Name change

Chakki Bank railway station was renamed Pathankot Cantonment railway station in 2013. [1]

The railway station

Pathankot Cantonment railway station is at an elevation of 328 metres (1,076 ft) and was assigned the code – PTKC.

History

The 107 km (66 mi)-long 5 ft 6 in (1,676 mm) broad gauge Amritsar–Pathankot line was opened in 1884. [2]

The 164 km (101.9 mi)-long 762 mm (2 ft 6 in)-wide narrow-gauge Kangra Valley Railway from Pathankot to Joginder Nagar was commissioned in 1929. [3]

The line from Jalandhar City to Mukerian was constructed in 1915. [4] The Mukerian–Pathankot line was built in 1952. [5] The construction of the Pathankot–Jammu Tawi line was initiated in 1965, after the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, and opened in 1971. [6]

Electrification

Electrification work of the Jalandhar–Jammu line is completed in 2015.

Loco shed

Pathankot Cantonment had a steam loco shed which has now been decommissioned. [7]

The Kangra Valley Railway is a 2 ft 6 in gauge railway that runs from Pathankot, Punjab to Jogindernagar in Himachal Pradesh. It runs through the sub-Himalayan region of Kangra Valley and is 164 km (101.9 mi) long. The railway is part of the Firozpur division of Northern Railway. It is the longest Narrow Gauge line in India and also the longest 2 ft 6 in Gauge Railway in the World. The highest point on this line is Ahju station at an elevation of 1,290 meters (4,230 ft). There are 33 stops.

The Jalandhar–Jammu line is a railway line connecting Jalandhar Cantonment and Jalandhar City in the Indian state of Punjab with Jammu Tawi in Jammu and Kashmir. The line is under the administrative jurisdiction of Northern Railway. This line was made after Indian Independence in 1947. Normally before partition of India and creation of Pakistan, trains to Jammu Tawi from Delhi used to run via Panipat, Ambala Cantonment, Ludhiana, Jalandhar City, Amritsar, Lahore, Narowal and Sialkot. But after partition and creation of Pakistan in 1947, the Sialkot–Jammu Tawi line was dismantled and closed permanently. Jammu and Kashmir became cut off from rest of India. Hence in 1949, it was decided to extend the line from Jalandhar City to Mukerian till Pathankot and after the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, this line was extended to Jammu Tawi. This 216 km (134 mi) railway line is an important strategic connectivity for Indian Military and Defence.
