Off-White is an Italian fashion brand founded by American multidisciplinary designer Virgil Abloh in Milan in 2013. [2] [3] In September 2024, LVMH sold it to brand management company Bluestar Alliance, [4] [5] which owns Scotch & Soda, Hurley, bebe, and Catherine Malandrino. [6]

History

The company was first founded as "PYREX VISION" by Virgil Abloh in Milan, Italy in 2012. [3] Abloh then rebranded the company as Off-White in 2013, which he described as "the grey area between black and white as the color off-white" to the fashion world. [7] It has shown collections at Paris Fashion Week shows, and is sold in boutiques in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Milan, London, and New York City. [7]

In August 2019, the British e-commerce company Farfetch, purchased Off-White's parent organization New Guards Group for US$675 million. [8]

In July 2021, LVMH announced it would be taking a 60% stake in Off-White, with Farfetch retaining the remaining 40%. [9] [10] [11] However, Abloh owned the trademark for Off-White. [12] [13]

Ib Kamara was appointed Art & Image Director for Off-White on April 30, 2022. [14]

In 2024, LVMH sold Off-White to Bluestar Alliance. [15]

Collaborations

Off-White has collaborated with brands such as, Nike, Levi, Rimowa, Jimmy Choo, IKEA, Moncler, Browns, Warby Parker, SSENSE, Sunglass Hut, Champion, Evian, Converse, Dr. Martens, Barneys New York, Umbro, Timberland, Byredo, Le Bon Marché, Chrome Hearts and A.C. Milan. They have also collaborated with musicians and designers such as Takashi Murakami, Heron Preston, ASAP Rocky, Boys Noize, Asspizza, and Kerwin Frost. [16] [17]

In Fall 2016, and Winter 2017, the company collaborated with Levi's main line, Made & Crafted, and released twelve pieces, six of which were unisex. [16]

In early 2017, the company collaborated with Nike and worked on a project named "The Ten", which is a sneaker collection featuring Air Jordans, Converse, Nike Air Max, Nike Air Force One, and Nike Blazers shoes. [18] The collaborations shoe line was divided into two categories, the "Revealing" and "Ghosting". [19] [20] The Off-White and Nike designers had an updated take on Nineties-style shoes, with various patterns and different types of material such as plastic and tulle. [16]

In 2017, the company collaborated with Champion developing sixteen items of clothing, including tracksuits, hoodies, fleeces, and t-shirts. [16] In August 2017, the company also collaborated with ASAP Rocky with his label AWGE. [21] In 2018, the company partnered with Jimmy Choo to create a Summer/Spring collection inspired by Lady Diana, former Princess of Wales. [16]

In April 2018, the company collaborated with IKEA on furniture targeted towards millennials. [22] In Fall 2018 and Winter 2019, the company collaborated with Sunglass Hut on a unisex line of sunglasses called "For Your Eyes Only". [16] In March 2019, the company collaborated with SSENSE on a range of workout clothes. [23] On June 5, 2018, the company released its collaboration with Rimowa, a transparent suitcase in limited edition. [24] Following the success of the collaboration, a second collection including two RIMOWA x Off-White transparent suitcases (a white version and a black version) was launched in October 2018. [25]

In June 2019, the company collaborated with the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, to create a new "University Blue" color of the Nike Air Force One. [26]

From 2023 to 2024, the company collaborated with Mattel Creations to create 4 Off-White™ c/o Monster High dolls. The Off-White™ team hand-picked each outfit from their most iconic runway shows. Those being from 2018, the Spring 2017 collection, the SS17 collection and the 2020 fall collection. “The Off-White™ team sent us references of patterns, runway photography and even some in-house samples to understand the construction of the garments and accessories,” said Mattel Creations designer Annalise Lao.

In September 2024, the company entered a multi-year partnership with WNBA team New York Liberty. [27] In 2024 the company showed a collection for the first time at New York Fashion Week. [28] [29]

Farfetch is a British e-commerce company focused on luxury clothing and beauty products. It operates as a digital marketplace that sells products from several hundred brands, boutiques and department stores from around the world. In January 2024, the company was acquired by Coupang.

Rimowa GmbH, often stylized as RIMOWA, is a luxury luggage manufacturer. The company was founded in 1898, in Cologne, Germany.

Virgil Abloh was a Ghanaian-American fashion designer and entrepreneur. A trained architect, Abloh founded his own line of luxury streetwear clothing under the moniker Pyrex Vision in 2012, which he transformed into the Milan based fashion label Off-White in 2013. Abloh was appointed artistic director of Louis Vuitton's menswear collection beginning in 2018, and was given increased creative responsibilities across the LVMH brand in early 2021. Abloh worked in Chicago street fashion, before he entered the world of international fashion with an internship at Fendi in 2009, alongside American rapper Kanye West. Abloh assumed the role of creative director at Donda, West's creative agency in 2010.

Nike and Off-White: "The Ten" was a sneakers collaboration between Nike and Off-White in 2017. It initially involved the deconstruction of ten iconic Nike silhouettes, designed by Founder and CEO of Off-White, Virgil Abloh. The ten shoes were individually broken down by Abloh, and then rebuilt with a different design and rearranged components. The collaboration sold out and the shoes became highly sought after. Further additions to this collaboration were then added throughout 2018 and 2019 which included endorsements from athletes and celebrities but are not included in the original "ten".

Colm Dillane, also known as KidSuper, is an American artist, fashion designer, and musician. He is the founder of KidSuper, a streetwear clothing brand based in Brooklyn, New York. In January 2023, Dillane creative directed Louis Vuitton's men's fashion show.
