Upon marrying Charles, Prince of Wales, she was commonly styled "Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall". In Scotland she was known as "Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Rothesay". [1] Although Camilla was legally Princess of Wales, she adopted the feminine form of her husband's highest-ranking subsidiary title, Duke of Cornwall, because the title "Princess of Wales" had become strongly associated with Charles's first wife, Diana. [4] [5] In 2021, upon the death of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Charles inherited his father's titles, [6] and Camilla thus became Duchess of Edinburgh, Countess of Merioneth and Baroness Greenwich. [7]
When Charles succeeded his mother, Elizabeth II, Camilla automatically became queen in accordance with English common law. [8] [9] [10] Clarence House had however stated on the occasion of their wedding in 2005 that she would adopt the style of a princess consort instead of queen consort, [11] but there is no legal or historical precedent for such a title. [12] In 2022 Accession Day message, published to mark the 70th anniversary reign of Elizabeth II, she stated that it was her "sincere wish" for Camilla to be known as queen consort upon Charles's accession to the throne. [13]
Prior to her coronation, Camilla was styled "Her Majesty The Queen Consort", which distinguished her from the recently deceased Queen Elizabeth II. [14] [15] Since the coronation, Camilla has been styled "Her Majesty The Queen", consistent with past queens consort. [16] [17] [18] In conversation, the correct etiquette is to address her initially as Your Majesty and thereafter as Ma'am (pronounced /mæm/ , with a short 'a' as in jam). [19]

The use of the title of Princess of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is entirely at the will of the sovereign, and is now expressed in letters patent. Individuals holding the title of princess are styled "Her Royal Highness" (HRH). The current letters patent were issued in 1917 during the First World War, with one extension in 2012.
Duchess of Cornwall is a title held by the wife of the heir apparent to the British throne. The Duchess of Cornwall is usually also the Princess of Wales, and goes by that title. The current title-holder is Catherine, whose husband, Prince William, became the Duke of Cornwall on 8 September 2022, upon the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Before her, Catherine's stepmother-in-law, Queen Camilla, publicly used the title Duchess of Cornwall when she married.

When she married Prince Charles, "Camilla was not popular or well liked, [though] this has changed a lot since the marriage as Camilla has taken on a lot of patronages and Charles is a lot happier," [Marlene] Koenig says. "Still, [there was] a lot of tension and anger among a certain element of the population—so it was decided that Camilla would be styled as the Duchess of Cornwall, even though, of course, she is the Princess of Wales."
