The Murray Mallee is a grain-growing and sheep-farming area in the east of the Australian state of South Australia. The name is not formally designated but is widely used to refer to an area of approximately 20,000 square kilometres (7700 square miles) bounded by the River Murray [note 1] on its northern and western sides, the Victorian border on its eastern side, and up to about 50 kilometres (30 miles) south of the Mallee Highway.

The Murray Mallee area is predominantly a vast plain of low elevation, with sandhills and gentle undulating sandy rises, interspersed by flats. The annual rainfall ranges from approximately 250 millimetres (9.8 inches) in the north to 400 millimetres (16 inches) further south. The area was very lightly populated, with marginal pastoral runs of sheep at low stocking rates, until the beginning of the 20th century.[ citation needed ] Artesian water was discovered at moderate depth, and 707 kilometres (439 miles) of railways were opened, mainly in the 1910s, to make shipping of grain economically feasible. [3]

The first railway was the Pinnaroo line in 1906 from Tailem Bend on the main Melbourne–Adelaide railway. The success of this line led to construction in 1913 of the Barmera railway line, curtailed at that stage on the south bank of the Murray at Paringa. Before that line had been completed, the government approved a number of lines from it. These included the Peebinga railway line into the land between the new line and the Pinnaroo line, and lines to Loxton and Waikerie. [4] Finally, the Yinkanie railway line, opened in 1925. [5] All lines have now closed due to the declining use of railways for grain transport in the area.

Towns

The main towns in the Murray Mallee are Karoonda, Lameroo and Pinnaroo. Towns along the River Murray are generally considered to be in the Riverland or Murraylands, rather than the Mallee.

Ecology

Originally the Murray Mallee was covered in thick mallee scrub. Large expanses – estimates are about 80% – of the mallee country were cleared for agricultural development, beginning as early as the 1880s. Most of the remaining natural vegetation is in protected areas such as Ngarkat Conservation Park, Billiatt Conservation Park, Karte Conservation Park, Peebinga Conservation Park, Bakara Conservation Park and Lowan Conservation Park.

It is located on the lower reaches of the River Murray, near where the river flows into Lake Alexandrina. The town grew and consolidated through being a large railway centre between the 1890s and 1990s; now it continues to service regional rural communities. Rail transport in the Australian state of South Australia is provided by a number of railway operators who operate over the government-owned railway lines. The network consists of 1435 mm standard gauge links to other states, the 1600 mm broad gauge suburban railways in Adelaide, a freight-only branch from Dry Creek to Port Adelaide and Pelican Point, a narrow-gauge gypsum haulage line on the Eyre Peninsula, and both copper–gold concentrate and coal on the standard-gauge line in the Adelaide–Darwin rail corridor north of Tarcoola.

The Riverland is a region of South Australia. It covers an area of 9,386 square kilometres (3,624 sq mi) along the River Murray from where it flows into South Australia from New South Wales and Victoria downstream to Blanchetown. The major town centres are Renmark, Berri, Loxton, Waikerie, Barmera and Monash, and many minor townships. The population is approximately 35,000 people.

Pinnaroo is a town in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia, near the border with Victoria, 243 km east of Adelaide. Pinnaroo is on the north side of the Mallee Highway, and on the railway line between Tailem Bend and Ouyen. The roadhouse on the highway at Pinnaroo is the first "food and leg-stretch" stop on the bus route from Adelaide to Sydney.

Parilla is a town and a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located in the state's Murray Mallee region about 192 kilometres (119 mi) east of the state capital of Adelaide, about 32 kilometres (20 mi) west of the municipal seat of Pinnaroo and about 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) east of the town of Lameroo.

Lameroo is a town in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia. It is on the Mallee Highway and Pinnaroo railway line about 40 km west of the Victorian border, or 210 km east of Adelaide. It is primarily a service town for the surrounding rural areas, growing grain and sheep. Lameroo now includes the former settlements of Kulkami, Mulpata, Wirha and Gurrai, which were on the Peebinga railway line, and Wilkawatt, which was between Parrakie and Lameroo on the Pinnaroo railway.

The Adelaide–Wolseley railway line is a 313 kilometre line running from Adelaide to Wolseley on the Australian Rail Track Corporation network. It is the South Australian section of the Melbourne–Adelaide railway.

Wanbi is a township on the Karoonda Highway in the Australian state of South Australia, about 160 kilometres (99 mi) east of the state capital of Adelaide and about 56 kilometres (35 mi) north-east of the municipal seat of Karoonda. Situated on a ridgeline covered by mallee trees, it has a one-street layout common to many South Australian townships. A hotel, advertised as being "in the heart of the scrub, stumps and sand", was built in 1932, when commercial activity was increasing and a general store, cream depot and several houses – most housing South Australian Railways employees – were present.

The Murraylands is a geographical region of the Australian state of South Australia (SA); its name reflects that of the river running through it. Lying due east of South Australia's capital city, Adelaide, it extends from the eastern slopes of the Mount Lofty Ranges to the border with the state of Victoria, a distance of about 180 kilometres. The north-to-south distance is about 130 kilometres. The region's economy is centred on agriculture, and tourism, especially along its 200-kilometre (120-mile) frontage of the River Murray.

The Loxton railway line is a closed railway line in the northern Murray Mallee region of South Australia. It ran north-east from Tailem Bend to grain silos near Loxton.

The Barmera railway line was the second railway built to develop the Murray Mallee region of South Australia, in 1913. It followed the success of the Pinnaroo railway line in 1906. Both lines branched east from Tailem Bend to the north of the main Melbourne–Adelaide railway. The Brown's Well line was the more northerly, and extended into country which had not been developed much before the railway, partly due to the absence of any viable transport route for produce. The original terminus of the Brown's Well railway was at Meribah, not far from the Victorian border.

Browns Well Highway is a road connecting Loxton, South Australia through the Murray Mallee to Pinnaroo in South Australia. It was named in 2008 after the Browns Well district for areas traversed by the highway.

The Peebinga railway line was a railway line in the South Australian Railways network. It opened on 18 December 1914, originating from a junction with the Barmera line at Karoonda. The line extended eastward through the Murray Mallee region, ultimately terminating at Peebinga, located just two kilometres from the Victorian state border. The railway was officially closed on 7 December 1990.

Tailem Bend railway station is located on the Adelaide-Wolseley line in Tailem Bend, South Australia. It is also the junction point for the Loxton and Pinnaroo lines.

The Ngarkat is a recorded title of a tribal group from South Australia. The Ngarkat lands had linked the mallee peoples of Victoria and South Australia to the river peoples of the Murray River Murraylands. Ngarkat language has been loosely grouped with Peramangk language though not by linguists, and the grouping was perhaps partly owed to the co-ownership of lands in both the Ninety Mile Desert and Echunga by John Barton Hack, and partly to the occasional meeting of tribes. The language of the Ngarkat was recorded as being Boraipur by Ryan in recent times though sources were not given, while it may yet be telling that the citing work concerns Mallee peoples to the east. The language may have been midway between that of mallee peoples to the east, and that of peoples to the west recorded by Teichelmann and Schurman. It is known that songlines linked the Coorong to the Mallee regions, hence went through Ngarkat land. It is also known that Ngarkat people did meet regularly with tribes to the east, at sites along the Murray.

Karte is a town and a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located in the state’s east about 192 kilometres (119 mi) east of the state capital of Adelaide, about 30 kilometres (19 mi) north-west of the municipal seat of Pinnaroo and about 35 kilometres (22 mi) north-east of the town of Lameroo.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">County of Chandos</span> Cadastral in South Australia

The County of Chandos is one of the 49 cadastral counties of South Australia. It was proclaimed in 1893 and named by Governor Kintore for the Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, Richard Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville who was appointed Secretary of State for the Colonies in 1867. It covers a large portion of the southern Mallee region, adjacent to the state border with Victoria in the state's south east.
