It includes land on both banks of the Elbe, but the centre and most of the town lies to the south of the river. The Königstein Fortress is situated above and to the south-west of the town.

Karl Hermann Christian Jordan was a German entomologist and gymnast who competed in the 1912 Summer Olympics. He was born in Papstdorf, Saxony. In 1912 he was a member of the German team which finished fourth in the team, free system competition and fifth in the team, European system event. Jordan was also a professor of zoology, with six species of heteroptera named after him.

The Saxon Elbeland is a term used in more recent times which describes a region along the Elbe, whose boundaries are not clearly defined, but which extends roughly from the Elbe Sandstone Mountains to Torgau. The best-known cities and town in this area are Dresden, Meißen, Riesa and Torgau. The term is largely synonymous with the region along the river known as the Upper Elbe (Oberelbe), i.e. the German section of the Elbe River nearest its source region.

Ort der Vielfalt is an initiative launched in 2007 by the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Government Commissioner for Migration, Refugees and Integration with the aim of strengthening the commitment of communities, towns and districts in Germany to cultural diversity. The Saxon Renaissance is a regional type of architecture from the Renaissance particularly in the area of the Electorate of Saxony on the middle Elbe. Influences that formed the style came primarily from Bohemia, Italy and Poland. There were Italian artist families involved by wandering around and roaming the Saxon cultural area in search of commissions. Thus ensured a mixture of styles as well as the own Saxon style development.
