Mississippi Highway 465 (MS 465) is a highway in the southern region of the Mississippi Delta. The highway starts at U.S. Route 61 (US 61) near Redwood. It travels westward towards the Mississippi River, and then northwards to the village of Eagle Bend. The highway then traverses on the Mississippi River levee on a one-lane road. Later, MS 465 leaves the levee, continues northward, and soon ends at MS 1.

The highway was built around 1956, as a gravel road from US 61 in Vicksburg, to MS 1 in Fitler. The southern terminus was moved in 1960 to near Redwood, and the highway was completely paved by 1984.

MS 465 is located in Warren and Issaquena counties. [1] The route is legally defined in Mississippi Code § 65-3-3, [3] and is maintained by the Mississippi Department of Transportation. The section from US 61 to the Warren–Issaquena county line was designated "William W. "Bill" Ramsey Memorial Highway" in 2009. [1]

The highway starts at a T-intersection with US 61, [4] a part of the Great River Road, [5] north of Redwood. It then travels southwestward, adjacent to the Yazoo River. [6] [4] MS 465 then intersects Old Twin Lake Road in the village of Twin Lake, [4] which is surrounded by a mix of forests and farmland. The road continues traveling southwestward, slightly elevated above the farmland. [6] It then travels over a bridge, and soon turns westward, east of the Warren–Issaquena county line. [4]

MS 465 continues to journey westward in Issaquena County, following the Yazoo River while surrounded by multiple smaller ponds. Next, the highway crosses over the Steele Bayou, and soon follows the Old Channel. The highway continues westward, crossing another bridge and passing nearby a cemetery. [7] MS 465 intersects Levee Road, [6] and then re-enters Warren County. [6] [7]

Once re-entering Warren County, MS 465 intersects Paw Paw Road and turns northward. The forest soon changes into farmland as the road nears Eagle Bend. [6] MS 465 then intersects Eagle Lake Shore Road near Eagle Lake, and it begins traveling around the eastern shore of the lake. The highway intersects minor streets around the village and crosses the Muddy Brook toward the center of the village. It then travels northwestward to Brunswick, [4] where the road begins to narrow. MS 465 soon crosses a cattle guard and turns northeastward toward the levee. Once on the levee, MS 465 travels a one-lane road for 11 miles (18 km). [6] Near Bellevue, the road intersects Laney Camp Road and re-enters Issaquena County [4] after crossing another cattle guard. [6]

In Issaquena County, the route continues traveling northeastward over the levee. Past Jackson Road, the highway shifts slightly to the east. MS 465 then travels around Albemarle Lake, intersecting Goose Lake Road. About four miles (6.4 km) later, the route turns northeastward, no longer concurrent with the levee. [7] The road crosses a cattle guard and becomes a two-lane road again. The highway becomes surrounded by forests until it intersects Mannie Road, where it begins traveling northward into farmland. [6] Past the village of New Fitler, the road turns northward, adjacent to the Steele Bayou. MS 465 continues northward to its northern terminus, MS 1, [7] another section of the Great River Road, [5] at a T-intersection. [7]

History

MS 465 first appeared as a gravel road on the state map in 1956, connecting US 61 near Vicksburg to MS 1 in Fitler. [8] [9] A year later, a section of the highway became paved in northwest Warren County, [9] [10] and its southern terminus was realigned to north of Vicksburg by 1958. [10] [11] The terminus continued to shift north to parallel the Yazoo River the next two years, ending near Redwood. [11] [12] The southern half of the route was fully paved by 1964, [13] [14] and the northern by 1984. [15] [16] The route has not changed significantly since. [16] [17] The route was proposed to be part of the Great River Road, [18] but it was not included in the most recent reiteration of the route. [5]

The highway has been prone to flooding, due to it being in the Mississippi River's vicinity. [19] The floods have impacted the Eagle Bend area, one of the communities on MS 465. [20] In May 2011, the highway was closed in preparation for floods, which were already impacting the region. [21] It re-opened in June, after repairs and cleanups were done to the road. [22] MS 465 was closed again in early January 2016, as waters approached flood levels again. [19] [23] People were told to evacuate Eagle Lake via the northern section of MS 465. [19] After waters receded by the end of January, the highway was re-opened to the public. [24]

Mississippi Highway 365 is a state highway in northeastern Mississippi. The route starts at MS 30 in Burton and travels northward. It travels into Burnsville and intersects U.S. Route 72. MS 365 continues northeastward and ends at MS 25 west of Pickwick Lake. The route was designated by 1950, connecting from MS 30 to MS 364. Mississippi Highway 555 is a state highway in southwestern Mississippi. The route has two sections, both in Adams County. The first section starts at Ogden Road and travels northwestward to its terminus at US 61. The second section starts at the concurrency of MS 930 and MS 932 and the concurrency of US 61 and US 84 in Natchez. MS 555 travels northward through Pine Ridge and ends at Anna's Bottom Road near the Anna Site. The route travels by a few historical locations, including the Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church.

Mississippi Highway 1 is a state highway in Mississippi that runs south from U.S. Highway 49 near Lula to U.S. Highway 61 south of Cary, roughly paralleling the Mississippi River. Mississippi Highway 37 is a state highway in central Mississippi. The route starts at U.S. Route 84 near Collins. It intersects MS 48 southwest of Liberty, and MS 569 becomes concurrent with it. Inside Liberty, MS 569 is also concurrent with MS 24 briefly before travelling northeastward out of the city. It continues through Amite County and it ends at U.S. Route 98 in extreme southwestern Lincoln County.

Mississippi Highway 367 is a short state highway located in northeastern Mississippi. The route starts at MS 356 near Jacinto and travels northeastward. MS 367 intersects several county roads before ending at the Alcorn–Tishomingo county line. The route was designated around 1965, from a former routing of MS 356. The highway was paved by 1974, and the section in Tishomingo County was decommissioned by 1998.

Mississippi Highway 438 is a state highway in western Mississippi. The route starts at MS 1 in Wayside and travels eastward. The road travels through farmland and intersects U.S. Route 61 and its old alignment near Arcola. MS 438 continues eastward and ends at Sunflower River Road and Kinlock Road on the Washington–Sunflower county line near Kinlock. The route was constructed around 1950, connecting from MS 1 to US 61. The route was extended to the Washington–Sunflower county line by 1958, and to US 49W in Inverness by 1960. The section east of the county line was removed from the route by 1974.

Mississippi Highway 436 is a state highway in western Mississippi. The route starts at Eastside Lake Washington Road in Glen Allan and travels eastward. The road intersects MS 1 in Hampton and turns northeastward. It ends near Percy at U.S. Route 61. MS 436 was designated in 1957, along a road from US 61 to a point near the Washington–Sharkey county line. The route was extended westward to Glen Allan along a state-maintained road in 1958, and also eastward to Belzoni via a county road in 1967. The route east of US 61 was decommissioned by 1967.

Mississippi Highway 556 is a state highway in southwestern Mississippi. The route starts at MS 184 in the town of Meadville and travels southeastwards. MS 556 crosses over the concurrency of U.S. Route 84 and US 98 inside the Homochitto National Forest, and the route ends at US 98 south of Bude. The route was designated around 1953, after a gravel road from US 84 to US 98, which had existed since 1928, was paved.

Mississippi Highway 403 is a state highway in central Mississippi. The route starts at U.S. Route 82 and MS 15 in Mathiston, and it travels north away from the town. It then turns east near Natchez Trace Parkway and then travels below it. MS 403 ends at the intersection of Clarkson Road and Old US 82 near a county highway maintenance barn. The route was designated by 1960, after a paved road extending from Mathiston was constructed around 1958. An extension northwards to MS 50 and MS 341 existed from 1960 to 1967.

Mississippi Highway 335 was a state highway in central Mississippi. The route started at MS 8 near Gore Springs, and it traveled northward over eastern Grenada County. MS 335 then crossed over the Grenada Lake and entered Yalobusha County. The route continued northward and ended at MS 330 near Gums. MS 335 was designated around 1958, from the Grenada–Yalobusha county line to MS 330. It was extended southwards in 1960 to MS 8, before being removed from the state highway system by 1967.
