The National Defence College, Kenya (NDCK) is a training facility under NDU-K https://ndu.ac.ke/ for senior commanders in the Military of Kenya, including the army, navy, air force and special forces. Training is also availed to senior Kenyan civil servants and senior military officers from African countries and other continents. [1]

Location

The college is located in Karen, a suburb of Kenya's capital of Nairobi, approximately 19 kilometres (12 mi), by road, west of Nairobi's central business district. [2] The coordinates of NDCK are:1°18'10.0"S, 36°42'00.0"E (Latitude:-1.3028; Longitude:36.7000). [3]

History

The college was established in 1992, to train senior Kenyan military officers in National Security Studies. Due to limited available training openings and the high cost of training in foreign military academies, the Government of Kenya established the NDCK. For the next five years, a panel of high-ranking military officers set up the college and structured the courses offered. In 1997, the college admitted its first class, and has graduated a class every year starting in 1998. The annual intake as at November 2014, is 40 participants. Beginning in 2002, the college, in collaboration with the University of Nairobi, awards the Diploma, Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in International Studies. [4]

Courses

The most popular course is the one year National Security Course, that lasts 45 weeks of study, with two breaks, each of 2 to 3 weeks duration. Other courses leading to the award of Diploma, BA and MA degrees in conjunction with Nairobi University, are also offered.

Levi Karuhanga was a major general in Uganda. He was the Chairman of the UPDF General Court Martial, one of the highest military courts in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). He was appointed to that position in June 2014 by Yoweri Museveni, the commander in chief of the UPDF and the president of Uganda. He replaced Moses Ddiba Ssentongo whose one-year tenure at the court had expired. Before that, Karuhanga served as the Commander of the Reserve Force in the UPDF.

The Uganda Senior Command and Staff College (USCSC) is a training facility for senior commanders in the Uganda People's Defense Force (UPDF), including the army, air force, and special forces.

Major General Fredrick Mugisha, commonly referred to as Fred Mugisha, is a senior military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Force and assumed command over AMISOM as the fourth commander on 15 June 2011.

Lieutenant General Andrew Gutti is a Ugandan military officer. He was the Chairman of the General Court Martial of the Uganda People's Defence Force until 3 August 2000, when he handed over office to Brigadier General Robert Freeman Mugabe. Gutti was appointed to that position in May 2016, replacing the late Major General Levi Karuhanga.

Major General Sam Kavuma, whose full name is Samuel Kavuma, is a Ugandan senior military officer. He currently serves as the deputy coordinator of the Operation Wealth Creation effective 24 June 2021, he was appointed by Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Immediately prior to his current position, he served as the deputy commander of the UPDF Air Force. Before that, Kavuma served as the Commander of the UPDF Contingent in Somalia, as part of the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM). He was appointed to that position in October 2014. He replaced Brigadier Dick Olum, who served in that position from September 2013 until October 2014.

Major General Innocent Felix Oula is a senior army officer in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). As of March 2020, he serves as the Head of Civil Military Cooperation. He concurrently serves as one of the UPDF representatives to the Parliament of Uganda. He was elected to that position in January 2014, replacing renegade General David Sejusa, who was expelled from Parliament.

Brigadier General Francis Takirwa, is a Ugandan military officer who, effective December 2019, is the commanding officer of the Second Division of the Uganda People's Defence Forces, based in the city of Mbarara in the Western Region of Uganda.
