Melissa Mojica Rosario (born December 29, 1983) is a Puerto Rican judoka. [2]

Early and personal life

She was born in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, [3] on December 29, 1983. She is 120.2 kilograms (265 lb). [1] Her parents are Carmelo Mojica and Julia Rosario, and she has two sisters: Melani and Julisa. [4] Mojica went to the Medardo Carazo High School and studied Biology at University of Turabo. [4]

Judo career

Mojica won the bronze medal in both, the open [5] and the over 78 kg division of the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games. [6] She won the gold medal in the 2008 Pan American Judo Championships in Miami. [7]

She won the gold medal in the over 78 kg and the open category, as well the silver in the team competition at the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games, held in her home country, Puerto Rico. [3]

At the 2011 Pan American Games she lost the final to the Cuban Idalys Ortiz to win the silver medal at the +78 kg category in the regional games held in Guadalajara, Mexico. [8]

Mojica won in May 2012, the silver medal at the Moscow Grand Slam, after being defeated by the Brazilian Maria Suelen Altheman who won her category gold medal. [9] At the 2012 Summer Olympics, she defeated the Saudi teenager Wojdan Shaherkani, who competed with a special hijab, in only 82 seconds. [10] After the combat Mojica claimed that she does not care about religious issues, but every woman should have the opportunity to compete at the Olympics. [11] She then lost to Russian Elena Ivashchenko by Ippon in the second round, ending her participation in the +78 kg category at London, United Kingdom. [12]

The Judo competition at the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games was held in Cartagena, Colombia. The tournament was scheduled to be held from 25 to 29 July at the Coliseo de Gimnasia y Deportes de Combate, Unidad Deportiva Pedro de Heredia in Cartagena. This was the first time that the regional games held the Kata division.

Mabel Fonseca Ramírez is a retired amateur Puerto Rican freestyle wrestler, who competed in the women's lightweight category. She produced a remarkable tally of four career medals; three of them were bronze from the Pan American Games and World Championships and a silver in the 59-kg division from the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games. Fonseca also had an opportunity to represent Puerto Rico at the 2004 Summer Olympics, but her participation had been marred by a disqualification for failing the doping test. Throughout her sporting career, Fonseca trained as a member of the women's wrestling team for Esporto San Juan under her personal coach Reinaldo Jimenez.

Jessica García is a Puerto Rican judoka who competed in the women's lightweight category. She picked up a total of twenty-one medals in her career, including a prestigious gold from the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayagüez, and represented her nation Puerto Rico at the 2004 Summer Olympics.

Ineabelle Díaz Santana is a Puerto Rican taekwondo practitioner, who competed in the women's welterweight category. She picked up a total of ten medals in her career, including two from the World Taekwondo Championships and a bronze from the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Puerto Rico competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the Games were postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the territory's nineteenth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics. Like on the 2016 Summer Olympics, Puerto Rico left the Olympics with a single gold medal, this time won by Jasmine Camacho-Quinn. Other athletes fell short of their Olympic medal, with Steven Piñeiro finishing sixth in the men's skateboarding street park final, and table tennis player Adriana Díaz losing a match in the third round.
