The Dirty Picture is a 2011 Indian biographical drama film directed by Milan Luthria and produced by Shobha and Ekta Kapoor. [1] Inspired by the lives of such actresses as Silk Smitha and Disco Shanti, the film narrates the rise and fall of a dancing girl in Tamil cinema. [2] The Dirty Picture features Vidya Balan in the lead role, and co-stars Emraan Hashmi, Tusshar Kapoor and Naseeruddin Shah. Rajat Arora wrote the screenplay, dialogues and lyrics for the film and Vishal–Shekhar composed the music. [1]

Made on a budget between ₹170 million (US$2.0 million) and ₹180 million (US$2.2 million), [3] The Dirty Picture was released worldwide on 2 December 2011, and earned ₹1.14 billion (US$14 million). [3] [4] The film garnered awards and nominations in several categories, with particular praise for Vidya's performance, the dialogues, and the costume design by Niharika Khan. As of 2012, the film has won 51 awards.

The Dirty Picture won three National Film Awards, including Best Actress (Vidya) and Best Costume Design (Khan). [5] At the 57th Filmfare Awards ceremony, the film won three awards, including Best Actress and Best Costume Design. It also received nominations for Best Film and Best Director (Luthria) at the ceremony. The film also won six Screen Awards, more than any film that year, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress. [6] Among other wins, the film received two Apsara Awards, and five awards each from the Zee Cine and International Indian Film Academy Awards ceremonies, all of which included Best Actress awards for Vidya.

The Dirty Picture is a 2011 Indian Hindi-language biographical musical drama film inspired by the life of Silk Smitha, an Indian actress noted for her erotic roles. The filmmakers have clarified that the story is not officially or literally based on Smitha alone, but on many of her contemporaries such as Disco Shanti. It also resembles the personal lives of other women in popular culture, including actress and sex symbol Marilyn Monroe. Vidya Balan is an Indian actress known for her work in Hindi films. She made her acting debut in 1995 with the sitcom Hum Paanch, following which she made several unsuccessful attempts at a film career. Vidya then appeared in music videos for Euphoria, Pankaj Udhas, and Shubha Mudgal all directed by Pradeep Sarkar. She had her first film release with a leading role in Goutam Halder's Bengali film Bhalo Theko (2003). In 2005, she played the heroine in Sarkar's Parineeta, an adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel of the same name. Vidya won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut for the film. Rajkumar Hirani's Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), a successful comedy sequel, saw her play a radio jockey opposite Sanjay Dutt.

Starring Vidya Balan, Emraan Hashmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Tusshar Kapoor, the film's soundtrack featured six songs composed by Vishal–Shekhar and lyrics written by Rajat Arora. The soundtrack was released on 4 November 2011 and was commercially successful, with the song "Ooh La La" becoming chartbuster.
