The cinema of Japan, also known domestically as hōga, has a history that spans more than 100 years. Japan has one of the oldest and largest film industries in the world; as of 2021, it was the fourth largest by number of feature films produced. In 2011, Japan produced 411 feature films that earned 54.9% of a box office total of US$2.338 billion. Films have been produced in Japan since 1897.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Agency for Cultural Affairs</span> Special body of the Japanese Ministry of Education

The Agency for Cultural Affairs is a special body of the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). It was set up in 1968 to promote Japanese arts and culture.

Shōshimin-eiga, literally "petty bourgeois film" or "lower middle class film", is a genre of Japanese realist films which focus on the everyday lives of ordinary or middle class people. An alternate term for the shōshimin-eiga is the pseudo-Japanese word shomin-geki, literally "common people drama", which had been invented by Western film scholars. The term shōshimin-eiga as a definition of a specifically Japanese film genre presumably first appeared in 1932 in articles by critics Yoshio Ikeda and Ichiro Ueno.

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, also known as MOMAT, is the foremost museum collecting and exhibiting modern Japanese art. The museum, in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan, is known for its collection of 20th-century art and includes Western-style and Nihonga artists. It has a branch, the National Crafts Museum, in the city of Kanazawa.

Shigehiko Hasumi is a Japanese literary critic, film critic, French literature scholar, and novelist. He was a professor at the University of Tokyo, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and the 26th President (1997-2001).

Isuzu Yamada was a Japanese stage and screen actress whose career spanned seven decades.

Yaji and Kita: The Battle of Toba Fushimi is a 1928 Japanese film directed by Tomiyasu Ikeda. This comedy film showcases the acting talent of Denjirō Ōkōchi and acts as a complementary film to Yaji and Kita: Yasuda's Rescue, which is part of the Yaji and Kita series.

<i>Blue Film: Estimation</i> 1968 Japanese film

Blue Film: Estimation is a 1968 Japanese pink film directed by Kan Mukai. It is in the Part color-format which was common with Pink films in the late 1960s and early 1970s before Nikkatsu's entry into the genre with their Roman Porno films.

Million Film (ミリオンフィルム) was one of the early independent studios which produced pink films. Along with OP Eiga, Shintōhō Eiga, Kantō and Kōji Wakamatsu's production studio, Million Film was one of the most influential on the genre during its first decade. Many of the most prominent directors and performers in the pink film genre worked for Million Film.

<i>Momijigari</i> (film) 1899 Japanese film

Momijigari is a Japanese film shot in 1899 by Shibata Tsunekichi. It is a record of the kabuki actors Onoe Kikugorō V and Ichikawa Danjūrō IX performing a scene from the kabuki play Momijigari. It is the oldest extant Japanese film and the first film to be designated an Important Cultural Property.

<i>Fallen Blossoms</i> 1938 Japanese film

Fallen Blossoms, also titled Flowers Have Fallen and The Blossoms Have Fallen, is a 1938 Japanese drama film directed by Tamizō Ishida, based on a play by Kaoru Morimoto.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">National Film Archive of Japan</span>

The National Film Archive of Japan is an independent administrative institution and one of Japan's seven national museums of art which specializes in preserving and exhibiting the film heritage of Japan. In its previous incarnation, it was the National Film Center, which was part of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. In April 2018, it became independent of the National Museum of Modern Art and was officially elevated to the rank of a national museum.
