Cricket was included in the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Malaysia. Matches were played over 50 overs, and had List A status rather than full One Day Internationals. As is normal at the multisports events, the Caribbean islands that entered participated as separate nations, not as the combined West Indies team. Indeed, the Games were the first occasion on which an Antigua and Barbuda side competed at a senior level. Northern Ireland also entered, this occurrence being noteworthy because Irish cricket is usually represented by an all-island Irish cricket team.

John Desmond "Dekker" Curry is an Irish former cricketer. A left-handed batsman and right-arm off-break bowler, he made his debut for the Ireland cricket team against an England Amateur team in July 1992, and went on to represent Ireland on 50 occasions, his last game coming against Scotland in the 2001 ICC Trophy.

Neil David Carson is a former Irish cricketer. He was a left-handed batsman and right-arm medium-pace bowler. His career playing for Ireland got off to an excellent start in 1998 with a half-century against Bangladesh, and he went on to represent his country on 22 occasions, including two first-class and three List A matches. He also represented Northern Ireland in the cricket tournament at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, a tournament which consisted of his first three List A matches.

The Northern Ireland national cricket team is a representative cricket team for Northern Ireland. It does not play in International Cricket Council (ICC) competitions, as Northern Ireland is part of Cricket Ireland and is represented by the Ireland cricket team. However, a standalone Northern Ireland team has been formed on a few occasions.

The Australian cricket team toured the Caribbean from February to April 1999 to play four Tests and seven One Day Internationals (ODIs) against the West Indies. Australia additionally played three first-class matches, winning two and drawing one. The Test series was drawn 2–2 resulting in the Frank Worrell Trophy remaining in Australia. The ODI series was also drawn with three wins each and one tie. This was the first four-match series in the history of Test cricket to finish as a two-all draw. The only other four-match Test series, as of January 2024, to finish with the same result was England at home to Pakistan in 2016.
