Matshidiso Morwa Annastinah Mfikoe (born 1972) is a South African politician who has served as a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature since February 2023. A member of the African National Congress,she previously served as a member of the National Assembly from October 2022 to January 2023 and before that,as a councillor in the City of Johannesburg from 2000 to 2022 and as a member of the mayoral committee from 2006 to 2016 and again in 2021.
Mfikoe was born in 1972 in Alexandra,Johannesburg. She was a student activist in Soweto,participating in the student youth movements. She was as a member of the Soweto Student Congress (SOSCO) as well as the Soweto Youth Congress (SOYCO). Mfikoe matriculated from Progress Comprehensive High School in Pimville,Soweto in 1991 and became a member of the local African National Congress structures. [1]
Mfikoe earned a bachelor's degree in Public Management and Governance from Regenesys Business School,and a Master of Business Administration from the Management College of Southern Africa. [2]
Mfikoe was a member of the African National Congress Youth League and served as a regional secretary of the youth league until 2000. From 2005 to 2008,she served as a member of the Regional Executive Committee of the ANC in Johannesburg. Mfikoe is also a member of the African National Congress Women's League. [1]
In 2000,Mfikoe was elected as a municipal councillor for the ANC of the city council of the newly established City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. She was a member of the municipal services committee. She joined the mayoral committee of Amos Masondo in 2006 as the mayoral committee member responsible for health. In 2009,Mfikoe was appointed as MMC for Environment and Cooperate Services. Mfikoe became the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Public Safety in the mayoral committee of Parks Tau in 2011. [1]
In 2012,Mfikoe was appointed as MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services. [3] The ANC lost control of the metro in 2016. In August 2021,Mfikoe returned to the mayoral committee as Finance MMC in the executive led by ANC mayor Jolidee Matongo. [4] Following Matongo's death in a car accident in September 2021,newly elected mayor Mpho Moerane's mayoral committee remain unchanged with Mfikoe as MMC for Finance. [5] The ANC lost control of the metro again in November 2021.
On 10 October 2022,Mfikoe was sworn in as a Member of Parliament. [6] She was a member of the Portfolio Committee on Social Development. [7] Mifikoe resigned from Parliament in January 2023 to make way for Gauteng MPL Parks Tau to take up her seat in the National Assembly. She was,in turn,sworn in as a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. [8]
The Mayor of Johannesburg is the highest elected position in the city of Johannesburg,South Africa. Since 2000,they are the chief executive of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality council. The position remained vacant from 24 April 2023,when Thapelo Amad announced his resignation after less than three months in office. On May 5,2023,the council elected Al Jama-ah's Kabelo Gwamanda to the position.
Mpho Franklyn Parks Tau is a South African politician who has been a Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs since March 2023 and a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since February 2023,representing the African National Congress. Before becoming a member of Parliament,Tau had been a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature where he served in the Gauteng Executive Council as MEC for Economic Development from December 2020 to October 2022. Prior to that,he was Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs between May 2019 and December 2020.
The 2021 South African municipal elections were held on 1 November 2021,to elect councils for all district,metropolitan and local municipalities in each of the country's nine provinces. It is the sixth municipal election held in South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994,held every five years. The previous municipal elections were held in 2016. On 21 April 2021,President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the elections will be held on Wednesday,27 October 2021. It had been recommend by Dikgang Moseneke to delay the municipal elections until 2022. The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) requested the Constitutional Court to support the date postponement. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supported the date postponement while the Democratic Alliance (DA) was against the postponement of the date. The Constitutional Court dismissed the application to postpone the date until 2022,ruling that they had to take place between 27 October and 1 November. On 9 September 2021,the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs,Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma announced that the elections would be held on 1 November.
Moloantoa Geoffrey Makhubo was a South African politician who served as the Mayor of Johannesburg from December 2019 until his death from COVID-19 in July 2021. He was a member of the African National Congress and the party's regional chair. During the administration of Parks Tau,he served as the MMC for Finance.
Michael Sean Moriarty is a South African politician. He served as the chief whip of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. He was elected to the legislature in 2009 and resigned from it in 2021. He was also the provincial chairperson of the DA in Gauteng. Moriarty was previously a City of Johannesburg municipal councillor.
Bandile Edgar Wallace Masuku is a South African medical doctor and politician serving as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature since May 2019. He was the Gauteng MEC for Health from May 2019 to October 2020. Masuku is a party member of the African National Congress (ANC).
Tasneem Motara is a South African politician who has been the Gauteng MEC for Economic Development since 2022 and a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature since 2019. She was the MEC for Infrastructure Development and Property Management between May 2019 and October 2022. From May 2014 to May 2019,she represented Gauteng in the National Council of Provinces. She served as the chief whip of the provincial delegation. Motara is a member of the African National Congress.
Audrey Winifred Morakane Ketlhoilwe Mosupyoe,known as Morakane Mosupyoe,is a South African politician serving as the Gauteng Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Sports,Arts,Culture and Recreation since October 2022. She was the MEC for Economic Development,Agriculture and Environment from October 2019 to December 2020 as well as well as the Gauteng MEC for Social Development from December 2020 until October 2022. Prior to her election to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature in 2019,she served as a Tshwane city councillor. Mosupyoe is a member of the African National Congress.
Faith Nonhlanhla Mazibuko is a South African politician from Gauteng. She is the current Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Community Safety. She has been a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature from 1996 to 2004 and currently from 2009. Mazibuko is a member of the African National Congress.
Bekizwe Simon "Bheki" Nkosi is a South African politician who current represents the African National Congress (ANC) as a Member of the National Assembly since 2019. An attorney by training,he was formerly a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature from 1997 to 2012 and he served on the Gauteng Executive Council from 2009 to 2012. He was the deputy president of the ANC Youth League from 1994 to 1996.
Jolidee Matongo was a South African politician who served as the mayor of Johannesburg from 10 August 2021 until his death on 18 September 2021. Prior to his election as mayor,he served as the member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for finance under his predecessor,Geoff Makhubo,who died from COVID-19 complications. Matongo was a member of the African National Congress.
Tshilidzi Bethuel Munyai is a South African politician who was elected as an African National Congress Member of the National Assembly of South Africa in 2019. In August 2021,Munyai served as the acting chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Health. He resigned from Parliament in January 2023 and was subsequently sworn in as a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.
Mpho Moerane was a South African electrician,businessman and politician who was the mayor of Johannesburg between October and November 2021. A member of the African National Congress,he previously served as the member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for environment and infrastructure services from December 2019 to September 2021. Moerane was the regional treasurer of the ANC in Johannesburg.
Ntombi Valencia Khumalo is a South African politician and a member of the National Assembly of South Africa since 2021. She is a member of the Democratic Alliance.
Mpho Louisa Phalatse is a South African medical doctor and politician who was the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. A member of the Democratic Alliance,she served in the position from 22 November 2021 until her ousting in a motion of no-confidence on 26 January 2023. She is the first woman to serve as mayor of the metropolitan municipality,which was established in 2000. She is the first black woman to serve as mayor of the city of Johannesburg and only the second female mayor of the city after Jessie McPherson,who served from 1945 to 1946.
Boyce Makhosonke Maneli is a South African politician from Gauteng who has been Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Communications and a Member of Parliament for the African National Congress since 2019. He had previously served as the Executive Mayor of the West Rand District Municipality from 2016 to 2019 and as the Regional Chairperson of the ANC's West Rand Region from 2014 to 2018.
Sello Enoch Dada Morero is a South African politician who served as the Mayor of Johannesburg for 25 days,from 30 September 2022 until 25 October 2022. Morero is the regional chairperson of the African National Congress in Johannesburg.
Joanmariae Louise Fubbs is a South African retired politician,educator and poet. A member of the governing African National Congress,she was a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature from 1994 until 2004 when she was elected to the National Assembly of South Africa. Following her re-election in 2009,she was elected chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry,a position she would hold until she left Parliament at the 2019 general election.
Thapelo Amad is a South African politician and imam,and a former mayor of Johannesburg. A member of the Johannesburg City Council,Amad is affiliated with the Islamist Al Jama-ah party. On 27 January 2023,he was elected mayor of Johannesburg with the support of the African National Congress (ANC). His election made him the first Muslim to serve as mayor of Johannesburg. He resigned as mayor on 24 April 2023 to avoid being defeated in a motion of no confidence.
Thulani Ndlovu is a South African politician who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature since November 2019. An ANC Youth League activist,he has also been a member of the ANC's Provincial Executive Committee in Gauteng since 2022.
