R v Gladue is a decision of the Supreme Court of Canada on the sentencing principles that are outlined under s. 718.2(e) of the Criminal Code. That provision,enacted by Parliament in 1995,directs the courts to take into consideration "all available sanctions,other than imprisonment" for all offenders. Paul S. Rouleau is a justice of the Court of Appeal for Ontario,Canada. He was the commissioner of the Public Order Emergency Commission that conducted the Inquiry into Emergencies Act mandated by law to study and report on the circumstances that led to the invoking of the Emergencies Act on February 14,2022 by the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during the Canada convoy protests.
Cynthia Petersen is a Canadian lawyer and judge. Petersen has been a judge for the Ontario Superior Court of Justice since June 2017. Before becoming a judge,Petersen was the Discrimination and Harassment Counsel for the Law Society of Upper Canada from 2002 to 2017. In 2011,Petersen was inducted into the Q Hall of Fame Canada.

Criminal sentencing in Canada is governed by the Canadian Criminal Code. The Criminal Code,along with the Supreme Court of Canada,have distinguished the treatment of Indigenous individuals within the Canadian Criminal Sentencing Regime.
R v Ipeelee is a Supreme Court of Canada decision which reaffirmed the court's previous holdings in R v Gladue,in that when sentencing an Indigenous person,every sentencing judge must consider:(a) the unique systemic or background factors which may have played a part in bringing the particular Indigenous individual before the courts;and (b) the types of sentencing procedures and sanctions which may be appropriate in the circumstances for the person before the court because of their particular Indigenous heritage or connection.
Mahmud Jamal is a Canadian jurist serving as a puisne justice of the Supreme Court of Canada since 2021. Jamal worked as a partner at Osler,Hoskin &Harcourt and taught law at McGill University and Osgoode Hall Law School before he was appointed to the Court of Appeal for Ontario in 2019. He was nominated to the Supreme Court on June 17,2021,taking office on July 1 to succeed Rosalie Abella. Jamal was born in Kenya to a family of Indian origin,making him the first person from a visible minority group to serve as a justice of the Supreme Court.

Justice O'Bonsawin holds a Bachelor of Arts from Laurentian University, a Bachelor of Law from the University of Ottawa, a Master of Law from Osgoode Hall Law School, and a Doctorate in Law from the University of Ottawa.
