Frederik Petrus Nel (born 23 March 1970) is a South African politician who has served as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature since May 2009,representing the Democratic Alliance. He is the DA's Gauteng Shadow MEC for Roads and Transport. Nel was elected as the DA provincial chairperson in 2020 and re-elected in 2023.
Nel was born in Pretoria on 23 March 1970. He matriculated from Hoërskool Waterkloof in 1987. He earned a BA Honours degree in geography from the University of Pretoria. [1] Nel worked in public relations,tourism marketing,market research and corporate social investment consulting before he became active in politics. [1]
Nel started his political career in 1988 on the UP campus and was elected the Democratic Party's National Youth Leader in 1992. He was elected as a DP councillor in the Greater Pretoria Metropolitan Council in 1998. In 2000,Nel was elected to the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality council as a member of the Democratic Alliance. He was appointed caucus chief whip. Nel became caucus leader in 2003. [1] In 2009,Nel was elected to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. [2] After his re-election in 2014,Nel was appointed Shadow MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements by DA caucus leader John Moodey. [3] In 2016,he was appointed Shadow MEC for Roads and Transport. [4]
He was re-elected to another term in 2019. Newly elected DA caucus leader Solly Msimanga announced that Nel would remain in his post. [5] He is currently a member of the Roads &Transport Committee and the DA's constituency contact in Mamelodi West.
In 2020,Nel announced his candidacy to succeed Michael Moriarty as provincial chairperson of the DA. He went up against the DA's chairperson in Ekurhuleni,Selby Thekiso. [6] He won the election on 14 November 2020 with 67% of the vote. [7] [8] Bongani Nkomo was elected his deputy. [9]
Nel was elected to a second term as DA provincial chairperson at the party's provincial congress in 2023,after defeating Katlego Mathebe. [10] [11]
Nel has three children named Caroux Nel,Derik Nel and Stefan Nel. [1]
Mike Waters is a South African politician,and former Member of Parliament for the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA),where he served as the Opposition's Deputy Chief Whip from 2014 to 2019. He served as the Shadow Minister of Health from 2006 to 2012,and as the Shadow Minister of Social Development from 2012 to 2014.

Andrew Louw is a South African politician who served as Leader of the Opposition in the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature from 2014 until 2021. He was the Provincial Leader of the Democratic Alliance in the Northern Cape from 2009 to 2020. He was previously a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa where he served as the Shadow Minister of Labour. Louw was the Democratic Alliance's Northern Cape Premier candidate for the 2014 and 2019 elections.
Solly Tshepiso Msimanga is a South African politician serving as the Leader of the Opposition in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature since May 2019. He has been a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature since February 2019,having previously served from 2014 to 2016. Msimanga was the Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality from 2016 to 2019 and the DA Provincial Chairperson from 2014 to 2017. He is currently the Democratic Alliance's Gauteng Premier candidate for the 2024 elections. Msimanga was the party's unsuccessful candidate for the 2019 elections.
An Indirect mayoral election occurred on 12 February 2019 in the Tshwane City Council to determine the successor of Solly Msimanga as Mayor of Tshwane. Msimanga announced in January 2019 that he would resign as mayor,therefore creating a vacancy in the position.
Thomas Charles Ravenscroft Walters is a South African politician of the Democratic Alliance (DA) who has been serving as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since May 2014. He served as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2014. In 2012,Walters was elected Deputy Federal Council Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance,and has been deputising Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille since 2019. He deputised James Selfe from 2012 to 2019. Walters was the party's Shadow Minister and Shadow Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform.
Andrek "Panyaza" Lesufi is a South African politician who was appointed the seventh Premier of Gauteng in October 2022. He was previously Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education in the Gauteng provincial government between May 2014 and October 2022,with the exception of a two-day stint as MEC for Finance in May 2019. Simultaneously,he was acting MEC for Social Development between November 2019 and June 2020.
John Clifford Moodey is a South African politician who served as the Provincial Leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng from 2007 to 2010 and from 2012 to 2020. Moodey was a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature from 2004 to 2020 and served as Leader of the Opposition from 2014 to 2019. He was the party's Shadow MEC for Community Safety.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) held its leadership conference virtually between 31 October and 1 November 2020. It was originally scheduled to be held in May 2020,but was postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The previous congress was held in 2018. In October 2019,then-party leader Mmusi Maimane announced that the party would seek to hold a policy conference and early elective congress in 2020. Maimane and former party chair Athol Trollip have since resigned from their positions and the DA. The party elected John Steenhuisen and Ivan Meyer as their interim successors,respectively.
Michael Sean Moriarty is a South African politician. He served as the chief whip of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. He was elected to the legislature in 2009 and resigned from it in 2021. He was also the provincial chairperson of the DA in Gauteng. Moriarty was previously a City of Johannesburg municipal councillor.
Refiloe Nt'sekhe is a South African politician who has been a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature since 2014. A member of the Democratic Alliance,she served as one of the party's deputy federal chairpersons between 2015 and 2023 and as one of the party's national spokespeople between 2015 and 2020.
Michéle Odette Clarke is a South African politician. A member of the Democratic Alliance,Clarke served as a councillor in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality from 2004 until her election to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature as a DA representative in 2014. After serving one term in the provincial legislature,Clarke was elected to the National Assembly of South Africa in 2019. Jack Bloom is a South African politician who has been a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature since 1994,representing the Democratic Party from 1994 until 2003 and the Democratic Alliance from 2003 onwards. Bloom is the DA's shadow MEC for health. Bloom was the DA caucus leader and the Leader of the Opposition in the provincial legislature from December 2007 to April 2009 and again from March 2011 until May 2014.

He was then appointed as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure. A year later,he became the MEC for Economic and Small Business Development,Tourism and Environmental Affairs. Mashinini was appointed MEC for Police,Roads &Transport in October 2016. He was dismissed in October 2021.
