While the town shares its name with the Oneida Indian Nation, there's no direct evidence that the town was founded by or directly connected to the Oneida tribe. The name may have been chosen in homage or simply adopted from other places with the same name.
Oneida is located within Schuykill County, a region known for its historical anthracite coal mining. Specific records about mining in the town are limited, however the town likely developed during the 19th-century coal boom that shaped much of the surrounding area. [6]
