The initial six main characters were chosen by the producers, from a list of potential candidates of 50 to 60 DC Comics teenage superheroes. [1] The criteria consisted of age, powers, personality, cultural icon status, and dynamics. [2] An additional regular, Zatanna, was introduced partway through the first season, and Rocket was added at the end of the first season. [1]
The following members were added to the team after the series premiere at different times:
The Outsiders are a group of teen superheroes that work as part of the Team, but in the limelight.
The Sentinels of Magic is a school of magic-based superheroes tutored by Zatanna who later become Nabu's hosts.
The Justice League is the superhero team that protects the Earth from various threats.
The Light are a secret society created by Vandal Savage in an attempt to improve humanity. [32] [33] They view the superheroes as interfering with the natural order of things and that Earth must employ survival of the fittest if it intends to exist and thrive in an ever-changing universe.

Brainiac is a supervillain appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino, and debuted in Action Comics #242. He has since endured as one of Superman's greatest enemies. The character's name is a portmanteau of the words brain and maniac.
Geo-Force is a fictional superhero character appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Markov is the younger Prince Twin of Markovia and the elder brother of Terra. Young Justice is a fictional DC Comics superhero team consisting of teenaged heroes. The team was formed in 1998 when DC's usual teen hero group, the Teen Titans, had become adults and changed their name to the Titans. Like the original Teen Titans, Young Justice was centered on three previously established teen heroes: Superboy, Robin, and Impulse, but grew to encompass most teenaged heroes in the DC Universe.
JLA: The Nail is a three-issue comic book mini-series published by DC Comics in 1998 under its Elseworlds imprint. The story, written and drawn by Alan Davis, is set in a parallel universe where Jonathan and Martha Kent's truck experiences a flat tire caused by a nail, which stops them from discovering a Kryptonian spaceship outside Smallville containing the baby Kal-El, negating Superman. It was later followed by a sequel, JLA: Another Nail, a three-issue mini-series published in 2004 which wrapped up several loose ends from the original mini-series, such as the war between the New Gods and the Green Lantern Corps and Oliver Queen's public betrayal of the Justice League.
Superman of Earth-Two (Kal-L) is an alternate version of the fictional superhero Superman, who appears in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was introduced after DC Comics created Earth-Two, a parallel world that was retroactively established as the home of characters whose adventures had been published in the Golden Age of comic books. This allowed creators to publish Superman comic books taking place in current continuity while being able to disregard Golden Age stories, solving an incongruity, as Superman had been published as a single ongoing incarnation since inception. This version of the character first appeared in Justice League of America #73.
The Emerald Empress is the name of several, fictional super-villains appearing American comic books published by DC Comics, primarily as enemies of the Legion of Super-Heroes. The first incarnation of the character appeared in Adventure Comics #352.

Charles McNider is a fictional superhero in DC Comics. The character appeared for the first time in All-American Comics #25.
Young Justice is an American superhero animated television series developed by Brandon Vietti and Greg Weisman for Cartoon Network and distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television. The show, instead of a direct adaptation of Peter David, Todd Dezago and Todd Nauck's Young Justice comic series, is an original story set in the DC Universe with a focus on teenage and young adult superheroes.
Beast Boy is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. He has also gone under the alias Changeling.
