Onslaught are a British thrash metal band from Bristol, England, active from 1982 to 1991 and again since 2005. The band initially drew influences from US and British hardcore punk bands such as Discharge and the Exploited, as well as the new wave of British heavy metal, and eventually adopted a straightforward thrash metal sound. [1] They have been recognised as pioneers of the British thrash metal scene, and have been referred to as one of the country's so-called "big four", along with Sabbat, Xentrix and Acid Reign. [2] [3] [4] [5] To date, Onslaught have released seven studio albums, one compilation, four singles and two live recordings: a live album and a live DVD.

History

Origins and Power from Hell (1982–1985)

Onslaught were formed in 1982 in Bristol, England, by guitarist Nige Rockett and drummer Steve Grice. [6] The two musicians were working to forge an ultra-aggressive, speed metal sound that was becoming more popular in the days of early Slayer and Metallica. In 1985, the duo were joined by bass player Jase Stallard and vocalist Paul Mahoney. [6] The quartet quickly worked up enough material for a record and later that year, the debut album, Power from Hell, was recorded and released on the British independent record label, Cor. [6]

The band started to write more heavy metal–oriented songs, rather than their original punk sound. [7] This was mainly influenced by the early releases of thrash metal bands, albeit with a darker sound. [6] The band signed to Children of the Revolution Records, and released their album, Power from Hell , in 1985 [8] as a result. As with other metal bands of the time, the lyrics were often Satanic, and the cover showed a demon emerging from a pentagram.

The Force, In Search of Sanity and breakup (1985–1991)

Jase Stallard (who had joined Onslaught in 1984) retained his place in the band, but took over bass duties from a hired bassist, who in turn assumed the role of rhythm guitarist, giving the band a second guitarist. [9] By the first months of 1986, the new line-up was ready to record their second album, The Force , [6] in a recording studio in London. The album was released in May of that year through the label Under One Flag, [9] and Onslaught toured for about two-and-a-half years in support of it, playing with bands such as Motörhead, Exciter, Girlschool, Kreator, Nuclear Assault, Agent Steel, the Crumbsuckers, Angel Dust, Exumer, Messiah, Sabbat and a then-still unknown Anthrax. [10] The album was much more successful than Power from Hell, and is considered a classic by many critics and fanzines.[ which? ] Chris Dahlkvist left the band later in 1986 and was replaced by James Hinder. [9]

In 1987, Jase Stallard's guitar playing came into question, so Rockett dismissed him and replaced him with Rob Trotman. [9] Using this line-up, they set out to write material for a third studio album. Having drawn the attention of London Records, the label signed the band. [9] In mid-1988, the band began to start recording their third album, In Search of Sanity . [6] Upon hearing the album, the record label felt that a more versatile vocalist was needed, to do the music more justice. Although the band felt that Sy Keeler's vocals on the demo recording had the right sound, the production had a more polished sound – hence the need for a more polished vocalist. Steve Grimmett, formerly of the NWOBHM band Grim Reaper, was drafted in to replace the departing Sy Keeler. [11] Owing to this development, the release of the album was delayed until mid-1989. Following the success of The Force, and with an accomplished new singer, there was much pre-release publicity. In Search of Sanity had a much different sound than Onslaught's previous releases; while it is technically a thrash metal album, it saw them shift towards a progressive/power metal sound, [12] [13] and included the band's longest track to date "Welcome to Dying". Many hardcore thrash metal fans were disappointed with these changes, and this partially contributed to the band's demise.[ citation needed ] Despite the mixed critical reaction, [6] In Search of Sanity is Onslaught's only album to enter the UK Albums Chart, peaking at No. 30, [14] while the cover version of AC/DC's "Let There Be Rock" was the band's only single to appear in the UK Singles chart, peaking at No. 50. [15] Onslaught toured for over a year in support of In Search of Sanity, playing alongside Annihilator, Xentrix, Slammer, the Crumbsuckers, Horse (not to be confused with the metalcore band from California), Drunken State, Sabbat and Dead On. [10]

In early 1990, Steve Grimmett decided to leave the band due to internal reasons, and was replaced by Tony O'Hora. [9] The band then set out to write and then record a fourth album. London Records decided not to renew their contract with Onslaught, leaving the band without a record deal. [9] Roadrunner offered them £50,000 but Rockett declined to sign for an indie label, and they decided to disband in early 1991. [9] Tony O'Hora later sung for Praying Mantis and later became the lead singer of the Sweet.[ citation needed ]

Reunion and more albums (2005–2018)

In 2005, the band were reformed [16] by Steve Grice and was joined by Sy Keeler, Nige Rockett, and James Hinder. They were joined by the Welsh guitarist, Alan Jordan. Writing for the band's fourth album, Killing Peace , began in 2005, and the album was released in early 2007. Bassist James Hinder left the band in 2006, before the release of Killing Peace, and was replaced by Jeff Williams. This line-up recorded a live DVD in Club Stodola, Warsaw, Poland, which was released in 2007 by Metal Mind Productions under the title Live Polish Assault.[ citation needed ]

In 2008, Jordan was forced out of the band and was replaced by guitarist Andy Rosser-Davies. In November of that year, the band recorded their live performance at the Damnation Festival in Leeds resulting in a live album (Dual Disc CD / DVD), Live Damnation; mixed by a local Bristol producer, it was released in August 2009 by Candlelight Records. [17] In June 2010, the band signed to the German metal label AFM Records to record their fifth studio album, Sounds of Violence , released in January 2011. [18] On 25 March 2011, Steve Grice decided to leave the band on the eve of a major European tour due to a massive differance in the way reality was viewed. Michael Hourihan (Extreme Noise Terror, Desecration) replaced him for the tour and in November 2011 became a full member of the band. Onslaught recorded their sixth studio album, VI , from April to May and released it on 20 September 2013.[ citation needed ]

Former Anthrax singer Neil Turbin joined the band for their Thrash Invasion tour of US and Canada, Brazil and Chile, North and South America in 2014 as Sy Keeler was unable to take part due to family problems. [19] He left the tour for the last week of shows after performing at The Music Hall, Anaheim, California, on 24 November 2014, only two days before the tour ended.[ citation needed ]

The band played the 10th edition of Hellfest in June 2015.[ citation needed ]

On 14 September 2015, Onslaught announced that they had recruited Iain GT Davies as a full-time replacement for Andy Rosser Davies. However, the band stated that Andy Rosser Davies was going to contribute to the songwriting of their next album. [20]

On 27 March 2018, guitarist Iain GT Davies and drummer Mic Hourihan parted ways with Onslaught, to focus on other bands and projects amongst other reasons. Rockett said that their replacements had already been chosen, but had not yet been revealed. He then said that the band would perform a new song from their then-upcoming seventh album at Bloodstock Open Air. [21] On 16 July 2018, it was announced that guitarist Wayne Dorman and Drummer James Perry had joined the band.

Generation Antichrist, split with Sy Keeler and next album (2018–present)

On 18 November 2018, Onslaught posted a teaser video on Facebook, confirming that they were recording their seventh studio album at Grindstone Studios. [22] The band released the video for their first song in six years "A Perfect Day to Die" in March 2019, which is "a nod to [their] sadly departed friends from Motörhead who were a major influence for Onslaught over the years." [23]

On 29 April 2020, Onslaught announced that vocalist Sy Keeler had once again parted ways with the band, citing his reason as, "Due to the nature of the modern-day music industry, some things simply aren't sustainable year after year and Sy has now taken a different full-time career path." [24] A few days later, it was announced that Keeler was replaced by Dave Garnett, who had previously performed in Onslaught by filling in for him the House of Metal festival in Umeå, Sweden that past February. [25]

On 12 May 2020, Onslaught announced that their seventh studio album, titled Generation Antichrist , would be released on 7 August. [26]

In March 2021, about seven months after the release of Generation Antichrist, Rockett announced that Onslaught had begun working on their eighth studio album, which was in pre-production and planned for release in 2022. [27] Guitarist Wayne Dorman confirmed in a post on Facebook in December 2021 that he had begun writing new material for the band's new album. [28] In October 2023, Onslaught announced they were tracking their new album at Tellus Studios in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. [29]

Back on Black Records will release Skullcrusher, a compilation album containing tracks from Onslaught's first four studio albums as well as two early demo tracks, on 10 May 2024. [30]

The band's current lineup includes Verni, Ellsworth, Dave Linsk on lead guitar, Derek Tailer on rhythm guitar and Jason Bittner on drums. Along with Nuclear Assault and Anthrax, the latter of whom would feature one-time Overkill lead guitarist Dan Spitz, the band is one of the most successful East Coast thrash metal bands, and they are often called "the Motörhead of thrash metal", based on their unique playing style, which was influenced by punk rock and the new wave of British heavy metal (NWOBHM). Kreator is a German thrash metal band from Essen, formed in 1982. Their current lineup consists of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Miland "Mille" Petrozza, drummer Jürgen "Ventor" Reil, lead guitarist Sami Yli-Sirniö, and bassist Frédéric Leclercq. The band's lineup has changed multiple times over its 42-year career, most noticeably with their bassists and lead guitarists. Petrozza and Reil are the only two original members left in Kreator, although the latter took a break from the band from 1994 to 1996. Yli-Sirniö has been the lead guitarist of Kreator since 2001, while Leclercq joined in 2019 as the replacement of Christian "Speesy" Giesler, who had been a member of the band since 1994.

Testament is an American thrash metal band from Berkeley, California. Formed in 1983 under the name Legacy, the band's current lineup comprises rhythm guitarist Eric Peterson, lead vocalist Chuck Billy, lead guitarist Alex Skolnick, bassist Steve Di Giorgio and drummer Chris Dovas. Testament has experienced many lineup changes over the years, with Peterson being the only remaining original member, though they have since reunited with Skolnick, who had been out of the band from 1992 to 2005. Billy has been a member of Testament since 1986, when he replaced original singer Steve "Zetro" Souza, who had left to replace the late Paul Baloff in Exodus. Along with Kreator, Destruction and Tankard, Sodom has been referred to as one of the "Big Four" of Teutonic thrash metal. Sodom heavily influenced the German black metal scene. In addition, the band is regarded as a pioneer of early death metal. Mike McPadden wrote that the most Venom-blackened of German "Three Kings", Sodom further merged thrash and death metal into a "wicked and decadent sound".

Annihilator is a Canadian thrash metal band founded in Ottawa in 1984 by Jeff Waters. Waters is the band's sole constant member and has acted as its guitarist, bandleader, writer, producer, engineer, and occasional bassist and vocalist. Annihilator has released 17 studio albums and has undergone many line-up changes, with Waters regularly assembling touring or session musicians to perform with him. Along with Sacrifice, Voivod and Razor, Annihilator is known as one of the "Big Four" of Canadian thrash metal. They are also considered to be part of the "second wave" of thrash metal bands from the late 1980s and early 1990s.

In addition to helping pioneer black metal, Destruction was part of the second wave of thrash metal in the mid-to-late 1980s, along with American bands Testament, Sacred Reich, Death Angel and Dark Angel. For most of the 1990s, the band was not signed to a record label and was forced to self-produce their albums until they signed a contract with Nuclear Blast in the early 2000s.

Sounds of Violence is the fifth studio album by English thrash metal band Onslaught, released on 28 January 2011 through AFM Records in Europe and 8 February in North America. This was Onslaught's first album not to feature a new singer, as Sy Keeler remained with the band after their previous album Killing Peace. In addition to standard CD formats, Sounds of Violence was also released on limited black vinyl in a gatefold sleeve and a Limited Digipack. For the Japanese release the album also featured a re-recording of "Angels of Death" and "Thermonuclear Devastation" taken from their debut album Power from Hell. Sounds of Violence outsold the previous album Killing Peace in less than one year. In February 2012, the band has been listed by the webzine Metal Storm as the sixth best Thrash Metal Album of 2011.

Generation Antichrist is the seventh studio album by British thrash metal band Onslaught, released on 7 August 2020. It is their first studio album since 2013's VI, and the first not to feature Sy Keeler on vocals since 1989's In Search of Sanity. As such, Generation Antichrist is the band's first album to feature Keeler's replacement Dave Garnett, as well as two new members, James Perry (drums) and Wayne Dorman (guitar).

<i>Bury the Pain</i> 2019 studio album by Xentrix

Bury the Pain is the fifth studio album by British thrash metal band Xentrix, released on 7 June 2019 in Europe and 21 June 2019 in North America, 25 years after their previous album Scourge. A music video was produced for the albums title track, "Bury the Pain". It marks the first album with new guitarist/vocalist Jay Walsh, replacing their previous member Chris Astley. In a post on the band's official Facebook page, they stated that by the end of 2015, Astley had no longer wanted to be a part of Xentrix and had left the band. To promote their return, they released a single for the track "Bleeding Out" on streaming services.

<i>Seven Words</i> (album) 2022 studio album by Xentrix

Seven Words is the sixth studio album by British thrash metal band Xentrix, and released 11 November 2022 through Listenable Records. To promote the upcoming release the band produced music videos for both the title track, "Seven Words", and "Reckless with a Smile".
