Maxonia is a genus of ferns in the fern family Dryopteridaceae, subfamily Polybotryoideae, in the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group classification of 2016 (PPG I). [2] The genus has a single species Maxonia apiifolia, native to Cuba and Jamaica. [1] It formerly occurred in Florida, but is now extinct there. [3]
The genus name of Maxonia is in honour of William Ralph Maxon (1877–1948), who was an American botanist and pteridologist. [4]
The genus was circumscribed by Carl Christensen in Smithsonian Misc. Collect. vol.6 (Issue 9) n page 3 in 1916.
Thelypteridaceae is a family of about 900 species of ferns in the order Polypodiales. In the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group classification of 2016, it is placed in the suborder Aspleniineae. Alternatively, the family may be submerged in a very broadly defined family Aspleniaceae as the subfamily Thelypteridoideae.

The common name soralpouch fern is used for Saccoloma.

Other sources sink Cyclosorus into a very broadly defined genus Thelypteris, or expand the genus to include other genera which PPG I keeps separate. Thus the online Flora of China suggests there are about 250 species compared to the two species suggested in PPG I.

In the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group classification of 2016, the genus is placed in the subfamily Lycopodioideae. Some sources do not recognize the genus, sinking it into Lycopodium. Pseudolycopodium densum is native to Australia, the North Island of New Zealand and New Caledonia. It is a spore-bearing vascular plant and grows up to a metre high. It is found in a wide variety of situations, often in high rainfall areas on sandy soils.
