East Carolina University (ECU) is a public research university in Greenville, North Carolina. It is the fourth largest university in North Carolina and the only one in the state with both a medical school and a dental school.

David Douglas Garrard is an American former football quarterback who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 10 seasons, primarily with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He played college football for the East Carolina Pirates and was selected by the Jaguars in the fourth round of the 2002 NFL draft. Garrard became the team's starting quarterback in 2007, leading them to their first playoff win since 1999. A Pro Bowl selection in 2009, he remained the starter until he was released before the 2011 season.

Dowdy–Ficklen Stadium is the on-campus football facility at East Carolina University for the East Carolina Pirates in Greenville, North Carolina. The official capacity of the stadium is 51,000, tying it for the second largest college stadium in North Carolina. The record attendance for the stadium was on September 3, 2022, against North Carolina State University with 51,711 in attendance. The stadium is also the site of Spring Commencement exercises for the university. The field itself was commemorated as Bagwell Field in 1997.

The 2004 America East Conference baseball tournament took place from May 27 through 29 at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine. The top four regular season finishers of the league's eight teams qualified for the double-elimination tournament. In the championship game, fourth-seeded Stony Brook defeated second-seeded Maine, 3–1, to win its first tournament championship. As a result, Stony Brook received the America East's automatic bid to the 2004 NCAA tournament, the program's first in Division I.
