No More Room in Hell is a cooperative first person survival horror video game, created by Matt "Maxx" Kazan and initially developed as a modification on Valve's Source game engine. Set in a zombie apocalypse, the player assumes the role of one of eight remaining survivors, [1] with a focus on co-operation and survival. The game can be played through "Objective" or "Survival" mode. It is heavily inspired by George A. Romero's Living Dead series, [2] with the title being a reference to Dawn of the Dead , specifically the line "When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth.", [3] and some characters being references to other films such as American Psycho and The Big Lebowski .
The game was first released on October 31, 2011, as a Half-Life 2 mod. It was later officially re-released as a standalone title on October 31, 2013, via Steam Greenlight after having been in development since 2004. [4] It was met with positive reviews. [5] Its sequel, No More Room in Hell 2, was released on October 22nd, 2024.
There are two game modes in the game: Objective mode and Survival mode. In Objective mode, players must follow the instructions given by the game, each Objective mode map has different goals but the ultimate goal is usually to escape the map alive. To increase replayability certain maps can have different objectives, items and routes which can change with every new playthrough. In Survival mode, players must protect certain sectors of a level against waves of incoming zombies. Each new wave brings in more zombies and sometimes new supplies will be dropped from a military helicopter, after a set number of waves a rescue vehicle will arrive to bring the survivors to safety. The health percentages of all the sectors will decrease if players let them become overrun by zombies and if they all reach zero, the rescue vehicle will refuse to arrive and the players lose the match.
The in-game HUD is minimal. There are no crosshairs. Health is indicated by how bright or how dark the screen is. An ammunition counter is only shown when reloading, or if the player holds down the reload key to check their ammunition. The player can change the method of counting ammunition from showing the ammo counter, having their character's voice call out often a vague estimate, or both combined. The player can also add an extra round in the chamber of their firearm even when the magazine is full.
Zombies can grapple and bite players if they get too close, which risks the player becoming infected. This chance is greater if the player's health is low. If a player is infected, veins will appear at the edges of their vision and the colour will progressively get darker. Players can find Phalanx pills which can be used to delay the infection, find Gene Therapy syringes to cure themselves completely and grant immunity to infection, or turn their gun on themselves to prevent reanimation. If the player allows the infection to spread completely, they will die and reanimate as a zombie which can attack other players.
Up to eight players can play together cooperatively in a single server. If a player dies in the middle of an Objective map, easier types of difficulties will allow the player to respawn once the surviving players reach a predefined checkpoint on the map. If a player dies in the middle of a Survival map, they will respawn at the start of the next wave or instantly if they have gained enough points beforehand which is subjected to the game server's difficulty level.
Players are able to use a variety of items and weapons to help them in their goals. Up to 18 firearms are available, each requiring a variety of ammunition types that are scattered around the game. Certain weapons can be more effective than others in dispatching zombies, however these guns can be rare, and its ammunition even rarer. Because of this, numerous melee weapons are available. These can range from blunt weapons like bats and sledgehammers, to edged weapons like fire axes and knives. There are also a few unique melee weapons like chainsaws. Players can also have access to explosives such as grenades and TNT which are helpful in dispatching large hordes of zombies.
No More Room in Hell was named "Mod of the Year" for 2011 by PC Gamer magazine, and was featured in two issues in 2012. [2] The mod was in the top 100 of Mod DB's 2011 Mod of the Year list and was named Multiplayer Mod of the Year 2011. [6] It was featured in Maximum PC in a two-page article about the mod, alongside two-page articles for both DayZ and The War Z in a special about the best of zombie games. NMRiH won the 2012 Mod of the Year from GameFront in a reader poll on Facebook. It was again nominated in 2012 by users of ModDB for Mod of the Year, making it in to the top 100 and subsequently placing third for Player's Choice Mod of the Year. Since it failed to place higher than the previous year, attaining the same ranking as 2011, it did not make it into the official Top Ten list and was supplanted by Cry of Fear . In 2013, it placed second for the ModDB Mod of the Year award. [5]
Although No More Room in Hell was well received because of its realism and its gameplay, there was a significant source of controversy over the inclusion of zombie children. Whereas many other literature, movies and video games tend to shy away from the topic of zombified children, No More Room in Hell both portrayed zombified children and also lets players kill them, which triggered heated debates within the community. [7] Despite the controversial nature of zombified children, the Project Manager and the development team decided to keep them, stating quote:
"To officially address the topic of children zombies:
We will not be removing them. They are a core component of our game design, our design philosophy, and our long-term vision for NMRiH. Part of our goal was to create a zombie game not based on killing and action, but on tension and fear and moral and ethical choice. We are attempting to simulate a real-world collapse of society as a result of a lethal epidemic. If you cannot handle it, do not play the game. We are sorry that some people seem to be offended for one reason or another but we are NOT going to censor our game and our vision.
Reading some posts by players off-put by the zombie children, being unable to shoot them on first encounter.. that is something that we set out to achieve. That reaction is actually intentional, that is what we wanted. This is a game about survival.
Our game is free, and we developed it solely out of passion and fun to make the zombie game we always wanted. If you do not like it, we are sorry and it's unfortunate but this is a no-compromise situation.
We appreciate any and all feedback on the game, as always." [7]
On October 28, 2016, a teaser trailer was posted on the official No More Room in Hell YouTube channel. [8] Later, developers began talking about the development of the game through blog posts on the No More Room in Hell 2 developer blog. [9]
On May 25, 2017, it was announced on the Unreal Engine website that No More Room in Hell was given US$275,000 in that round of Unreal Dev Grants. [10]
No More Room in Hell 2 released its official trailer at the MathChief's Game Expo in 2021. [11] Originally, No More Room in Hell 2 was slated to be released on October 31, 2022, to commemorate Halloween, but its release was delayed after their development team had secured a partnership that enabled them to spend more of their time to developing their product. [12]
On June 7, 2024, it was announced through an official trailer at the Summer Game Fest 2024 that No More Room in Hell 2 [13] will release through early access on Halloween, though this was later revised to October 22nd. [14] Torn Banner Studios served as the game's developer and publisher. [15] The sequel was met with mixed reviews in Early Access, with critics praising the game's vision and atmosphere, while criticizing its game-breaking bugs and server issues. [16] [17] Torn Banner Studios has issued hotfixes to address bugs, but the game remains rough and repetitive, needing more content and polish for a full release. [18]
Firearms is a first-person shooter mod for Half-Life which originated from a Quake modification. Initially developed in 1998, Firearms was created as a quasi-realistic team-based FPS. The mod's main feature is the large amount of usable weapons in the game.
Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil is a survival horror first-person shooter video game developed by Nerve Software and published by Activision. It was released for Microsoft Windows worldwide on April 4, 2005, as an expansion pack and sequel to Doom 3 and on October 5, 2005, for the Xbox video game console. The Xbox version does not require the original Doom 3 in order to play, and includes The Ultimate Doom, Doom II: Hell on Earth and Master Levels for Doom II. A remastered version of Resurrection of Evil was included with Doom 3: BFG Edition.
Dead Rising is a 2006 action-adventure game developed and published by Capcom. The game is the first entry in the Dead Rising series. The story follows photojournalist Frank West after he becomes trapped in a zombie infested shopping mall in the town of Willamette, Colorado. Frank must uncover the mystery behind the outbreak before a rescue helicopter arrives in three days to evacuate him. The game features multiple endings depending on the conditions met by the player.
Project Reality is a series of military tactical first-person shooter video game modifications that aim to create a realistic teamwork-based shooter centered around modern warfare and combined arms. The original version, Project Reality: BF2, was released in 2005 for Battlefield 2; this version is still being updated on a regular basis and became a stand-alone game in 2015. Project Reality: ARMA 2, a version developed for Arma 2, was released as a beta in 2011; development was later moved to Arma 3 in 2013, with the project being renamed to Project Reality: ARMA 3. In September 2015 it was announced that the Arma project had been suspended.
Movie Battles II (MBII) is a team-based multiplayer mod for the 2003 third and first-person shooter game Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. It is a successor of the Movie Battles mod for Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. The primary purpose of the mod is to allow players to experience setpiece battle scenes from the Star Wars films and the Star Wars expanded universe. The gameplay is similar to that of the base game, but builds upon it with several new elements. The mod has been lauded for providing one of the best lightsaber combat experiences out of any Star Wars game.
Left 4 Dead is a 2008 first-person shooter game developed by Valve South and published by Valve. It was originally released for Windows and Xbox 360 in November 2008 and for Mac OS X in October 2010, and is the first title in the Left 4 Dead series. Set during the aftermath of a zombie outbreak on the East Coast of the United States, the game pits its four protagonists, dubbed the "Survivors", against hordes of the infected.
Zombie Panic! Source is a cooperative survival-horror Half-Life 2 first-person shooter modification. It is the sequel to the Half-Life mod Zombie Panic. Set in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, players start as a small group of survivors attempting to stay alive. Each map will have its own objectives to complete and win the round or survive by a period of time.
Mechwarrior: Living Legends is a free, fan-created multiplayer-only game based in the BattleTech universe - originally a total-conversion mod for Crysis, it's since become stand-alone - running on Crysis Wars, and using CryEngine 2 as its engine. It's one of the few mods based on the BattleTech universe to have been sanctioned by Microsoft—who currently owns the rights to the Mechwarrior video-game franchise—and additionally received pre-SDK support and sanctioning directly from Crytek, producers of the games' engine. On December 26, 2009, an open beta was released via BitTorrent and other distribution methods. Because the project changes the play-style and feel of the game it is originally based on so completely as to be unrecognizable in comparison, it is billed as a "full-conversion" mod, since little to no trace of the original game's art or play-style exists any longer within MW:LL. It was created by American developer Wandering Samurai Studios.
Killing Floor is a cooperative first-person shooter video game developed and published by Tripwire Interactive. It was originally released as an Unreal Tournament 2004 mod in 2005. A full retail release followed on May 14, 2009, for Microsoft Windows, and for OS X on May 5, 2010. A version for Linux was released via Steam in November 2012.
Left 4 Dead 2 is a 2009 first-person shooter video game developed and published by Valve. The sequel to Left 4 Dead (2008) and the second game in the Left 4 Dead series, it was released for Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 in November 2009, Mac OS X in October 2010, and Linux in July 2013.
Sniper Elite V2 is a 2012 third-person tactical shooter stealth video game developed and published by Rebellion Developments. It is the sequel to 2005's Sniper Elite, which takes place in the same timeframe and location—the Battle of Berlin in April and May 1945—but with an altered narrative. The game's story follows an American OSS officer who must eliminate a group of scientists involved in the German V-2 rocket program before the Red Army captures them. A sequel named Sniper Elite III was released in 2014. A remastered version for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One was released on May 14, 2019.
ZombiU is a 2012 first-person survival horror video game developed by Ubisoft Montpellier and published by Ubisoft. It was released for the Wii U as one of its launch games in November 2012. In the game, the player assumes control of a human survivor amid a 2012 zombie apocalypse. Featuring a permadeath system, it uses the Wii U GamePad extensively to scan the environment and maintain the survivor's inventory. The game was released under the name Zombi for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One in August 2015. The port, handled by Straight Right, adds new melee weapons and removes the multiplayer feature.
Dying Light is a 2015 survival horror video game developed by Techland and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The game's story follows undercover agent Kyle Crane who is sent to infiltrate a quarantine zone in a fictional Middle Eastern city called Harran. It features an enemy-infested, open world city with a dynamic day–night cycle, in which zombies are slow and clumsy during daytime and extremely aggressive at night. The gameplay is focused on weapons-based combat and parkour, allowing players to choose fight or flight when presented with dangers. The game features an asymmetrical multiplayer mode, and a four-player co-operative multiplayer mode.
Contagion is a survival horror first-person shooter video game, developed and published for PC by American independent studio Monochrome. It is the spiritual successor to Zombie Panic! Source. The game was mostly self-funded of its development, but with the support of others via a successful Kickstarter campaign, it was able to be released on Steam as an Early Access title. Contagion released on October 25, 2013 as a Steam Early Access title and was published as full release on April 11, 2014.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is a 2014 first-person shooter video game published by Activision. The eleventh major installment in the Call of Duty series, the game was developed by Sledgehammer Games for PlayStation 4, Windows and Xbox One, while High Moon Studios developed the versions released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and Raven Software developed the game's multiplayer and the Exo-Zombies mode.
Unturned is a partly free-to-play game by Smartly Dressed Games, a studio consisting solely of Canadian game designer Nelson Sexton. It was released for Windows, macOS, and Linux in early access on July 7, 2014. The full game released three years later, on July 17, 2017. Unturned allows players to create custom maps using an in-game editor. Cosmetics and mods can also be created using the game's Unity engine, which allows them to publish creations on the Steam Workshop. A retail version of the game was released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One by 505 Games in November 2020. It was later ported to Nintendo Switch in March 2024.

Resident Evil 2 is a 2019 survival horror game developed and published by Capcom. A remake of the 1998 game Resident Evil 2, it was released for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One in January 2019 and for Amazon Luna, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch in 2022. Versions for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS are scheduled to be released in December 2024. Players control the rookie police officer Leon S. Kennedy and the college student Claire Redfield as they attempt to escape Raccoon City during a zombie outbreak.
Insurgency: Sandstorm is a multiplayer tactical first-person shooter video game developed by New World Interactive and published by Focus Home Interactive. The game is a sequel to the 2014 video game Insurgency. Set in an unnamed fictional Middle Eastern region, the game depicts a conflict between two factions: "Security", loosely based on various militaries ; and "Insurgents", loosely based on various paramilitary and terrorist groups.
