Nicolaas Mattheus de Jager,known as Nico de Jager,is a South African politician and a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature for the Democratic Alliance (DA). He previously served as the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Environmental and Infrastructure Services in the City of Johannesburg under Mayor Herman Mashaba from 2017 to 2019 and as a city councillor from 2005 to 2021.
De Jager attended Langenhoven High School in Riversdale,Western Cape. He holds formal qualifications in public administration and economics.
After the 2000 municipal elections,De Jager went on to become the branch chairperson of the Democratic Alliance's Thabeni branch in Johannesburg. He became a DA PR councillor in 2005. [1] De Jager was the DA's Shadow Mayoral Committee Member for Transport in the city. [2] In September 2016,he was elected chairperson of the city's Section 79 Transport committee.
In February 2017,De Jager was appointed as the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Environmental and Infrastructure Services,replacing Anthony Still. [1] [3] He served until November 2019,when mayor Herman Mashaba resigned. [4]
De Jager was sworn in as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature on 18 February 2021. [5]
In April 2021,De Jager denounced Castro Ntobeko,an African National Congress member and employee of the Gauteng Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs,for celebrating the death of four gay men and called for his immediate suspension. [6]
He said in May 2021 that the DA opposed the renaming of William Nicol Drive to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Drive because of the timing due to the impacts of COVID-19 on businesses in the area and not because of the name itself. [7]
De Jager criticised the ANC in June 2021 during Pride Month for refusing to fly the Rainbow flag at the Johannesburg City council. [8]
De Jager is gay. He was one of a number of gay DA councillors in Johannesburg when he was still a councillor. [9]
John Henry Steenhuisen is a South African politician who has served as the leader of the Opposition since October 2019 and has been the federal leader of the Democratic Alliance since November 2020,having served as the interim leader for one year from November 2019. He was chief whip of the official opposition from May 2014 until October 2019. Mmusi Aloysias Maimane is a South African politician,businessman,and Leader of Build One South Africa,a political party. Maimane is also the former Leader of South Africa's opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) political party from 10 May 2015 to 23 October 2019,and the former Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of South Africa from 29 May 2014 to 24 October 2019. He is the former leader of the DA in the Johannesburg City Council and the DA National Spokesperson. In 2011,he was elected to be the DA's Johannesburg mayoral candidate in the 2011 municipal elections. In that election,Maimane helped to grow the party's voter base,but was not elected mayor. Thereafter he served as Leader of the Official Opposition on the Johannesburg City Council until May 2014. In addition to his political career,he is also a pastor and elder at Liberty Church. Herman Samtseu Philip Mashaba is a South African politician,entrepreneur and the current president of ActionSA,a party he launched on 29 August 2020. He served as the Mayor of Johannesburg from 2016 to 2019. He is the founder of the hair product company Black Like Me. He is famous in South Africa for his background:he grew up struggling against poverty and the apartheid government to open his own hair business,which became the biggest hair brand in South Africa,making him a millionaire. He publicly backed Mmusi Maimane in the Democratic Alliance leadership race. He wrote the autobiography Black Like You and recently he wrote his new memoir "The accidental mayor". Mashaba is a libertarian and "capitalist crusader" whose highest value is "individual freedom."
The 2021 South African municipal elections were held on 1 November 2021,to elect councils for all district,metropolitan and local municipalities in each of the country's nine provinces. It is the sixth municipal election held in South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994,held every five years. The previous municipal elections were held in 2016. On 21 April 2021,President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the elections will be held on Wednesday,27 October 2021. It had been recommend by Dikgang Moseneke to delay the municipal elections until 2022. The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) requested the Constitutional Court to support the date postponement. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supported the date postponement while the Democratic Alliance (DA) was against the postponement of the date. The Constitutional Court dismissed the application to postpone the date until 2022,ruling that they had to take place between 27 October and 1 November. On 9 September 2021,the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs,Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma announced that the elections would be held on 1 November.

He was a member of the African National Congress and the party's regional chair. During the administration of Parks Tau,he served as the MMC for Finance.
Audrey Winifred Morakane Ketlhoilwe Mosupyoe,known as Morakane Mosupyoe,is a South African politician serving as the Gauteng Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Sports,Arts,Culture and Recreation since October 2022. She was the MEC for Economic Development,Agriculture and Environment from October 2019 to December 2020 as well as well as the Gauteng MEC for Social Development from December 2020 until October 2022. Prior to her election to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature in 2019,she served as a Tshwane city councillor. Mosupyoe is a member of the African National Congress.
Patrick George Atkinson is a South African politician who has served as a Democratic Alliance Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.
