<span class="mw-page-title-main">United States District Court for the Northern District of California</span> U.S. federal district court in California

The United States District Court for the Northern District of California is the federal United States district court whose jurisdiction comprises the following counties of California: Alameda, Contra Costa, Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Monterey, Napa, San Benito, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Sonoma. The court hears cases in its courtrooms in Eureka, Oakland, San Francisco, and San Jose. It is headquartered in San Francisco.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">California Courts of Appeal</span> Intermediate appellate courts of California

The California Courts of Appeal are the state intermediate appellate courts in the U.S. state of California. The state is geographically divided along county lines into six appellate districts. The Courts of Appeal form the largest state-level intermediate appellate court system in the United States, with 106 justices.

Harold Joseph Haley was an American judge. He was a Superior Court judge in Marin County, California. He was taken hostage in his courtroom, along with several others, during the course of a trial, and was killed during the attempted escape of his captors with their hostages.

Jackson Temple was an associate justice of the Supreme Court of California. He served three separate terms on the court between 1870 and 1902.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Martin Jenkins</span> American judge

Martin Joseph Jenkins is an American attorney and jurist serving as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of California. He was previously a justice of the California Court of Appeal for the First District, located in San Francisco, and a former United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.

Districts in California geographically divide the U.S. state into overlapping regions for political and administrative purposes.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">California superior courts</span> State trial courts with general jurisdiction

Superior courts in California are the state trial courts with general jurisdiction to hear and decide any civil or criminal action which is not specially designated to be heard in some other court or before a governmental agency. As mandated by the California Constitution, there is a superior court in each of the 58 counties in California. The superior courts also have appellate divisions which hear appeals from decisions in cases previously heard by inferior courts.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Los Angeles County Superior Court</span> US, California superior court with jurisdiction over Los Angeles County

The Superior Court of Los Angeles County is the California Superior Court located in Los Angeles County. It is the largest single unified trial court in the United States.

The Alameda County Superior Court, officially the Superior Court of California, County of Alameda, is the California superior court with jurisdiction over Alameda County as established by Article VI of the Constitution of California. It functions as the trial court for both criminal and civil cases filed in Alameda County.

Council Julian Goodell, also called Julian Goodell, was an American attorney and jurist who served as an associate justice of the District Court of Appeal of California from 1945 to 1953.

Richard Maury Sims Jr. was an American judge who was Associate Justice of the California First District Court of Appeal, Division One from 1940 to 1978 and the District Attorney of Marin County from 1950 to 1953.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Judiciary of California</span>

The Judiciary of California or the Judicial Branch of California is defined under the California Constitution as holding the judicial power of the state of California which is vested in the Supreme Court, the Courts of Appeal and the Superior Courts. The judiciary has a hierarchical structure with the California Supreme Court at the top, California Courts of Appeal as the primary appellate courts, and the California Superior Courts as the primary trial courts.

Emmett Seawell was an associate justice of the Supreme Court of California from January 8, 1923, to July 7, 1939.

Frederick William Henshaw was an American attorney and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of California from December 29, 1894, to January 1, 1918, whose 23-year tenure is among the longest on the high court.

Henry Alexander Melvin was an associate justice of the Supreme Court of California from September 28, 1908 to December 1920.
