The Maryland Comptroller election of 2014 was held on November 4, 2014, to elect the Comptroller of Maryland. Incumbent Democratic Comptroller Peter Franchot ran for re-election to a third term in office.

Comptroller of Maryland financial officer

The Comptroller of the State of Maryland is Maryland's chief financial officer, elected by the people to a four-year term. The Comptroller is not term-limited. The Office was established by the second Maryland Constitution of 1851 due to concern about the potential for fraud and corruption in the administration of the Public Treasury. The constitutional duties of the Office begin with the broad mandate to exercise "general superintendence of the fiscal affairs of the State", which includes collecting taxes and maintaining the general ledger. The Comptroller countersigns all checks drawn by the State Treasurer upon the deposits of the State. The Comptroller also prescribes the formalities for transfer of other evidence of State debt and countersigns such papers.

Primary elections were held on June 24, 2014. Franchot was re-nominated by the Democrats and the Republicans nominated former Amtrak CFO William Henry Campbell.

Shortly after being re-elected in 2010, incumbent Comptroller Peter Franchot began considering running for Governor of Maryland in 2014. [1] [2] [3] [4] Six potential candidates for the position of Comptroller emerged during this time: State House of Delegates Majority Leader Kumar P. Barve, State Delegate Jon Cardin, State Delegate Galen R. Clagett, former Montgomery County Executive Doug Duncan, State Delegate Brian Feldman and State Senator James Rosapepe, with Barve and Rosapepe saying they would definitely run if Franchot did not. [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] In December 2012, Franchot announced that he would not be running for governor. [10] Barve and Rosapepe subsequently ended their campaigns and Cardin, Claggett and Duncan decided to run for other offices. In September 2013, Franchot officially declared that he was running for a third term. [11] Feldman did not rule out challenging him but ultimately declined to do so. [12]

Kumar P. Barve American politician

Kumar P. Barve (born September 8, 1958 in Schenectady, New York is an American politician. He is a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, representing District 17 in Montgomery County, which includes the cities of Rockville and Gaithersburg. He was the first Asian-American, of Indian descent, to be elected to a state legislature in the United States, and served from 2002 to 2015 as the Majority Leader of the House of Delegates. In 2015, he was appointed to chair the House Environment and Transportation Committee, which oversees transportion, the environment, agriculture, ethics, and housing and real property law. His legislative work has focused largely on protecting the environment, improving health care, and the promotion of the high-tech industry in Maryland. He sponsored both the 1995 Health Access Act that place limits on HMOs for the first time and legislation that created the Technology Development Corporation of Maryland. He unsuccessfully ran for Congress in 2016 in Maryland's 8th congressional district, losing the Democratic Primary to the eventual winner, State Senator Jamie Raskin.

The Maryland House of Delegates is the lower house of the legislature of the State of Maryland. It consists of 141 delegates elected from 47 districts. The House of Delegates Chamber is in the Maryland State House on State Circle in Annapolis, the state capital. The State House also houses the Maryland State Senate Chamber and the offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor of the State of Maryland. Each delegate has offices in Annapolis, in the nearby Casper R. Taylor Jr. House Office Building.

James Carew Rosapepe is an American politician from Maryland and a member of the Democratic Party. He is currently serving in his third four-year term in the Maryland State Senate, representing Maryland's District 21 in Prince George's and Anne Arundel Counties.

The city's population was 65,239 people at the 2010 United States Census, making it the second-largest incorporated city in Maryland, behind Baltimore. Frederick is home to Frederick Municipal Airport, which accommodates general aviation, and to the county's largest employer U.S. Army's Fort Detrick bioscience/communications research installation.

Incumbent Democratic State Comptroller William Donald Schaefer ran for a third term, but was defeated in the Democratic primary by Peter Franchot, a State Delegate from Montgomery County. On the Republican side, Anne McCarthy, the former dean of the University of Baltimore business school, won a crowded primary and faced off against Franchot. In the general election, Franchot defeated McCarthy and became the next Comptroller of Maryland.

The Maryland gubernatorial election of 2018 was held on November 6, 2018. The date included the election of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and all members of the Maryland General Assembly. Incumbent governor Larry Hogan and Lieutenant Governor Boyd Rutherford, both Republicans, were eligible to run for a second term in office and pursued a successful re-election against former NAACP CEO Ben Jealous and his running mate Susan Turnbull. Hogan and Rutherford became the first Republican gubernatorial ticket in Maryland to win reelection since 1954, and won the greatest ever number of votes for a gubernatorial candidate in Maryland.

The 2018 United States Senate election in Maryland took place on November 6, 2018, in order to elect a member of the United States Senate to represent the State of Maryland. It was held concurrently with other elections to the United States Senate, elections to the United States House of Representatives, and various state and local elections. Incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Ben Cardin was re-elected to a third term.

The Maryland Comptroller election of 2018 was held on November 6, 2018, to elect the Comptroller of Maryland. Incumbent Democratic Comptroller Peter Franchot filed for re-election on October 5, 2017, and was unopposed for the Democratic nomination. Anjali Reed Phukan became a candidate under the Republican Party on April 20, 2017, and was unopposed for the Republican nomination. Peter Franchot won re-election with 72.1% of the vote.
