Mauritius, officially known as the Republic of Mauritius, is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean, approximately 2,000 kilometres off the south-eastern coast of East Africa, to the east of Madagascar. The country comprises the main island of Mauritius, along with Rodrigues, Agaléga, and St. Brandon. Together with nearby Réunion, a French overseas department, these islands form part of the Mascarene Archipelago.

The University of Technology, Mauritius (UTM) is a public research university in Mauritius. The main campus lies in La Tour Koenig, Pointe-aux-Sables, within the district of Port-Louis. It was founded following the government of Mauritius approval of the setting up of the University of Technology, Mauritius in January 2000 and the proclamation of The University of Technology, Mauritius Act on 21 June 2000.

According to the 2022 census, the proportion of people with higher education has increased to 8.8%. Mauritius was ranked 57th in the Global Innovation Index in 2023, 1st in Africa.
The University of Mauritius (UoM) is the national university of Mauritius. It is the oldest and largest university in the country in terms of student enrollment and the curriculum offered. The public university's main campus is located at Réduit, Moka.
