CONMEBOL). Established in 1969, it was discontinued in 1998 after CONCACAF clubs, particularly those from Mexico, began participating in CONMEBOL competitions.

The 1998 Copa Interamericana was the 18th staging of the Copa Interamericana. The final took place between D.C. United and Vasco da Gama and was staged over two legs on 14 November 1998 and 5 December 1998. Both matches were played in the United States—the first in Washington, D.C., was won 1–0 by Vasco da Gama; the second leg in Fort Lauderdale was won 2–0 by D.C. United.

The 2013 D.C. United season was the club's eighteenth, and their eighteenth season in Major League Soccer, the top division of American soccer. The regular season began on March 2 and concluded on October 27.
