Research and Development is a free mod for the first-person shooter video game Half-Life 2: Episode Two . Developed by Matt Bortolino and released on July 17, 2009, [1] it is a non-violent first-person puzzle video game, and has been compared to Portal. It received critical praise for its unique gameplay and high development quality.
The game does not have an overt story; the player wakes up as an unnamed character in a detailed but generic location, not knowing how they got there, and must start solving puzzles in order to escape. [2] [3]
The mod takes place in the Half-Life universe, but strips the player of their weapons, giving them only a Gravity Gun and antlion bait. [3] The player must solve puzzles to traverse the levels, to the point where the game resembles a point-and-click adventure. [4]
Research and Development utilizes similar puzzles as those seen in between the shooter gameplay in Half-Life 2, but turns them into an entire game. [4]
Alec Meer of Rock, Paper, Shotgun called the game "as must-play as an [Half-Life 2] mod gets", and stated that the game's non-combative player character is "in many ways more keeping with the mind-over-matter character we're often told Gordon Freeman is than the openly, incongruously murderous role he dons in Valve's games". [4] Nick Breckon of Shacknews recommended the game, praising its "refreshing amount of original mechanics and crafted special effects". [2] Tom Sykes of PC Gamer called the game one of the best Half-Life 2 single-player mods, saying that it is "surprising just how easily Half-Life 2's toolset translates" to the new focus of puzzles. [5] Gry Online called the game's puzzles "ingenious", remarking that their solutions were completely logical. [6] Anthony Burch of Destructoid stated that the game "provides clever fun in a way very few games - never mind how many modifications - are capable of," and that he "almost [felt] guilty playing this game for free," criticizing some bugs in the game, but calling its final levels "spectacular". Crusader Kings II is a grand strategy game developed by Paradox Development Studio and published by Paradox Interactive. Desktop Dungeons is a single-player roguelike-like puzzle video game developed and published by QCF Design. Released in November 2013, the game underwent a lengthy public beta phase, during which it was available to customers who pre-ordered the game. In the game, players navigate a dungeon filled with monsters before battling a final dungeon boss. The game has qualities of a puzzle as players must find the best methods to use items, spells, and upgrades to reach the final boss without losing too much of their character's health. Desktop Dungeons has been compared to a roguelike but with condensed gameplay. Desktop Dungeons received an award for Excellence in Design at the 2011 Independent Games Festival. The game is available for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android. A video game remake titled Desktop Dungeons: Rewind was announced in 2022 and released April 18, 2023.

The game provides the basic framework and tools for more than 170 fan-made missions, including several multi-mission campaigns. The Dark Mod was founded by David Massey and first released in 2009 as a total conversion mod for Doom 3. Long War is a fan-made partial conversion mod for the turn-based tactics video game XCOM: Enemy Unknown and its expansion, XCOM: Enemy Within. It was first released in early 2013, and it exited beta at the end of 2015. Almost every aspect of the original game is altered, creating a longer, more complex campaign that presents players with more strategic choices and customization options. Long War adds a significant number of new soldier classes, abilities, weapons, armors, and usable items, and also introduces new features, including soldier fatigue and improvements to alien units over the course of the game.
Teardown is a 2022 sandbox–puzzle video game developed and published by Tuxedo Labs. The game revolves around the owner of a financially stricken demolition company, who is caught undertaking a questionable job and becomes entangled between helping police investigations and taking on further dubious assignments. Teardown features levels made of destructible voxels, and the player follows the campaign through consecutive missions. In most missions, the player must collect or destroy objects connected to a security alarm that triggers a timer. The player has unlimited time to prepare and is given upgradable tools, vehicles, and explosives to create a path within the level that allows them to complete the objectives and reach a getaway vehicle before the timer runs out.
Portal Reloaded is a 2021 mod for the 2011 puzzle-platform game Portal 2, developed and published by Jannis Brinkman. As in the official Portal series, gameplay involves solving puzzles by manipulating portals, which allow the player to move through chambers. The mod also allows the player to shoot a third "time portal", allowing traversal across two versions of the puzzle chamber in different time periods. The player assumes control of a test subject who has to complete puzzles inside the Aperture Science Enrichment Center and destroy a "rogue test subject".
