Cricket was included in the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Malaysia. This was the only time cricket was played at a Commonwealth Games until a women's tournament was included in the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Matches were played over 50 overs, and had List A status rather than full One Day Internationals. As is normal at the multisports events, the Caribbean islands that entered participated as separate nations, not as the combined West Indies team. Indeed, the Games were the first occasion on which an Antigua and Barbuda side competed at a senior level. Northern Ireland also entered, this occurrence being noteworthy because Irish cricket is usually represented by an all-island Irish cricket team.

Arul Vivasvan Suppiah is a former Malaysian cricketer. As a right-handed batsman and left-arm orthodox spin bowler, he played for the Malaysia national cricket team and county cricket in England for Somerset County Cricket Club. His career highs involve holding a world record for best Twenty20 bowling figures and first-class innings of 156 against India, in a match before the Test series against England. He is the youngest ever player to play for Malaysia, and has played for England at Under-14, Under-15, Under-16 and Under-18 level. He has also represented England Under-16s at hockey. His elder brother Rohan also played for Malaysia.

The 2004 ICC Intercontinental Cup was the inaugural edition of the ICC Intercontinental Cup first class cricket tournament, an international cricket tournament between nations who have not been awarded Test status by the International Cricket Council. The tournament took place last from 25 March to 23 November 2004. The competition included 12 teams, divided by geographical region into four groups of three, followed by semi-finals and a final which were played 2 Venues In United Arab Emirates, The Sharjah Cricket Stadium In Sharjah and Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium In Abu Dhabi.

It was the second round of matches in Group A of the 2019–2022 Cricket World Cup Challenge League, a cricket tournament which forms part of the qualification pathway to the 2023 Cricket World Cup. All of the matches have List A status, and were played at the Maple Leaf North-West Ground in King City, Ontario. Originally, the tournament was scheduled to take place in August 2021, but was postponed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
