Metro FM is a nationwide FM radio network broadcasting from Istanbul.
It is one of the first privately founded radio stations in Turkey and the first foreign music station. Broadcasting Pop Music in other languages than Turkish, Metro FM can be listened to via terrestrial broadcast, Turksat 2A Satellite, BlackBerry and iPhone applications.
Founded by the private Uzan Group, Metro FM remained one of the media branches of the holding for over ten years. The station briefly stayed under government entity after the takeover of the Uzan Holding companies by government banking regulation agency TMSF. With the auction held in September 2005, Metro FM has been sold to the Canadian communication group Canwest for a sum of US$22,850,000. Failing its operations in Turkey as a result of the 2007 global recession, Canwest has sold Metro FM along with its sister stations Süper FM, Joy FM and Joy Türk to Spectrum Medya, one of the domestic investment fund Actera Group’s companies. The name of the company has been changed to Karnaval Media.
Since its foundation in 1992, Metro FM has always been among the first two foreign music radio stations in the country by terms of rating.[citation needed] The station manager and program/music director of the radio is Cengiz Ünsal.

The mass media in Turkey includes a wide variety of domestic and foreign periodicals expressing disparate views, and domestic newspapers are extremely competitive. However, media ownership is concentrated in the hands of a few large private media groups which are typically part of wider conglomerates controlled by wealthy individuals, which limits the views that are presented. In addition, the companies are willing to use their influence to support their owners' wider business interests, including by trying to maintain friendly relations with the government. The media exert a strong influence on public opinion. Censorship in Turkey is also an issue, and in the 2000s Turkey has seen many journalists arrested and writers prosecuted. On Reporters Without Borders' Press Freedom Index it has fallen from being ranked around 100 in 2005 to around 150 in 2013.

Media ownership in Canada is governed by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), with respect to audiovisual media and telecom networks, and other agencies with more specific jurisdiction, in the case of non-broadcast media—like the Competition Bureau, with respect to competition matters, and Department of Canadian Heritage regarding foreign investment in the cultural sector. The CRTC implements the policies of the Broadcasting Act and the Telecommunications Act within Canada but, because its jurisdiction is limited to these, does not regulate the ownership of newspapers or of non-audiovisual Internet activity. However, it has taken press and non-audiovisual Internet activity taken into consideration in deciding on broadcasting matters. Thus far, the CRTC has undertaken very little regulation of Internet-based audiovisual programming.

Uzan Group was a Turkish conglomerate owned by Cem Uzan. The group formerly owned Star TV, which it had founded as the first private broadcaster of the country, Metro FM, and the Star newspaper it launched in 1999. Other group companies included the Telsim mobile network and Imar Bank. In 2003 the Turkish government seized 219 group companies to cover $5.7 billion of debts arising from bank fraud at Imar.
