Mawra Hussain (Urdu : ماورہ حسین; born 28 September 1992), known professionally as Mawra Hocane, is a Pakistani actress who primarily works in Urdu television. [1] She made her acting debut in 2011 with Khichari Salsa . [4] She made her Bollywood debut with the romantic tragedy, Sanam Teri Kasam (2016) and her Pakistani film debut in 2018 with the comedy drama Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2 . [5]

Hocane has received praise for her portrayals of Nadia in Ek Tamanna Lahasil Si (2012), Haya in Aahista Aahista (2014), Sammi in Sammi (2017), Anaya Aziz in Sabaat (2020),and Mehrbano in Qissa Meherbano Ka (2021). Early life and family

Hocane was born as Mawra Hussain on 28 September 1992 in Karachi, Sindh. [8] [9] Actress Urwa Hocane is her elder sister, while actor Farhan Saeed is her brother-in-law. [10]

Hocane changed the spelling of her family name from "Hussain" to "Hocane", in 7th-grade to give it a unique spelling. [4] She holds a degree in law from the University of London, which she finished after returning to school. [11] [2]

Career

Hocane performed as a theatre artist before working as a VJ at ARY Musik. [9] Hocane performed in the Pakistani television serial dramas Aahista Aahista , Ik Tamanna Lahasil Si, and Nikhar Gaye Gulab Sare . [12] In 2014, she portrayed the titular role of Bushra in ARY Digital's Mein Bushra as a determined and capable daughter of a strict father. Hocane termed the project among her favourites. [13]

Hocane made her Hindi film debut with the romantic tragedy Sanam Teri Kasam opposite Harshvardhan Rane. [14] [15] She portrayed a South Indian girl who works as a librarian. [16] Hindustan Times noted, "Mawra is a delight to watch as Saru. She slips into the demure character with ease and her get-up certainly adds to her persona." News18 mentioned her as "one of the most incredible performer." [17] [18]

In 2018, she made her Pakistani film debut with the romantic comedy Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2 opposite Fahad Mustafa. [19] [20] The film is the second-highest-grossing Pakistani film worldwide. Pakistan Today noted, "Mawra is a good addition to the film and she nailed her character of a spoilt, young heiress." [21]

From 2018 to 2019, she narrated and appeared in the period drama Aangan based on Khadija Mastoor's novel of the same name. Hocane portrayed a resilient girl who observes bitter experiences regarding men's love. [22] In 2019, she appeared as the juvenile and bubbly Sunehri in Daasi . [23] Her next role of a headstrong and ambitious university student in Sabaat earned her dual nominations of Best TV Actress at 20th Lux Style Awards. [24] In 2021, she played title role of a victim of domestic abuse and marital rape in Qissa Meherbano Ka . [25] Her first role in 2023 was of a determined philanthropist Zimal Riyasat in Neem . [26] She later appeared as an innocent teen Rishtina who discovers the world after spending twenty years of her life in a basement in Kashmiri's directed Nauroz . [27] Hocane had her first role in 2024 in the comedy Let's Try Mohabbat, where she portrayed a newlywed bride who changes the perspectives of her in-laws with her arrival. [28] She is currently appearing in Jafaa as a gynecologist Dr. Zara who is coping with her troubled marriage. [29]

Hocane has established herself as one of the leading Urdu television actress. In 2016, Hocane ranked 6th in "HIP Top 10" list for her "strong and vocal personality". [30] Hocane modelled in "Hum Bridal Couture Week" in 2018, for designer Nilofer Shahid. She was the show stopper for designer HSY creation. [5] She has also done various photoshoots for "Eid Collections" and for designers. [31] [32] She serves as an ambassador for a number of brands such as Glow & Lovely and Lay's. [33]

Hocane launched her clothing line named "UXM", in collaboration with her sister Urwa Hocane, in June 2019. [34] In 2022, she also launched her own YouTube channel named "M Live". [35]

Controversy

Hocane once tweeted about the Indian film Phantom , which was banned in Pakistan, prompting social media harassment. [36] [37]

Produced by Deepak Mukut, the film stars Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane in their Hindi film debut, with Anurag Sinha, Manish Chaudhari, Murli Sharma and Sudesh Berry. The film is a modern rendition of the legends of Shiva-Sati and the novel Love Story by Eric Segal.

<i>Udaari</i> Pakistani TV series or programme

Udaari is an Urdu and Punjabi language social Pakistani television series that was created and co-produced by Kashf Foundation and Momina Duraid for Hum TV. It focused on the social and economic marginalisation of citizens in Pakistani rural society alongside highlighting deeply rooted issues such as child sexual abuse, gender discrimination and violence against women. It was originally aired from 10 April 2016 to 4 September 2016. The show is written by Farhat Ishtiaq and directed by Mohammed Ehteshamuddin. The plot of Udaari centres on the families of two Punjabi villagers Sheedan and Sajida. Sheedan faces discrimination as she is in the performing arts and is looked down upon as belonging to the "Marasis" which is a derogatory term when referring to musicians. Whereas Sajda is a widow and a struggling single mother working as a maid for her daughter's upbringing, she decides to marry Imtiaz for her daughter's wellbeing. Story takes a turn when Sheedan's daughter Ameera accuses Imtiaz of sexually harassing her.

Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2, sometimes abbreviated as JPNA 2, is a 2018 Pakistani Urdu-language romantic comedy film, directed by Nadeem Baig and written by Vasay Chaudhry. It is a joint venture of Salman Iqbal Films, Humayun Saeed and Shahzad Nasib's Six Sigma Plus, and Jerjees Seja's ARY Films. It is sequel to the 2015 film Jawani Phir Nahi Ani, and the second installment in Jawani Phir Nahi Ani film series. <i>Sammi</i> (TV series) Television series

Sammi(in Punjabi سمی ) is a Pakistani television drama serial about social causes that airs on Hum TV from 28 January 2017. It is written by Noor ul Huda Shah and directed by Saife Hassan. Set in rural Rahim Yar Khan, the series centers social issues on the rural society revolving around the concept of Vanni and shows moral lessons against common issues such as gender discrimination. Depicting the Vanni concept, storyline revolves around the journey of Sammi, a young girl who was sold off by her family to the Chaudhry family where her brother had killed her fiancé. Simultaneously it revolves around reality based issues with different characters within the same plot. It was nominated for Best Drama Serial at the 6th Hum Awards.

<i>Aangan</i> (2018 TV series) Pakistani period drama series

Aangan is a Pakistani period drama series based on the award-winning eponymous novel by Khadija Mastoor and originally broadcast on Hum TV. Apart from the initial few episodes, the story set in British India, is narrated by Aaliya who is an ambitious girl and witnesses the stories of relations affected at the time of partition of the Indian Subcontinent, presenting the trials and tribulations as her own family was divided.

Qissa Meherbano Ka is a 2021 Pakistani television series premiered on 28 August 2021 on Hum TV. It is directed by Iqbal Hussain, written by Fakhra Jabeen and produced by Momina Duraid under MD Productions. The serial stars Mawra Hocane, Ahsan Khan, Zaviyar Nauman Ijaz and Mashal Khan as lead roles while Zaib Rehman, Syed Mohammad Ahmed, Ghazala Kaifee, Khushhal Khan and Areej Mohyudin in supporting roles.

Khushhal Khan is a Pakistani television actor and model. Khan is the recipient of the Hum Style Award. <i>Mein Bushra</i>

Mein Bushra is a Pakistani television series first broadcast on ARY Digital. It was written by Sanam Mehdi and directed by Bilal Qureshi and Ahmed Bhatti. It stars Mawra Hocane in the title role as one of the seven daughters of her father, who wants to prove to him that daughters are just as capable as sons. It also features Faysal Quraishi, Affan Waheed, Saba Hameed and Waseem Abbas in prominent roles. It aired from 11 September 2014 to 12 February 2015.

<i>Neem</i> (TV series) Pakistani television series

Neem is a Pakistani television series directed by Shahzad Kashmiri and produced by Momina Duraid under the banner of MD Productions. It stars Mawra Hocane, Syed Jibran, Arslan Naseer and Ameer Gilani. The series is set in Lahore, New York and Kashmir. It premiered on Hum TV on 5 June 2023. The plot revolves around a dedicated university graduatee Zimal who destines to work for children's education and also copes with her personal problems, a ruthless entitled son of a tribal leader Karamat Khan, and an unemployed lower class guy Ashhad who is in one-sided love with Zimal. It concluded on 6 November 2023 after 23 epsidoes.
