The 25th MOBO Awards were held on 30 November 2022 at the Wembley Arena in London, to recognize achievements in "music of black origin" during 2022. [1] The ceremony was hosted by internet personalities Chunkz and Yung Filly, and was live-streamed through YouTube. [2]

Contents

The nominees were announced on 11 November 2022, introducing two new categories, Best Alternative Music Act and Best Electronic/Dance Act. [3] For the first time, the Album of the Year award was given to two artists, Little Simz and Knucks. [4] British music entrepreneur Jamal Edwards received the Paving the Way Award as a posthumous honour to recognize his contributions in helping various artists to launch their careers. [5]

Summer Marjani Walker is an American R&B singer-songwriter. Born and raised in Atlanta, she signed with the local record label Love Renaissance, an imprint of Interscope Records in late 2017. The following year, she released her debut commercial mixtape Last Day of Summer (2018), supported by its lead single, "Girls Need Love." The song became her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 and spawned a remix featuring Canadian rapper Drake. Sault are a British music collective that make a mixture of R&B, urban contemporary gospel, house and disco. The project is helmed by songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Inflo, and includes vocalists Cleo Sol, Kid Sister, and Chronixx. Jack Peñate has also collaborated with the collective. The group frequently puts Black-centric issues at the foreground.

Oakley Neil Caesar-Su, known professionally as Central Cee, is a British rapper and songwriter from Shepherd's Bush, London. He rose to prominence in 2020 with the release of the singles "Day in the Life" and "Loading". His first mixtape Wild West was released on 12 March 2021, which debuted at number two on the UK Albums Chart. His second mixtape 23 was released on 25 February 2022 and debuted atop the UK Albums Chart.

Sometimes I Might Be Introvert is the fourth studio album by English rapper Little Simz, released on 3 September 2021 by Age 101 Music and AWAL. The album succeeds the Mercury Prize-nominated album Grey Area, released in 2019, and the five-track EP, Drop 6 (2020). It is supported by five singles: "Introvert", "Woman", "Rollin Stone", "I Love You, I Hate You" and "Point and Kill". The album is produced by frequent collaborator Inflo, and includes guest appearances from Cleo Sol and Obongjayar.

"Just for Me" is a song by English singer PinkPantheress. It was produced by Mura Masa and released on 13 August 2021 through Parlophone and Elektra as the fourth single from her debut mixtape To Hell with It. Prior to being released, a snippet of the song posted to TikTok by PinkPantheress went viral on the platform. The bedroom pop, 2-step garage, and alternative pop song is a spiritual successor to PinkPantheress's song "Pain", and is written about her unhealthy obsession with a crush.

Reason to Smile is the debut studio album by British rapper Kojey Radical, released 4 March 2022 by Asylum Records and Atlantic Records. It was shortlisted for the 2022 Mercury Prize and nominated for Album of the Year at the 2022 MOBO Awards.

MOBO Awards 2021 ceremony was held at the Coventry Building Society Arena in Coventry on 5 December 2021. The ceremony streamed live on YouTube and the highlights of the ceremony were shown on BBC One three days later.

Dehaney Nia Lishahn Hunt, known professionally as Nia Archives, is an English record producer, DJ, singer and songwriter. Born in Bradford in West Yorkshire, she moved to Leeds aged seven, out of the family home aged sixteen, and then to Greater Manchester, during which time she was inspired by jungle documentaries and their women participants. After finding herself messed about by local producers, she began producing her own jungle and drum and bass works; after moving to Hackney Wick for university and finding that no record labels would release them, she released them herself, attracting attention for the EPs Headz Gone West and Forbidden Feelingz. After featuring on numerous 'best of' lists, she released a third EP, Sunrise Bang Ur Head Against the Wall, in 2023, which topped the UK Dance Albums Chart, followed by an album, Silence Is Loud, which peaked at No. 16 on the UK Albums Chart. Hunt is generally regarded as being at the forefront of the post-2020 drum and bass revival, and has been cited as an inspiration by Piri.

After a fallow year in 2023, due to the organisers moving the ceremony to coincide with the early-year awards season that features the Grammys and the Brit Awards, the 26th MOBO Awards were held on 7 February 2024 at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield. The 26th annual awards recognised achievements in "Music Of Black Origin" during 1 September 2022 to 31 August 2023. The ceremony was hosted by former Love Island star Indiyah Polack and actor Babatunde Aléshé. It was live-streamed through YouTube, with highlights shown by the BBC two days later.
