A lighthouse is a tower,building,or other type of physical structure designed to emit light from a system of lamps and lenses and to serve as a beacon for navigational aid,for maritime pilots at sea or on inland waterways.
The Gasparilla Island Lights are on Gasparilla Island in Boca Grande,Florida. The Port Boca Grande Lighthouse is on the southern tip of Gasparilla Island,and marked the Boca Grande Pass entrance to Charlotte Harbor.
The Old Presque Isle Light was the first lighthouse in the Presque Isle,Michigan area,built in 1840,supported physically by two-thirds stone and one-third brick,and supported financially by funds appropriated by Congress two years earlier of $5,000. The tower and dwelling did not last long in the harsh weather,however,and by 1867 they were deteriorated enough for Congress to find need for a newer station. It presently is not operational and is a museum.
The St. Augustine Light Station is a privately maintained aid to navigation and an active,working lighthouse in St. Augustine,Florida. The current lighthouse stands at the north end of Anastasia Island and was built between 1871 and 1874. The tower is the second lighthouse tower in St. Augustine,the first being lit officially by the American territorial government in May 1824 as Florida's first lighthouse. However,both the Spanish and the British governments operated a major aid to navigation here including a series of wooden watch towers and beacons dating from 1565.
Reedy Island Range Rear Lighthouse is a skeletal tower lighthouse near Taylor's Bridge,Delaware. The tower is an active aid to navigation.
Grotto Point Light,also known as Port Jackson Entrance Range Front Light,is an active lighthouse located at Grotto Point,a rocky headland at the southernmost tip of Balgowlah Heights,New South Wales,Australia,on the north side of Sydney Harbour. It serves as the front range light,Rosherville Light serving as the rear light,into Port Jackson. Rosherville Light is located almost exactly 1 mile (1.6 km) behind Grotto Point Light.
Old Hunstanton Lighthouse is a former lighthouse located in Old Hunstanton in the English county of Norfolk,generally called Hunstanton Lighthouse during its operational life. It was built at the highest point available on this part of the coast,on top of Hunstanton Cliffs,and served to help guide vessels into the safe water of Lynn Deeps. Although the present lighthouse was built in 1840,there had been a lighthouse on the site since the 17th century. Prior to the establishment of the Lynn Well light vessel in 1828,Hunstanton Lighthouse provided the only visible guide to ships seeking to enter The Wash at night.
The Haig Point Range Lights were range lights on Calibogue Sound at the northeastern end of Daufuskie Island in Beaufort County,South Carolina. The Haig Point Range Lights were built in 1873 and were maintained as an official aid to navigation until about 1924. The Rear Range Light house has been restored. It is a guest house for the Haig Point Club and serves as a private aid to navigation.
The Bloody Point Range Lights,which is known as the Bloody Point Lighthouse,were range lights on the southern end of Daufuskie Island in Beaufort County,South Carolina. The Bloody Point Range Lights were built in 1883. Due to erosion,the front light was moved to the location of the former rear light and became the rear light. The lights were maintained as an official aid to navigation until 1922. The original Front Range Light house is currently a private home.
Marshall Point Light Station is a lighthouse at the entrance of Port Clyde Harbor in Port Clyde,Maine. The light station was established in 1832.
Ship Island Light was a lighthouse in Mississippi near Gulfport.
The Wood Islands Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse built by Joseph Tomlinson III situated on the southeastern shore of Prince Edward Island,located in the community of Wood Islands. The lighthouse is a well-preserved three storey tower with an adjoining 1+1⁄2-storey keeper's residence. The white shingled tower is topped by a red iron lantern,which is enclosed by a white railing on the observation deck. The red roof of the dwelling provides a striking contrast to the white shingled exterior of the dwelling.
The Grand Island Harbor Rear Range Light is a lighthouse located off M-28 in Munising Township,Michigan. It is also known as the Bay Furnace Rear Range Light,Christmas Rear Range Light,or End of the Road Light. The corresponding front range light was replaced in 1968;the rear range light was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. It is no longer an active aid to navigation.
Point Perpendicular Light is a lighthouse located on Point Perpendicular,a point at the southern tip of the Beecroft Peninsula,in New South Wales,Australia. It marks and the northern entrance to Jervis Bay. The historic lighthouse was active from 1889 to 1993 and is still present,though its future is unclear. It is believed to be the first lighthouse in New South Wales which was built of precast concrete blocks. The light was replaced in 1993 with a skeletal tower which is active.
The Port Washington Light is a historical lighthouse in Port Washington,Wisconsin. Replaced by the Port Washington Breakwater Light and converted to a normal dwelling,it was restored with the assistance of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and currently serves as a museum.
Cape Moreton Light,also listed as North Point Range Rear Light,is a heritage-listed active lighthouse located on Cape Moreton,a rocky headland located at the north eastern tip of Moreton Island,a large sand island on the eastern side of Moreton Bay,on the coast of South East Queensland,Australia. It marks the northern entrance to Moreton Bay and Brisbane and also serves as the rear light for the North Point Range. With its two distinctive red bands,it also serves as a daymark. It is the oldest lighthouse in Queensland,and the only one to be built by the New South Wales Government before the separation of Queensland,which took place in 1859. It is also the only lighthouse in Queensland to be built of stone.
Lowestoft Lighthouse is a lighthouse operated by Trinity House located to the north of the centre of Lowestoft in the English county of Suffolk. It stands on the North Sea coast close to Ness Point,the most easterly point in the United Kingdom. It acts as a warning light for shipping passing along the east coast and is the most easterly lighthouse in the UK.
The South Pass Light,also known as the Port Eads LighthouseSouth Point Light,or Gordon's Island Light,are a pair of lighthouses located on Gordon's Island at South Pass,in Plaquemines Parish,Louisiana (USA),one of the primary entrances to the Mississippi River Delta from the Gulf of Mexico. The light station was established in 1831 and is still active.
Balache Point Lighthouse also known as Balache Point Range Rear Lighthouse is an active Canadian lighthouse located next to the Canso Canal,near Port Hastings,Inverness County,Nova Scotia. The salt shaker style light,which sits on a small hillock on the Cape Breton side of the canal,is the second lighthouse to be built on the site.
The Gannet Rock Lighthouse is a Canadian lighthouse located on a rocky islet 8 miles (13 km) south of Grand Manan in the Bay of Fundy. It was first lit in 1831 and was staffed until 1996. It was solarized in 2002 and remains operational in 2022. It was declared "surplus to requirements" by the Canadian Coast Guard in 2010 and is no longer being maintained.
