This is a list of Greenlandic artists who were born in or who live in Greenland.
Greenland is a North American autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. It is the largest country within the Kingdom and one of three countries which form the Kingdom, the others being Denmark proper and the Faroe Islands; the citizens of all three countries are citizens of Denmark. As Greenland is one of the Overseas Countries and Territories of the European Union, citizens of Greenland are also granted European Union citizenship. The capital and largest city of Greenland is Nuuk. Greenland lies between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. It is the world's largest island, as well as the northernmost area of the world – Kaffeklubben Island off the northern coast is the world's northernmost undisputed point of land, and Cape Morris Jesup on the mainland was thought to be so until the 1960s.
Nuuk is the capital of and most populous city in Greenland, an autonomous territory in the Kingdom of Denmark. Nuuk is the seat of government and the territory's largest cultural and economic center. The major cities from other countries closest to the capital are Iqaluit and St. John's in Canada and Reykjavík in Iceland. Nuuk contains a third of Greenland's population and its tallest building. Nuuk is also the seat of government for the Sermersooq municipality. In January 2023, it had a population of 19,604. Nuuk is considered a modernized city after the policy began in 1950.
Ilulissat, formerly Jakobshavn or Jacobshaven, is the municipal seat and largest town of the Avannaata municipality in western Greenland, located approximately 350 km (220 mi) north of the Arctic Circle. With the population of 4,670 as of 2020, it is the third-largest city in Greenland, after Nuuk and Sisimiut. The city is home to almost as many sled-dogs as people.
Law enforcement in Greenland, an autonomous country of the Kingdom of Denmark, is provided by Kalaallit Nunaanni Politiit an independent police district of Naalagaaffiup Politiivi, within the National Police of Denmark. Since 2006, Greenland has constituted one of the 12 police districts of the Rigspolitiet, headed by the chief constable known as the Politiit Pisortaat based in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland.
Jens Christian Rosing was a notable Greenlandic artist, author and storyteller. He designed the coat of arms of Greenland, many Greenlandic postage stamps, as well as illustrated children's books and created diverse works of art.
Katuaq is a cultural centre in Nuuk, Greenland. It is used for concerts, exhibitions, conferences, and as a cinema. Designed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen, it was constructed as a joint project of the Greenland Home Rule Government, the Nuuk Municipal Council and the Nordic Council of Ministers and was inaugurated on 15 February 1997.
Nuummioq is a 2009 Greenlandic drama film directed by Otto Rosing and Torben Bech and produced by Mikisoq H. Lynge. Nuummioq means "a man from Nuuk" in the Greenlandic language. Nuummioq premiered in Nuuk on 31 October 2009.
Jette Bang was a Danish photographer and film maker who is remembered for the large collection of photographs and films she took in Greenland, depicting the country and the way of life of its inhabitants before their old culture disappeared.
Aka Høegh is a Greenlandic artist. Born in Qullissat on Disko Island, she moved to Qaqortoq in her childhood, and has lived in southern Greenland ever since. As a painter, graphic artist, and sculptor, Høegh focuses on nationalistic expressionism, creating art which reflects local, traditional myths, and is steeped in heritage and local lore. She frequently incorporates legend, nature, and provincial mythos into her works, devising strong connections between her art and local tradition. During the 1970s, she was regularly cited as the main artist in establishing a Greenlandic artistic identity. In September 2013 she was honoured of Nersornaat order.
The Moravian missions in Greenland were established by the Moravian Church or United Brethren and operated between 1733 and 1900. They were operated under the auspices of the Royal Danish College of Missions until its dissolution in 1859 and were finally surrendered to the Lutheran Church of Denmark in 1900. Missionaries were allocated to the region and sometimes even sent wives who had been chosen for them and approved by the drawing of lots, a form of Cleromancy.
Inuk Silis Høegh is a Greenlandic artist and filmmaker. The son of artist Aka Høegh and photographer and film artist Ivars Silis, he grew up in an artistic environment, and his sister is Bolatta Silis Høegh, also an artist.
Julie Edel Hardenberg is a Greenlandic photographer whose picture books include The Quiet Diversity.Kuuk, curated by her and Iben Mondrup and hosted by The Nordic Institute in Greenland, explored Greenlandic identity.
Nina Kreutzmann Jørgensen is a Greenlandic-Danish singer who is popular in both Greenland and Denmark. From the 1990s, she was the lead singer in the rock band Qulleq. She has frequently performed on Danish television, especially in connection with Julehilsen til Grønland , a Christmas greetings programme.
Niviaq Korneliussen is a Greenlandic author writing in Greenlandic and Danish. Her 2014 debut novel, HOMO sapienne was written and published in Greenlandic, as well as in a Danish translation by the author.
Greenland is one of the 12 multi-member constituencies of the Folketing, the national legislature of the Kingdom of Denmark. The constituency was established in 1975 following the merger of the two constituencies that covered Greenland. The constituency currently elects two of the 179 members of the Folketing using the open party-list proportional representation electoral system. At the 2022 general election it had 41,305 registered electors.
Kîstat Lund was an Greenlandic graphic artist, illustrator, painter and schoolteacher. Educated at GU Nuuk High School and Viborg Katedralskole, she began drawing and painting while she was in high school and she worked with the techniques of painting in airbrush, acrylic, graphics, oil, paper cuts, pastel paintings, reliefs, tapestry weave templates and watercolour. Lund created art that was commissioned by conference rooms, institutions and schools. She was also a teacher at Narsap Atuarfia in Narsaq from 1975 after training as a teacher. Lund received scholarships and awards for her work and she was appointed Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog in 1997.
Bolatta Silis-Høegh is a Greenlandic contemporary artist and children's book author and illustrator who lives in Denmark.
Arnannguaq Høegh was a Greenlandic visual artist whose art was inspired by the country's symbols and nature. Remembered in particular for her graphic works, she was also active in sculpture and in abstract painting. From 1991, she ran the college of art (Kunstskolen) in Nuuk where she exerted significant influence over new generations of Greenlandic artists.
Dorthea (Dorthe) Rebekka Augusta Kristoffersen née Jakobsen was a Greenlandic artist from the country's west coast. A talented craftswoman who had previously embroidered skins and created dolls, after her marriage with Kristoffer Kristoffersen (1902–1970), she concentrated on creating small mythological figures in local soapstone. Her works have been exhibited in Denmark and can be seen in the Greenland National Museum in Nuuk.
Iben Mondrup née Mortensen is a Danish novelist who spent her childhood in Greenland. A graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, she turned to writing in 2009. publishing eight novels by 2023. Like many of her works which draw on her experience of life in Greenland and deal with family conflicts, Godhavn won the DR Romanprisen in 2015. Her subsequent novels have also been best sellers. Now divorced, Mondrup has two children and lives in Copenhagen.
