Medan Independent School (MIS), formerly Medan International School (MIS), is an international school in Medan, Indonesia. It was founded in 1969.

Overview

The school occupies a 7-acre (28,000 m2) site approximately 10 km from the heart of Medan. The school's facilities include 23 classrooms, a laboratory, two drama rooms, music rooms, two computer labs, a gymnasium, a 50-metre outdoor swimming pool, and a football pitch. [1]

Medan is the capital and largest city of the Indonesian province of North Sumatra, as well as a regional hub and financial centre of Sumatra. Binjai, formally Kota Binjai, is an independent city in the North Sumatra province of Indonesia, bordered by Deli Serdang Regency to the east and Langkat Regency to the west. Binjai is connected to Medan, about 22 km to the east, by the Sumatra highway that goes to Banda Aceh, and effectively forms a part of Greater Medan. The city's population was 181,904 in the 1990 Census, 224,516 in the 2000 Census, 246,154 in the 2010 Census, and 279,302 in the 2020 Census, comprising 139,284 males and 140,018 females. In 2020, a further 47,018 inhabitants lived in Binjai District of Langkat Regency, outside the city limits but immediately north of the city.

Tjong A Fie, Majoor der Chinezen (1860–1921), or Tjong Yiauw Hian, birth name Zhang Hongnan, was a Hakka Chinese businessman, banker and kapitan who built a large plantation business in Sumatra, Indonesia. Tjong A Fie built his business that employed more than 10,000 labor workers. Because of his great success, he maintained a good relationship with the ruler of Deli, including the ninth Sultan of Deli, Sultan Ma'mun Al Rashid Perkasa Alamyah and Dutch authorities.

Tirto Adhi Soerjo was an Indonesian journalist known for his sharp criticism of the Dutch colonial government. Born to a noble Javanese family in Blora, Central Java, Tirto first studied to become a doctor but later focused on journalism. A freelancer since 1894, in 1902 he was made an editor of the Batavia based Pembrita Betawi. Tirto established his first newspaper in 1903 and, four years later, created Medan Prijaji as a medium for educated native Indonesians. This proved his longest-lived publication, lasting over five years before Tirto was exiled in 1912 to Bacan for his staunch anti-colonial criticism.

Major General Marah Halim Harahap was an Indonesian general, politician, and governor. He was the Governor of North Sumatra from 1967 until 1978. Under his leadership, North Sumatra recovered from the 30 September Movement, and organized an association football tournament with his name which was internationally recognized by FIFA.
